Agility Robotics Partners With GXO

Ғылым және технология

Agility Robotics and GXO are teaching Digit to undertake repetitive tasks such as moving totes from autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and placing them onto conveyors. Reduction of such repetition reduces strain, increases safety for team members and frees them to do more value-added work in the warehouse. GXO’s recent survey confirms better engagement and higher job satisfaction among team members when working with technology. If this initial phase proves successful, it will pave the way for piloting Digit in a wider variety of roles in 2024.
At Agility, we make robots that are made for work. Our robot Digit works alongside us in spaces designed for people. Digit handles the tedious and repetitive tasks meant for a machine, allowing companies and their people to focus on the work that requires the human element.

Very cool! But let's be honest, 90% of those people in that warehouse won't be there in a few years as the robots take over (however, this is no problem, because who really wants to work in a warehouse anyway).

Both of you are right. The problem is, we're not in the driver's seat, the corporations are. If it will save them money, they will do it. No different than when every other technological shift, many will be left with their careers obsolete. Look how AI is already ruining many lifelong digital artists careers. I can't say if it's good or bad, it kind of just is. Same way I can't really judge the fact that I don't need a horse shoer in the 21st century as good or bad, it just is. Don't worship change as you will be let down, but don't cling to a past that's on the way out as you may be left in the past alongside it.

Why a humanoid design? A small forklift type robot would be sufficient and just roll back and forth between the conveyor no? Or another conveyor with an actuator that simply pushes the tote off the rack onto the conveyor?

  • @Hillary4SupremeRuler

    @Hillary4SupremeRuler

I'm thinking maybe because the way it can utilize dexterity in fingers and mimic human joint function makes it able to bend down and pick things up in different locations,.and grip a different variety of objects based on feedback in the finger sensors and optical scanning (eyes). Where a forklift can only utilize things that are in predetermined locations and will have to be much more rigid in function.. And the humanoid robot may be more versatile in movement. Like being able to scan a conveyor belt or rack shown in the video, and bend down to the appropriate height and grab the appropriate item,. without touching other items.. Then it can navigate easier too.

The reason is because a forklift can in work on purpose built environments. This thing can work in environments that have not specifically been designed differently for automation. Any crate or conveyor height or basket type is suitable. That's the difference. They can be moved to any line and adjusted to work with it. Not so with non humanoid robots.

  • @MHM4V3R1CK

I meant a forklift style design. Either way something that can shuttle back and forth seems more efficient. While I do agree with the concept that the humanoid can integrate into environments originally intended for humans, it seems less efficient than modifying that environment for a purpose-built robot. It's like using a helicopter when a car can do the job.

A better comparison is having a humanoid robot carry around a handheld welder when a stationary robot arm with built in tooling would be much faster and fewer failure points, just like how they're employed in automotive assembly lines. Just integrate that vision system so it can adapt to moderately varying input and output.

  • @bouipozz

Probably a combination of having the flexibility to reprogram it to do (almost) any human task, plus simply wanting that 'wow factor' to bring investment. Or better yet, the building and/or racking could be mechanised if being built ground up. So it"ll partly be due to the fact that they are designed to work in an environment that was originally designed for humans.

Amazon just bought 797,000 robots I would imagine it take at least 10 years to create something like that not to mention the technology, meaning that these big corporations knew something that the rest of us didn't know, you don't make an impulsive decision to buy 797.000 robots theyve had plenty of time to think about this big decision. Meaning they had a little bit of inside knowledge of what the hell is going to happen to not only the country but the human race. Because when you throw down that kind of cash for robots Their replacing humans.

Next time maybe actually ask a real engineer what the reality is? As someone working in business process automation industry, you only need a very small fraction of engineers to design and build these robots compared to the amount of jobs they replace. This is because if they didnt, nobody would buy these robots. As for maintenance, we dont do that. Throw it in the trash and buy a new one. This is because whenever you are repairing a robot (or even a smartphone) you are repairing it in US soil where the salaries are much higher. When you buy a new smartphone you are outsourcing the labour to China. Throwing it in trash (not even recycling) and buying a new one is the cheapest option.

