Tom- you took a dog who was out of control and brought him to a calm state of mind in a very short time. Then, you were able to clearly articulate to the owner (without insulting her) how the dog needed to be trained, politely pointing out what she was doing wrong. That’s not just training- thats an art! Absolutely fantastic!

When we speak we transmit energy through sound vibrations. In order to transmit the best energy I think our mind has to be calm. Notice how when people get angry they act irrational and start to curse. So before we deal with people and other animals it's sometimes best to be in the right state of mind as to not create uneeded tensions.

Yes she is not assertive and definitely not the alpha in that pack which she needs to be. The dog is the alpha and knows he can get away with stuff. I am hoping she learned from her training and the dog has now improved as he is just beautiful.

There is also no trust in their relationship. It’s not just about being boss, it’s about cultivating a relationship with love and respect. This is why dogs left in the backyard alone while the family lives inside, often become unruly. They don’t have the relationship they need and they become resentful, on top of making decisions for themselves all day. My best dogs have been the ones I spent the most time with.

Exactly I totally agree, I am the boss in my house and German shepherd knows this without a doubt lol. With any dog they have to know who is the master but especially with this breed. They are very intelligent and will sense any type of weakness and take full advantage of that.

To me, this video just confirms that people do not prepare themselves for the animals they choose to have. I feel like in this case it is going to be more about retraining the owner than the dog. I wish people would realize this specially before getting a powerful breed. But sometimes we can only "get it" once we have the dog. I am glad this owner is trying to get the proper help and by the end of the video realized that she needs to change her behavior. Thanks for the awesome content and happy 4th!

AGREE 100%. Most people should not have these type of dogs and before they get one, be 110% devoted to training the dog and themselves. I have my first GSD, and have lots of experience with powerful breeds, just not a GSD... so was I over my head? no, because while its my first of this breed, I knew what I was getting into and even put myself and my dog back into training with a trainer to make sure I had the skills to manage her... what I have is a fabulous dog and we do everything together and she is always being worked, physically and mentally. The breeder is at fault as well, and homes should be screened to see if they are a proper fit. I'm glad the owner continued to find a trainer that would help her realize that before someone was mauled.

Lifehack: sign up to be a volunteer at a shelter. Walk some dogs. Most of them have a history, maybe fears, aggression, psychological/physical disorders. Pick a few you’ve walked with before and walk them from time to time. Train them, work on their issues. It’s really helpful, especially if you want a dog. Our local shelter has a huge dog, no idea what breed, he’s so energetic and playful yet fearful of men. I walked him once, in the Moscow winter, and he was pulling me *all the time*. Dogs like him need a lot of training, so you get experience whilst also helping a beautiful creature get a home.

I agree completely, when Tom was trying to incorporate the owner back into the training she was extremely arrogant suggesting that the dog already knew how to do all of that. If that's the case then why are you there?

You have an amazing amount of patience with the owners... It always amuses me with the fact that, too many owners are under the impression that an animal can comprehend entire sentences...

I've been a professional dog trainer for almost 49 years now & this is the first time I saw the show. LOVED it! My background is first military training of dogs, police then on to Service Dogs. Got the first Seizure Alert Dog Bill passed in the world in 2002. I would like you to KNOW that certain breeds DO understand more than single words in training. accepting complete sentences as they grow older just as a 6 year old child would. To constantly assume that their intelligence is so limited to single word commands is sad. There's a fabulous book out there called "Smarter Than You Think" you can get on Amazon. I understand where your coming from but at same time shes trying to do what she needs to make a successful relationship with her dog. If she continues working with upstate then I think they will be ok. Totally understand where your coming from though. I'm one that thinks if you take the responsiblity of owning a dog then you need to follow through all the way till the day on you die. In that time you have to learn and get better.

They’re beautiful dogs and very smart but people have no idea what they’re getting into. All the trainers around me, I’ve noticed that most of the dogs brought in are German Shepherds the owners couldn’t handle. Breed research is so important

That's not rude at all, I actually completely agree with you. You cannot have a powerful breed like that and think that just because you yell at it it's going to do what you say. You have to build trust, a relationship, and your dog has to trust in your commands otherwise it's anxiety is through the roof. She seems arrogant, aggressive, and not a good fit for a dog that needs to be properly trained or else will be stubborn. Maybe she should have gotten herself a shih Tzu.

