An agonist in pharmacology is a substance that binds to a specific receptor on a cell and activates it to produce a biological response. Agonists mimic the action of naturally occurring substances (such as hormones or neurotransmitters) by stimulating the receptor to initiate the intended effect. For example, morphine is an agonist at opioid receptors, activating them to relieve pain. Agonists can be full, producing a maximal response, or partial, eliciting a weaker response even when fully bound to the receptor. They play a crucial role in various therapeutic treatments by enhancing or replicating the body's natural physiological processes.
