The Line Between Safety and Freedom | Chris Olson | EP 460

Dr. Jordan Peterson sits down with cybercrime expert and CEO of The Media Trust, Chris Olson. They discuss the key targets for cybercrime, dating and other online scams, what legislative measures for internet safety might look like, and the necessary sacrifice major companies need to make for a better digital ecosystem.
Chris Olson is the CEO of The Media Trust, a company founded with the goal of transforming the internet experience by helping technology and digital media companies create a safer internet for people. Under his leadership, the company invented the world's first digital data compliance, Children's Online Privacy (COPPA) and website/mobile-app malware scanning technologies. Through infrastructure in 120 countries, The Media Trust protects billions of people every month from digital attacks. Fortune 10 to hundreds of small and medium-sized tech and digital media companies leverage The Media Trust to protect their customers from digital harm and unwanted data collection.

We need to narrow the definition of cyber crime. In Australia today this includes exchanging info that the current government does not. Like . So it is best to name the crime and in this way allow for clear cut accountability. If I believe an online ad claiming that drinking rosemary tea helps against covid it’s my business, not of police. That’s very different from someone stealing an ID

I do seem to have turned into that very irritating person who goes around shaking her head sagely and gravely intoning, “Upon my soul, it’s all there in Lewis. _That Hideous Strength_ and _The Abolition of Man_ . Lewis called it seventy-odd years ago.” And I do believe that if academia had embraced Lewis and Tolkien and Macdonald and Chesterton, rather than the postmodernists, we would not be in the pretty kettle of fish in which we find ourselves at present. Spencer Klavan made an excellent argument that Lewis was the great 20th century intellectual, and I’ve been thinking about that.

An interesting suggestion: impersonating the scammers. Olson mentions impersonating victims, elderly grandmas etc., in order to entrap predators. What if we did the opposite, impersonating scammers - and when susceptible people fall victim to the scam, you educate them on the mistake they made so they can learn and have a second chance

Many times a scam is going to entice people based on their own greed or vice. Perhaps if people were more interested in the pursuit of virtue they could avoid a large percentage of scams. I once saw a guy that gave out his bank account information to a guy that claimed to be a Nigerian prince who was promising a fortune in return… 🤔 Maybe encourage them to invest more in studying the Bible. They would have learned the love of money was the root of all kinds of evil.

This was an eye opening conversation into how widespread the problem is. And it easy to hypothesize on how bad things could get in no time. A good antidote to this problem might be creating a secure environment for individuals prone to predation, to foster the critical awareness needed to see these dangers. Foster this awareness by gamifying the opportunity of distinguishing between the safe and the dangers. You could do this in a game-like virtual place. A Good, fun, simple videogame could teach people all the online skills needed to be safe.

30:05 What he’s suggesting seems very dangerous to me. It sounds like he is suggesting we seize and institute a capture and tracking mechanisms into any structure or system that a criminal could conceivably use. By Law. By Courts. By Police. The issue of course is that we use those Systems. By all means, if a Company or Organization wants to set up a System that way and discloses it. Fine. It’s Search and Seizure, and there are good reasons not to structure a Service or Architecture to actively store and keep those records. If you don’t keep Sensitive Data, it cannot be taken. Ever. Even as Tech advances. Obfuscation serves as the number one form of Safety from all manner of targeting. If I’m transporting a locked case in my trunk, and I do not know it’s contents, that is a fantastic way to never know them. If my delivery destination is transmitted more and more accurately as I travel, then erases itself from the receiving device, that is great defense. And it’s legally protected as a means of self defense. Great op sec. If you compromise that Service you are doing 6 things not legally allowed, and compromising the Market and Service of Security offered per say. The means of doing this as proposed is everything. That’s why, even if a Company Advertised that it kept immaculate Records, and looked through everything to make sure you are getting taken advantage. And of course submitting anything at all sketchy or suspicious to the Police is a not a great pitch. Either for children or elderly. Because every single one of those things is an attack vector.

Stripping away privacy to better identify scammers would last all of 10 minutes before the scammers adapt, while citizens are left with the consequences of widespread surveillance.

Except I tease you a little bit but you will see it’s the spirit of play. And I did say that you are an absolute sweetheart in person, because you are, and that might ruin your reputation as a curmudgeon, but that’s the way it is. And if you do like it, if you could please share it, it might help expose my work to paying editors who might like to have me write for them and that would be helpful. But only if you find merit in my work. With Ruth Anne’s love

Jordan, this topic is so crucial, and the theme of victimhood spreads so deep! I was visiting a local police station in S.A.: In the cue infront was this African grandma.. Shame, she was a victim of cyber theft. Now, couple the real victimhood experienced from the internet with the victimhood narrative systemic from S.A.'s political past, the cyber reality aggrivates people like this grandma, preventing her from overcoming this whirlpool of victimhood. Thank you for making more people aware. Do you think that, in the future, the public can hold company leaders that has a monopoly on these "cloud space" information-generators more seriously for such crimes? Can they be held accountable? Should they be held accountable?

Haven’t watched the whole thing yet so not sure if it is mentioned, but the newest pain in our ass is that scammers are recording our voices from social media videos we post then use AI to call grandparents and ask for money. It can be anyone really but they target the elderly. We’ve come up with stupid code words that we’ll use to know that it is really us speaking haha. Knowing how your family members speak is a good way to know if it’s fake or not. We usually know certain words and phrases we like to use.

19:02 How is this not described as digital stalking? Deliberate deception, concealed monitoring and targeted directly to the individual. Depending on what videos are provided to the algorithm, it could cause untold damage to the mental health of the target.

Great talk but you lost me with the parasite thing. Sexual reproduction does not necessarily prevent transmission of disease to offspring as an evolutionary mechanism. Diseases can easily pass from father to mother then to baby from sexual or non-sexual contact. If he meant actual parasites like toxoplasmosis (round worm), they can be transmitted during pregnancy or during sex or in any kind of human to human bodily fluids.

They just have to make it so that people can’t just call my number or email me that easily. We have to resort to white listing. Otherwise snail mail me. That costs too much money for most scammers. But not white listing by me. I just want to choose my bank, or whatever, and the technical stuff is handled by the companies. I don’t want to have to deal with a list of phone numbers or email addresses. They can come up with some sort of ID mechanism that is between source and email provider or cellular phone provider.

A grandmother received that letter that she owed $500. And told to call a number and she was kept on the phone as she went to the bank with instructions from the caller and don’t quite know how she lost $17,000 from her bank savings account even when the bank asked her if this is a scan and she continued listening to the caller .

@ 12:23 "People believe what they see on computers." Just as before digital technology, people believed what they saw on TV, and heard on the radio. And before that, what they saw in print. It's interesting to consider this, which has been with us ever since technologies to store and share information were developed and became widely used. Almost as if there is some magic in the printed word, and in the broadcast word, whether audio, visual, or digital. It would certainly seem like magic to an illiterate. As we like to joke about in social media: "It's on the Internet, so it must be true!"