Yeah, my dad was under the delusion that he was equipped to handle a German shepherd and 4 year old me paid the price for that when our dog scalped me and ripped off my ear. I'm lucky to be alive after that mauling. I'm not the kind of person who demonizes any specific breed but it REALLY upsets me when I see people getting dogs they have no business getting.

He is a gorgeous dog. The fact that the owner has come to this man to get help shows that she loves and cares for the dog. She is learning as well as the dog. I hope she doesnt give up.

Yea for sure. Everyone is always so quick to jump on the owners but sometiimes you have a tough nut of a dog with a softer owner and things don't gel, atleast at first.

It is awesome of you to put these online for free. I would have gone to a trainer and paid lots of money to get where i am now from a few weeks of seeing you work. Yes! This is my dog! He is a Solid Black GSD rescue with a lot of very bad habits and has become very aggressive in many situations! He is calming down a lot but still has a long road! Some walks are a dream, some a nightmare! These videos are so helpful! They always remind me of what I am doing wrong when a situation escalates and gets out of control. Thank you for all you do!

I have a rescue that was just like that, such s mess my wife thought no hope for him. I was determined and just kept working with him daily. Today I am so glad I did and she is as well. Don’t give up, they just need time and consistency. He is now for sure tied for top spot of best german shepherds I’ve ever had🙌

Both my female GSDs ( rescues) had issues. My first was extremely dog aggressive- spent 5k with a behaviorist- after trying several different trainer/ behaviorists ( that was 2006) She was never perfect but workable. It was extremely difficult because I have lived and worked out of an RV full time for over 20 yrs. Having a dog with severe aggression issues and no “ home base” is not easy! My current GSD is fear aggressive ( 100lb female) but “ workable “ .

Prioritize his issues that need work... he needs to be clearly taught that the aggressive behavior he has shown, which has been reinforced by everyone including Tom by backing away needs to be stopped immediately the build the relationship. The leash work I saw here did nothing to address his learned behavior as forward aggression, barking, biting. The trigger seems via this short video, body pressure, putting on a leash/collar I'm sure other triggers create the behavior and shouls have been identified during the eval. Good luck, be safe. The leash work should be secondary.

You would have done much better with a different breed of dog. The smaller dogs would be much better for you like a poodle or schitzu.This dog should have been rehomed to a younger family, possibly a male who has experience with GSD and large breeds. Taking on a large dog like that with problems is a recipe for disaster. I am surprised that you would have adopted a dog without previous experience working with this breed. Maybe this dog can be rehomed to a family with experience working with this breed. This is a working breed and he needs lots of exercise and a job to do. If you can barely walk him that is not good for the dog. Walks should never ever be a toss-up between a nightmare or a dream. It should be balanced. There are other breeds more suited for someone your age and your lack of experience. I would hate to see a good dog like this put down because it is in the hands of the wrong owner.

Wow. This is frightening to watch sometimes. You’re definitely doing what you’re meant to do in this lifetime. We’ve done copious amounts of research on training our pups, and we always find ourselves quoting you and using your techniques.

As a trainer/handler, you sir know your stuff. It’s such a pleasure watching your videos on my off time and love all the explanation you give. Far too often we see the end result on a lot of trainer videos. Keep up the great work. You’re one of my favorite.🙌🏽

Sheps are sooo smart and they will test you constantly. If the owner has health issues and had surgery, unfortunately a dog like this might not be best for her safety. He's a good boy, he just needs work. I hope she's able to keep up with him though!

Hello from France! I don't understand what this woman does with this good dog ... it's a work line and needs a lot of stimulation (physical and psychic) it's a real problem in france, and i try evey day to explain that we live with a caracter and a tempérament, not a dog costume... Sheps just need to work , run , jump and évacuate a big energy ; please madame take a cavalier king charles!

