A couple quick notes. I hope you're learning a lot from these conversations. I sure am. It's such a blast talking with these devs each week. After 100+ episodes my interview style is evolving, and I wanted to address some of the feedback people have had about it. I'm talking a lot more, and even jumping in a lot more to keep things fast and fun. Also, I'm not editing AT ALL. This is a the full conversation. In short, I'm trying to make this more REAL because I think reality is more useful than a polished conversation where nobody says "um" or interrupts one another. And I'm being my true self rather than trying to cosplay as a pure journalist. I hope that as a result, these conversations are more flavorful, and that I'm able to tease out lots of insights from devs that other interviewers aren't. As always, I'd welcome your feedback. Who else should I interview? What topics are you all interested in? You don't have to comment right here but you can comment on any of these weekly podcast videos and let me know. I read everything. 🏕

Hi Quincy, I have noticed that Matlab is mentioned in this podcast. I have been through your database on KZread, and there isn't a course on this. I am wondering if you could please be able to put a beginners course of Matlab on please

@@brianjohnson9780 we may publish Matlab courses in the future. It's an expensive proprietary language that a lot of people don't have access to, but it is used at a lot of universities.

The stupid thing is that schools expect you to do learning outside of class, so they fully understand that you can learn everything outside the classroom, yet they still charge for some stupid degree, and jobs won't accept you unless you have it. 95% of what's learned and what's useful in a CS degrees is learned outside of the classroom for free.

He’s a good programmer. You can tell by his speech. Whenever he talks he covers several possibilities of what he’s saying . To be as precise and unambiguous as possible.. so his code and everything he does must be like that.. very great mind. Such a young cat with this mental capacities . That’s dope

Is it me or do you notice when people are talking these days there’s a lot of “umms” No seriously when did this become a thing? Am I the only one that doesn’t do it anymore? I’ve never done it. I thought these men were supposed to be smart so why is he saying “umm” every 10 seconds

  • @quincylarsonmusic

It's because we're stopping to think about what we're saying. We're having a real-time conversation, and not just regurgitating partially memorized talking points. Yes - we could completely stop talking for a second, but that can be awkward, too. "Um" communicates to the other person: "one second I'm thinking" - essentially holding priority to finish a thought before the conversation moves forward.
