    DHA, on the other hand is benefical for most all bodily functions. Can get DHA without EPA in some algae-based supplements.

    Confusion about inflammation, immunity and long chain omega-3 fatty Acids. Too much EPA will damp down inflammation, which can be important for some people (eg if they have high C reactive protein), BUT your immune system NEEDS inflammation, so you can get too much EPA.

    Also, zinc absorption is inhibited by a high grain diet. If feeling cold or flu coming on can benefit from easily absorbed zinc lozenges dissolved in the mouth.

    Zinc absorption is lower with a high-phytate diet (found in whole grains and other plants). If you eat a lot of those foods, it would be good to get additional sources of zinc to overcome the effects of phytate - there are also ways of preparing foods to remove more phytate.

    So, a complete multi vitamin after the age of 55 is recommended? Even on a whole food plant based diet?

    It is difficult to get all of your micronutrient needs from plants alone - supplements are recommended for many of the gaps. We simply recommend a multivitamin as an insurance policy, because it is difficult to know what vitamins and minerals you may be lacking.