Sheps are indeed all of that our previous shep was such a bully that my dad had to wrestle for seven years before he exempted dad as alpha and he couldn't get help from even the nicest dog clubs due to the lineage of blood from the fathers side that also was a really hard dog, but he turned to best boi after that

The owner is much more stubborn than that beautiful dog 😅🥰 what a wonderful people trainer you are for these amazing animals 🙏🏽♥️

At 17:10 of this video, you answered a question I have had literally for years! This was a great demonstration of "how to communicate a correction to your dog when he gets to the end of the leash before you can preemptively curb the bad behavior you're trying to avoid." A quick whipping type action of the leash so it creates the give needed for the corrective "yank" to take place. It's so simple, but to see it done by a source of information that I trust is helpful beyond description. Thank you so much!!! I have a foster doggo with some serious reactivity toward strangers and most dogs, and your videos have given this GSD a second chance at life!

It would be really cool to see an update video with some of the more reactive/ difficult dogs we’ve seen in your videos to see how they’ve progressed in a less controlled environment. Great channel, love the videos 👍🏼

I have had pitbull's for 30 years now .no i have never bred or sold animals .just 1 or 2 at a time .in house with me and always knew when i said something they better know i mean it the first time never have whipped or had to put my hands on in anyway. mostly its all in the tone of my voice. Never have been bit or never had one turn on me.just my babies until old age finally got them i love what you do for these animals and their owners. Stay safe

I'm 5 ft 4 and have two Black Russian Terriers. Size has nothing to do with it. Training is. I don't agree with prong collars though. I use a half check on my two and don't have issues.

@@roughhdiamond168 Prong collars are great tools when used correctly. Dogs necks are protected by tons of fur and have much thicker skin than human necks. And comparing a Russian terrier with a GSD is an apples and oranges comparison.

That dog wasn't loaded. He was fine with taking corrections without coming at the handler and isn't what I'd even consider close to Red zone. Maybe yellow/orange. The owner created the behavior by not being clear, and the dog is acting out of frustration from confusion, which gets reinforced every time the owner gives up on whatever task was at hand. Too much negative engagement with the dog from her. This is all OK because she was unaware, and luckily she admitted she needs more work than the dog. Keep it black and white. Command-Correction. Command-Correction.

Definitely agree! He does everything, positive reinforcement to the vibration only collars. Like- you can't get better than that, and he has a good kind soul and it just seems like he knows how to approach every problem . Though this dude Normally does bigger dogs like dobermen and German shepherds.

Props to that owner. It’s difficult to humble yourself and take the direction *you* need to train this guy correctly. She’s obviously put a lot of effort into him, is acknowledging it didn’t work and is putting renewed effort (and financial investment!) into helping him. Glad she found Tom.

I can absolutely see how this happens. I’m at a huge fork in the road with my dog. Had I not been prepared and then immediately realized I needed help, and got a trainer, my dog would potentially have the same issues as this dog. I prepared for months and immediately went to work on day one with my shelter adopted dog, knowing I’d likely still need help from a pro. If I had let my pride get in the way and think I could conquer this alone I’d be in the same place this lady is. Now my dog will have every opportunity to be the best version of himself! I’m grateful because this channel was a huge part of my preparation for this dog!

Incredible work, Tom. Once again. What you are able to do with dogs most people are afraid of and most trainers would fail with, blows my mind.

I need to hear these things over and over. I automatically fall back into discussing things with my dog instead of just telling her. Getting better! Wish i knew this stuff four dogs ago lol. But they were easy care labradors. One even taught himself to heel lol. Anyways. Love the videos.

I ababsolutely love your training methods. Keep advocating for the dogs, they need your voice.

My GSD is the same size as him and you've got to be really firm with them but fair. This dog has definitely been allowed to rule the roost and they weren't realising until it's too late. Ours would try and be a brat in his teem years but we corrected it each time and now he's maturing into a great dog he'll be 2 in August

I think that woman is blessed to finally have found you to correct her dog and her as well. So many people own particular breeds of dogs that are very smart, strong, and strong-willed like Shepherds, and have no clue how to handle them, or what they're doing wrong. I have three GSDs, the youngest 1 yr old, and I booked an hour online phone call with Tom because I recognized that I needed advice on how to handle a couple of his behaviors. I hope that woman makes great progress with Tom's help. That's a beautiful dog. P.S. I swear by the Sprenger collars. They literally are life-savers.

