The Soulbound System is really good, and this campaign setting seems to have a vaguely Western feel which is cool.

First off, quality review (as always). All of the Soulbound suppliments seem to have these random encounter tables; though not MAJOR events they can change up the game enough that players who have played the game before don't know whats comming. I'm about to run the Soulbound Starter set adventure which one of the players has read, but the book has random tables on encounters, events, and even who the end baddie is which will change the whole game (you roll to see who the end baddie is at the start of the game). These 'random encounters' arn't like the D&D completely random kind, they usually link back and inform the main quest in some way. 11:05 As far as killing off a close NPC member of the team - yikes! this is harsh GMing in the first session of a game, no? & if the team are newbies they will not have had time to develop a meaningful bond yet, save something for session 3/4! One of the cool rules in Soulbound is the Doom Track which is ment to be reflected in the events of the world. Lower doom means less harsh events so saving this kind of high voltage emotional loss for when the Doom Track is high would be the normal GMing strategy. Is the NPC death more trying to say Ghyran may be the realm of life but its dangerous here. 15:13 Player Characters are ment to be selected by their god and are by default classically heroic in order to be 'Soulbound', the question "Why are we trying to save the city?" can be largley by-passed. Personally I hate Soulbounds super hero level of adventureing, but my friends love power gaming so I end up GMing it, & I have to admit it is one of the best RPG systems around. The writing is a perfect balanced between discriptive and scripted. At least with the suppliments I have read I feel I can run the adventure in the game and then have a free hand in making up adventures in the city, without clashing with over-written NPCs.

I'm still torn on whether or not I wanna run Soul Bound. Is it as crunchy as Warhammer Fantasy? My players really don't like crunch.

Heyo! Designer of Soulbound here. The game was purposely designed to be welcoming to new players and fans of the battlegame (hence the d6 pools). It is very straightforward to get into, with super fast combat and dice resolution. It has a lot of depth, especially with all the books we've released, but is SIGNIFICANTLY lighter on crunch than WFRP

Soulbound is less crunchy than WFRP. Far fewer case specific things and crunchy edge-case rules. Less rules to keep track of. I've loved WFRP and it's themes since the beginning, but it's long lists of rule changing specials can get rather bloated and unwieldy. Especially for those who are inexperienced with it. Though Soulbound is defintely more superheroic. It is much more high-powered and, therefore, different from WFRP in that sense, however. You're not going to get the peasants-to-heroes arc you can in WFRP. If that's what you're looking for.
