Man! when this game came out, I loved it so much that I ended up playing all night long and had to call in sick the next day to keep playing it. It was and still is the Best!.

The original AOE2, before the HD & Definitive editions were a thing, holds a special place in my heart. I first played it when I was about 5-6-ish probably, so 2000, 2001. As a kid I was infatuated with all things related to knights, and castles, and the middle ages in general, so naturally I was OBSESSED with AOE2. It was one of those games I never grew tired of as years passed. And so it went from me playing it the couple of hours I was allowed to on the family computer.. to playing it in my room when my family got a new computer and I was given the old one.. to having LAN parties with friends, carrying our heavy-heavy-HEAVY setups back and forth, making sure everyone had the same version, and hoping all planets align so we all can play! Playing together back then was a whole day’s project, but the effort and struggle was sort of part of it and made that night extra special when you made DAMN SURE not a single second was wasted, so you played until the sun rose. Then life happens! Friends move away, we get busy with our individual responsibilities, and what have you, yet we found ways! Whether it was through Voobly, or squeezing in that once- or twice a year get-together with our laptops, or when the HD edition eventually came out and we switched over to using Steam, which.. while it’s so much more convenient in every imaginable way, just never quite felt the same. Anyway, to not make a long story longer, AOE2 is special. To this very day, even with some of my childhood friends now being everything from parents, to full-time workers, with one even running their own business, we somehow STILL find time to occasionally sit down and play AOE2 together like it was 2001, 2005, 2010, 2013- etc, etc, all over again. ❤

Been playing this game since 2003, and been keeping the old laptop for this game only!

The game is still out there. And I found that someone made two expansion packs that weren't Microsoft. If you play on Windows 7 64 Bit you have to change the DPI which takes a changed code input for the registry for the graphics because there are breaks. The problem is the coded input I found warms up comps. But AOE 2 will play on Windows 7.

when i was 7 my dad read the manual to Sanitarium for me c:... yea i was introduced and intrigued by extreme psychological horror early, very early like tunnel b1 artwork at 4 and syndicate at 3 with my dad playing quake 1 and 2 when i was very little while i played wolfenstein 3d and doom 2 at 5 years old. Nazi's and hitler already then XD

I used to use them to scout as well but sometimes a wolf would kill them and they would be gone. I used to think they switched sides with the enemy (little did they know I was building an army to annihilate them to oblivion) good ol sheep!

Me and my friend couldn't afford this so we went 50/50 (this was back around like 1999/2000 or something) and we needed the disc to load it up but not to play, so one of us would load it up and ride our bike to the others house with the disc so then we could play it together lmao. I played the shit out of this game for years i'd just randomly get the urge to take down some other civilizations. Might have to find a way to play it just cuz it's been so long. I think I still have age of mythology laying around somewhere too in my old stuff haha

That was ultra nostalgic..

can anyone tell me that is age of empies 2 on internet archive safe (the one with 19000 views and uploaded by unknown?)

Part of what makes the original Age of Empires version (released in year 1998 and it's expansion The Rise of Rome released in 1998) incredible to me is the splendid graphics and gameplay, i play it to this present day in year 2020. There are a few problematical bug issues with artificial intelligence computer AI which thereby enables easy victory but first i want to state the Age of Empires: Definitive Edition has undeniably fantastically brilliant graphics of excellence, i'm not complaining about it, even though at times i feel it wasn't needed i nevertheless think it's superlative. They could have left original Age of Empires as it was while adding increased population caps 500 to 1000 units in random maps, death match and other game modes against enemy computer artificial intelligence and also adding new civilizations therewith consisting of large variety of villagers with various physical appearances, diverse military units of more variety in physical appearance and variation in building style architecture with plenteous vast varied technologies to research, such improvements would be comprised of outstanding wonderful exquisite splendorousness, however as i say the Definitive Edition of Age of Empires has completely improved overhauled graphics consisting of superb new animations, i shall hereby mention a few such as for example ways in which buildings collapse after being destroyed or being able to walk over farms instead of them functioning similar to buildings which thereto leads units getting stuck in a particular spot lol, the whole walking over farms mechanic idea was introduced first in original Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings which was released in year 1999 and also The Conquerors expansion released in year 2000 which continues gameplay brilliance of The Age of Kings. Artificial intelligence in Age of Empires 2 and The Conquerors expansion is superior especially on the difficulties hard and hardest, it doesn't possess troubling problematical bugs such as artificial intelligence AI contained within Age of Empires 1. Artificial intelligence in both Age of Empires 1 and Age of Empires 2 on hard and hardest difficulty is totally relentless, vicious, barbaric, callous, unforgiving, filled with potent brutal ferociousness, remorselessness, mercilessness, pitilessness and fierceness which is marvellous because i enjoy a challenge, i derive enjoyment therefrom, however when i play Age of Empires 2 and The Conquerors expansion on Hard or hardest difficulty i always therewith have at least two other civilizations who is my ally lol, for safety purposes. If artificial intelligence which was used in Age of Empires 2 was also utilized in Age of Empires 1 it would be supremely magnificent. When i play Age of Empires Rise of Rome i set it on hard or hardest difficulty enabling maximum number of players with two other civilizations as my allies, without allies you won't survive lol, even sometimes while having two allies there's always an enormous possibility of being obliterated by enemy Artificial intelligence. Age of Empires 1 and all the bugs contained therein mostly due to enemy computer AI have been removed in Age of Empires 2 thereby making it a supremely superior game. It might be erroneous what i'm expressing to some extent but i'd think majority of Age of Empires series fans agree original Age of Empires 2 and it's expansion is a better more improved upon version of Age of Empires 1. Now when it comes to the definitive editions of both Age of Empires 1 and Age of Empires 2 i hereby fully welcome them, game developers did a massively spectacular job. Let me mention it again the population caps should be increased 500 to 1000 units against enemy artificial intelligence in both Age of Empires 1 and Age of Empires 2, that option should exist thereby leading to creation of astronomical armies causing absolute utter chaos in it's totality whereby every civilization wreak havoc on each other. Cheats is something i never use while playing Age of Empires series of games, employing cheats in video games removes fun out of it.

Played the DS version of this game and it was my favorite game on the system, it is quite different from this game though being a turn based game but many of the sounds (animals, characters saying stuff when selected) were the exact same. Will try this version out too.

There are 3 Versions you can get, there is the original version from 1999 (AoE2), but there is also an HD Edition and a Definitive Edition.

Ever since I was about 4ish I have bee. Playing this game on the PS2, and I’m still playing it on that old device today

The MIDI music can be enabled by downloading the demo, putting the MIDI folder into the Sound folder of the full game and creating a shortcut with "-midimusic".

Now that I think about it it might have had something to do with not playing with a disc inserted, I do remember it happening specifically with the Rise of Rome expansion pack :P All the tracks are on KZread somewhere
