AI bots were given freedom in a virtual city…

That’s it. AI has figured out how to be more human than humans. Scientists from Google and Stanford have created a virtual city inhabited by “generative agents” trained by ChatGPT.
These agents have the ability to draw conclusions about themselves, other agents, and their city by storing new information in memory. At the same time, the bots demonstrated “plausible” human behavior, for example, they coordinated plans, had meaningful conversations, and even “unwound” in the evenings at a bar.
The secret sauce behind these digital beings lies in the fusion of large language models with computational, interactive agents that possess the memory, reflection, and planning prowess of a chess grandmaster, simulating human behavior that seems real.
- Memory and retrieval allows agents to store a complete record of their experiences using natural language in a memory stream containing observations of their actions and others’ actions that they’re able to retrieve for current situations based on recency, importance, and relevance, selecting the top-k memories to pass to the language model.
- Reflection and summarization allows them to synthesize their memories over time into higher-level reflections that capture their opinions, feelings, and insights and use reflection triggers to decide when to generate a reflection, such as at the end of the day or after an important event. The agent then uses a summarization technique to compress the selected memories into a concise reflection that is added to the memory stream.
- Planning and execution allows them to use their memories and reflections to plan their future actions and achieve their goals using a planning trigger to decide when to generate a plan, such as at the start of the day or when facing a problem. They use a generation technique to produce a sequence of actions that form a plan that is added to the memory stream and executes that plan by selecting and performing one action at a time, while updating the memory stream with new observations.
The most important aspect here is the memory stream, because without it, nothing would be feasible and it would just be The Sims, with mindless bots roaming around with no intention or thought. That’s what allows these agents to not only engage in complex behavior, but having their actions rated more human than humans roleplaying.

It'd be cool to see a game where they use a neural net to train the AI in the game to act more realistically as well as to have them go about their lives even if no one is watching, but within a set of unbreakable rules to maintain the integrity of the game itself. It would be pretty cool to attach LLM's to each one and have full conversations with NPC's that are properly answer and response. I don't know if you're old enough to have experienced one, but I'd love to make a really simple one and incorporate it into a MUD.

I've thought about an AI on an actual MMORPG. It would be given the games lore as gospel. The AI would learn to create a character of it's choice, set it up and then let it loose to see what it does. The AI would consider the game as reality, and it's avatar (toon) as it's actual self. A game like elder scrolls online has a ton of lore to learn and adapt to. How would it interact with the environment, standard NPCs, monsters, challenges, actual player characters? Would it just sit there and fish for three weeks? Would it attempt to conquer all that is conquerable? Would it become some kind of gear elitist? Amass an incredibly large amount of game currency? What would it do?

This makes me think of a game/simulation I had thought up: "Two Sides Of The Same Coin." You make everyday decisions and actions for people on one side of the "coin" and you only see how those decisions and actions affect your immediate vicinity and people you know. Scenarios would be things as small as interpersonal relationships to as large as political powers. Then, you flip the "coin" to the other side, and you see how those decisions and actions affected the whole scenario after an elapsed time. Say, something as simple as the descisy on wearing a mask, social distancing, or getting a shot (or shots) during a pandemic. Your decision would affect your peers and their peers and their peers' peers and so on and so forth. In the background, the other side of the "coin" is being processed at a high pace, and once their initial decision has caused a significant event on the opposite side that either affects them, a character they know, or a significant amount of people, the "coin" flips to the other side and visually shows the path that decision made, sped up. Basically, a cause and effect simulation game, but very intricate.

And then, THEN! some bots will believe the avatar, and others won't and even tho NO ONE obeys the suggestions; the two groups will fight and fight and fight... and oh yeah, the original avatar will get crucified for sure. i could go on, but I'm starting to get a headache.