We are at the start of a new industrial revolution. Unlike the last one, people won't just move to another job, because this time there will not be any jobs. Work from home on a computer job gone. Work unskilled in factory gone. Driving job gone. Building gone. Manufacturing gone. The only human jobs will be jobs like domestic plumber. Or car mechanic breakdown work. Or working in care Work or with animals. Millions will have to be paid to stay home.

_\•/_ I believe we are meant to be like Jesus in our hearts and not in our flesh. But be careful of AI, for it is just our flesh and that is it. It knows only things of the flesh (our fleshly desires) and cannot comprehend things of the spirit such as peace of heart (which comes from obeying God's Word). Whereas we are a spirit and we have a soul but live in the body (in the flesh). When you go to bed it is your flesh that sleeps but your spirit never sleeps (otherwise you have died physically) that is why you have dreams. More so, true love that endures and last is a thing of the heart (when I say 'heart', I mean 'spirit'). But fake love, pretentious love, love with expectations, love for classic reasons, love for material reasons and love for selfish reasons that is a thing of our flesh. In the beginning God said let us make man in our own image, according to our likeness. Take note, God is Spirit and God is Love. As Love He is the source of it. We also know that God is Omnipotent, for He creates out of nothing and He has no beginning and has no end. That means, our love is but a shadow of God's Love. True love looks around to see who is in need of your help, your smile, your possessions, your money, your strength, your quality time. Love forgives and forgets. Love wants for others what it wants for itself. Take note, true love works in conjunction with other spiritual forces such as patience and faith (in the finished work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, rather than in what man has done such as science, technology and organizations which won't last forever). To avoid sin and error which leads to the death of our body and also our spirit in hell fire, we should let the Word of God be the standard of our lives not AI. If not, God will let us face AI on our own and it will cast the truth down to the ground, it will be the cause of so much destruction like never seen before, it will deceive many and take many captive in order to enslave them into worshipping it and abiding in lawlessness. We can only destroy ourselves but with God all things are possible. God knows us better because He is our Creater and He knows our beginning and our end. Our prove text is taken from the book of John 5:31-44, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Daniel 2, Daniel 7-9, Revelation 13-15, Matthew 24-25 and Luke 21. Let us watch and pray... God bless you as you share this message to others.

As already pointed out, this factory will have no workers in a year to two. Honestly, I love the idea of robotics, but this is just another “race to the bottom”. No matter how “cheap” robotics will allow products to be eventually made, if no one is buying your products because they’ve got no money, your business is doomed. At end of the day, the numbers don’t lie - 1% of *very-cheap” is still *too-much*, especially if you have no income.

  • @nightjarflying

Sorry Willa that's nonsense! Were it not for automation you'd probably not be wealthy enough to have the leisure time to learn classical guitar - the guitar itself would cost you a few months wages & there would be no banking loans/credit to enable such purchases. You write "numbers don't lie", but you don't supply any numbers. Your so called "race to the bottom" is how nations grow & modernise - just read any book on western medieval societies & you'll understand that nearly everybody had no spare cash, no education, started work in their early teens & died of stupid things such as tooth infections. It was automation that doomed the ruling lords by enabling economic growth & cash flows. The southern US states & the European 'owned' Caribbean nations used slaves for centuries to make it possible to grow cotton, sugar & tobacco profitably - automation was one of the forces that pushed back against agrarian serfdom & the landowning classes that ruled everything. There were a lot of "Willas" among the very people who ultimately benefitted from the Industrial Revolution. Robotics/automation always increases a nation's economic wealth & if a nation decides to not automate its products will eventually be priced out of the marketplace reducing GDP. Imagine if agriculture was not automated there would be Billions of farmers/labourers doing back-breaking work on cash crops & dying in middle age. Also child labour numbers would go through the roof. The problem you're identifying is that in the short term wages are dropping in real terms for those workers who didn't stay in school/go to college - those effected have less spending power, smaller families [good], but it drives their children to become better educated. Over a single generation education increases for those communities that embrace change, those that don't become backwaters. Managing change is a politicians job & it is they who must soften the blow for the newly disenfranchised - it's a pity that the workers in most countries don't vote for such politicians, instead they blame immigration & vote for the dog whistle pols who lie the best.