Great video for showing that even a hard yank on a prong collar didn't saw the dogs head off or even cause it to yelp. And also the hard yank on a prong still had to be repeated multiple times on a large dog in an excited state of mind. Adrenaline and endorphins are amazing things! No tool is 100% effective, a 100% of the time.

I have been watching your videos for years. You have no idea HOW MUCH you helped me and my dogs relationship. Thank you so much Tom ! You are amazing !

@@KenKaniffFromConnecticut 🤣I studied it for a week before using it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 It worked so well instantly, as I FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS, and my dog was saved from a lifetime of misery. She was SO terrified to step off the front porch. She was found running scared in the streets outside of Washington DC. the Hermsprenger enabled her to break thru her trauma by use of the reflex to "obey" the pseudo-nip on her neck. She is now fully operational on an electronic collar which she graduated to, only OCCASIONALLY having to go back to the Hermsprenger for a few days when she gets stubborn. I'm sorry. You did NOT need to know all that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I guess I'm hoping to help someone with it if they read this. 🔥

Bless her for not giving up, and you for saving the pups life 💚

Wow this is great! He was able to obey so well at the end! Definitely want to to try that collar with my husky/boxer who pulls like crazy and needs to understand verbal compliance. Honestly, a lot of owners don’t realize how ineffective yelling and negative energy can be towards their dogs.

Not only ineffective but the moment you get mad , you lost the battle . Keeping cool head and continuing working on obedience even when they drive you up the wall is VERY important .The moment you get amped up they do it too and that makes it near impossible in that moment to regain control .

Very well done, Tom. Oddly enough, I just came in from working a client dog on a prong. Great dog, but he's very unfocused and could pull his owner off her feet if not for the prong. He was thinking he could get away with that with me as I'm not the one who walks him, but he found out quickly that not paying attention was not going to work well for him. I love how fast the prong (a Herm Sprenger) used properly changes everything. My client dog went from all over the place to heel, sit, come, break ... rinse and repeat :)

@@ShiftWins This isn't my first training client. I've been intentionally training dogs for 30 years...unintentionally for 50 years. This client started out as me evaluating this dog as a new puppy. Because the owner was hoping the puppy would become a service dog for her, I referred her to a trainer who is experienced with service dog training (I'm more like Tom... behavior based...although I will do puppy training and basic obedience as well...the bulk of my business is behavior modification). This dog is still in training with the other trainer and I've been pet sitting him from just after I evaluated him. He is better behaved for his owner and likes to test me (it's a test he can't win, but he's persistent). The other trainer put him on a prong collar for the same reason I would have...he is smart and darling, but very unprincipled (my term for lacking focus and being "all over the place"). He is a good example of why prong collars are important...his owner can walk him because he wears it. Without it, she would be in danger of being pulled down to the ground when he sees something he wants (i.e. rabbit, bird, etc.) I hope I answered your question. :)

Shelley Jo Neal it doesn’t hurt the dog it applies a pressure not pain the pressure actually calms the dog they use them on service dogs etc you just have to fit it properly and learn how to give corrections so you don’t confuse the dog

Amen! Say it once, then correct if needed. I have a mega anxious dog. I’ve learned, the less words and more action from me, the WAY better! You’re teaching so many ppl who probably used to feel hopeless. I know I did... but not anymore! Our walks are actually enjoyable now and I can take him in public!🙂

This is a good dog. It’s just too much dog for her. As humans we need to realize that for the benefit of the dog’s life. I really hope she can change her yelling at him or he will never listen. She needs to tire him out instead of just taking him for a walk. I know with mine he is 90 pounds. He would be too much dog for me if I didn’t use a prong. I’m so thankful I had mine in school since he was 5 weeks old. He’s so good. He will drop on a recall, but we still need work. Going to buy a Hemspringer for sure.

Lani I own a very large GSD he was “too much dog for me” I learned too. That collar(s) will change your life. My dog is still over protective, but I can handle him on the snap of a finger. My problem was, I was so grateful for him, (he is illness aware) he got away with being a little to aggressive. So reminders like this are perfect. I use 3 different collars. His life is amazing. I have a lifetime guarantee with training. So I have been back. he has a great life. Hang in there girl! But understand we make our dog’s life harder when we don’t use our skills we have learned. Any dog with size or without size.

