Ahsoka Episode 3 Review - Is It Short Filler!?

Ойын-сауық

Star Wars' latest series, Ashoka returns with the third episode. This finds Ahsoka and her newly appointed/returning apprentice, Sabine Wren on the hunt to stop Morgan and Baylon Skroll from finding the legendary Admiral Thrawn. The episode in a lot of way feels like Kenobi, the Boba Fett series or even Mandalorian with its use of time. While we enjoy the series thus far, this episode IS a bit of a step back. However, we remain optimistic about Ahsoka in the Star Wars Universe and remain hopeful for the future of the episode!

We use the go to description word for Star Wars televisions shows, 'FILLER'! The episode definitely is that, but I don't think it is a bad thing. Ahsoka remains visually engaging, with wonderful production design and performances. While our review comes off harsh, make no mistake, we enjoy this show! Thanks as usual for supporting. It means the world. If you'd like to support me more, which goes a long way, please check out my Patreon at Patreon.com/natertot Thanks and I'll see you on the next one! - Mr. Tot

I have a different take. I liked it because the whole episode felt frustrating for the characters. This was something we didn’t experience in the sequel trilogy. Sabine: sucks with the force. Ahsoka: keeps people away. Hera: is unpersuasive to government. Mon mothma: unwilling to push those around her to the right decision. To me, this is a step toward the bigger picture this story is setting up. Not perfect, but I like the set up for future payoffs

Did we watch the same episode? Watched it twice. Love it. Guessing you're a Warsie. Nobody hates Star Wars than a Warsies.

I liked most everything in this episode, but it still does speak to the very consistent problem with D+ Star Wars, the episodes are just always too short. The almost feel like filler because they aren't long enough to really get anything going. Probably best as a binge watch because the short episodes week by week are just a little underwhelming. And I don't think Balin is actually the bad guy. He will likely return to the light side before all is said and done. He still has too much compassion for the Jedi to truly be the villain

Completely agreed with everything you said. I think underwhelming is the state, despite me genuinely enjoying what's going on. I think as one long go, it would pay off better. I think you're right. Something about the way he looks, like a disturbed/doubtful look. It would be cool to see him return to the light side.

only thing i liked about it is the training scenes, huyang, ahsoka and cup scene. the dog fight and space walk was forced and dull. they have a lot to live up to in terms of story telling, dialog and directing of andor.

Netflix and shows like Games of Thrones. Have normalized 8-10 episode seasons of quote on quote “television”. I’ve been forced to agree with Red Letter Media. On one of their REview episodes. When they felt like Star Trek Discovery feels like an elongated movie. Instead of a standard season of TV. From not even more than twenty years ago. When TV shows like That 70s show. Still had twenty+ episodes in one season. Otherwise the episode was fun but kinda forgettable.

Definitely an elongated movie. I think that's where the binge model works. Otherwise, this feels like an attempt to keep subscribers on the platform. I get it, but it still left me feeling a bit empty.

It's same problem the Bad Batch cartoon suffered from. Filoni dragging out scenes and not learning how to do proper pacing. It does not surprise me it happened in Filoni's Ahsoka show too. Filoni's isn't that great of a director.

Filoni is a perfect send off from George Lucas. He's a grand scale ideas guy. Filoni has made Star Wars for the better, but Lucas definitely needed the right people around him. He lacks direction, pacing and scene set up. The episode was short and could've honestly been a few minutes shorter. It's a shame. I remain optimistic about the rest, but we will see

Filoni starts to getting me mad Yes he does good episodes here and there but also boring or cringe one as the one with Black Jack Imagine 8 episodes series and you do a filler one, WTF??? The more I look at Andor, the more I realize Filoni aint the choosen one as once claimed

Defense is the budget bottleneck. Can't be much more that $100 million a season. Its still longer than a movie. Might be longer than to two 120 minute movies.

Yep. I believe at one time Mandalorian was costing 10 million per episode. That's quite expensive. The five hours could be better written to be a two hour movie that could cost 80 million, if done correctly. Obviously/clearly this is done (at least in my opinion) to win over Disney+ subscribers.

34 minutes to almost an hr is a huge swing of time. Really does make this feel like a long movie chopped up. Too bad.

Kenobi was similar. I was really depressed when I saw the length. You definitely feel it. Nothing feels accomplished and then you have to wait a week. Which is fine, I'm totally okay with the ol' days of television but an episode like this provides such little to the story and characters.

People need to stop calling every slower episode filler. It literally shows Sabine getting trained and establishes that the new republic isn’t going to help.

  • @NaterTot

    @NaterTot

While I'll agree 'filler' is an overused term within the Star Wars universe, lets not mix things here. Sabine should have already had training. She did so in Rebels and was trained prior to the show. The entire scene with the New Republic not wanting to help not only didn't make sense (why wouldn't you want to investigate anything, because you're worried you 'might' find Ezra?) but was dragged on far too long. Those two scenes alone occupied 15 minutes of screentime. We have ZERO issue with slow episodes. The best of Star Wars is characterization and development of characters. Not just lightsaber battles and explosions (which I'm assuming that was the thought taken from this). The same goes with Star Wars. However, nothing was advanced here, other than Sabine cannot defend herself (She's a Mandalorian, she should be able to), the Republic doesn't want to help (despite having evidence it should) and the planet was found. Regardless, I appreciate your thoughts. We are always open to discussion. Criticism is just a perspective and our thoughts/critiques are NOT meant as cement.

@@NaterTot I will concede on those points. I actually wrote an article about the overuse of the term filler, specifically how people called the second episode of the very first season filler when it was VITAL to the development of Din and Grogu's relationship.

@@NaterTot I would actually argue they shouldn't have shown the ring at the end of episode 2. That way the reveal itself would have been a lot more impactful. The issue here is not that it's slow, the issue is the viewer doesn't learn anything new. Basically everything has been shown before, be it in episode 1 and 2, or in other movies/series (the new republic being blind to the empires shenanigans was already a big point in Mando)

I was talking to a friend of mine about how D+ is dropping the ball with Ahsoka. First with treating it as network tv with having it on a date/time schedule. Second having a filler in a weekly show that has less than 13 episodes is asinine. And last, the damn runtimes that not even network tv does. This is the real reason why D+ is losing subs, they are trying to turn streaming into network and that is a failing model.