I had a bratty lab. I started using the prong collar and it saved my life by not being pulled in traffic and his because I was about to give up on him. I needed the safety clip because he used to twist on the ground and get out of his collar. He was a runner. If he got loose he ran. I rescued him at 18 months where he was let loose with no training. He didn’t know his name. He was never told to sit or lay down. Imagine. He is really good now. The difference with my bratty dog is that he was never agressive and never tried to nip at anyone.

I've been training for 20 years - eventually specializing in dogs that bite their owners. I go to the home and train them there. I must say, out of any trainer I have ever encountered, you are THE BEST. You train exactly the way I do. I am a huge FAN!

Hello I am from Germany and I am the owner of a 5 year old Akita male, not neutered. I always have to be amazed at how quickly you can do it, for which I needed many, many repetitions. In the meantime, I have managed to have a steady, balanced and calm companion by my side. But it was a long and hard road for me. Since I was a beginner and the breed excited me because of the looking. My dog is looking like hatchiko. I won't make that mistake again. During the first 3 years I was always looking for help and effective training, I looked at many, many trainers, personally and virtually. I was able to learn more personally from one trainer and less from the other. Everything is just right for you. I agree with each exercise and would do the same. You're the absolute best I've watched in years. Sometimes it is unfortunately very difficult to follow you because you speak very quickly and English is not my mother tongue. I love every single video of you. 💖💖💖 Thank you for your work. 💞

I love all your videos, but this one is particularly great! I've been a trainer for 50+ years and we are on the same page re techniques and beliefs. I love that you talked about the state of mind of the dog. That is a crucial point in any activity that you do with a dog! Kudos!

the way that dog flinches at 1:50 makes me think that shes hit him pretty seriously in the past. I'm not even two minutes in and I can already tell that she isn't much of a patient woman by how she talks to her dog.

Fantastic video. I can say from experience that as a dog owner, I had to learn to properly handle my dog. A lot of us make so many mistakes. Tom makes it look simple but delivering the “pop” is all about timing and i had to condition MYSELF to do it through trial and error and lots of practice.

@@kathymcguire4531 yes. The trainer doesn’t need her spreading and she doesn’t need to breathe in from him if he’s a carrier. When you get sick, you will join the millions who today realize this isn’t a joke or a hoax.

I’ve had two black females. One, a K9 that was absolutely amazing. She out worked and out performed all the boys most of the time. And then after she passed I had one given to me and she was a box of rocks but one of the sweetest, and smartest dogs I’ve ever had. But she was undisciplined because I was injured and couldn’t work with her. I love GSs. I’m trying to find one to be my service dog right now.

T Deeb I’m also looking for a service dog! GSD is on the list, but I’m not sure I’ll find one big enough for what I need. I’m looking for a 95-100 lb dog for mobility and medical alert, so I’ve gone through a lot of breeds that unfortunately are too small although otherwise perfect.

I ordered that herm Springer and I have a 130 pound German Shepherd. He used to pull us up and down the street but that Herm Springer is a miracle worker now we can actually enjoy walking our dog

I appreciate you SO much dude !!! Your expertise, your gift of training a dog is AMAZING !!! You've obviously saved a lot of dogs from euthanasia, and being someone who rescues, retrains and re-homes dogs, I thank you. We need more of you out there so dogs don't die because they've been trained to the best of the fur parent's knowledge, but wrong and detrimental to the baby. YOU ROCK !!! 🤗🤗🤗

This guy is awesome. Since it’s been 2 years, I wish we could get an update. I feel like this dog could have become an excellent dog if his owner just made sure to stay very consistent and didn’t allow his bad behavior to go unchecked.

Until you have a dog you don't realise how hard it can be to train them but you need to start early or it just gets harder the longer you wait

I've helped several owners with super strong dogs by giving them Herm Springer pinch collars. They fought my initially, but once the owners stopped falling, getting hurt, etc., they were enthusiastic supporters. I called the HS prongs "power steering" for your dog to get them to relate it to something they understood. One of the major reasons I enjoy your training so much is how you have a toolbox filled with a variety of tools (which you continue to expand) where you can find the best fit for the owner and the dog! Thanks for sharing your knowledge as always!
