Agape - Love

The word “love” is one of the sloppiest words in our language, as it primarily refers to a feeling that happens to a person. In the New Testament, “love” or "Agape" refers to a way of treating people that was defined by Jesus himself: seeking the well-being of others regardless of their response.

After 26 years of my life and losing my faith somewhere on the way, this video made me finally realise why Jesus had to sacrifice himself and die for us. He didn't really have to. And by letting His "enemies" "win" He ultimately showed us that there are no real enemies in life and It is not about winning with anyone. This touched me deeply.

Well, Tierra, to do that we must obey Jesus. Luke 14:33 "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple." Luke 12:33-34 "[33] Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. [34] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matthew 6:19-21 "[19] Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matthew 6:24-34 "[24] No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. [25] Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? [26] Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? [27] Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? [28] And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: [29] And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. [30] Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? [31] Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? [32] (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. [33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. [34] Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof." Matthew 28:19-20 "[19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20],Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." John 14:15 "If ye love me, keep my commandments." John 14:21, 23-24 "[21] He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. [23] Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. [24] He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me." John 6:27 "Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed." We must obey Jesus, as Christians. Stop working for money, for the food and drink that perishes! Did Jesus work for money? Did Paul? Did Peter? Did John? No, and for those that had done it, like Peter, they left all and followed Jesus. We *need* to do this too. Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." Matthew 6:24 "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." We have to do this. This measns quitting your job, selling all that you have, giving the money to the poor, and obeying the Great Commission. Please, read the four Gospels humbly, realizing everything Jesus told us to do is still essential and fundamental for us today, and teach others to do this same thing.

While the video was mostly good, it did not answer the question of what "agape" means. It can mean "love", but can also mean an "unhealthy attachment". There are at least 6 places in the Bible where it is portrayed as a bad thing, and Jesus even condemns some people for having agape! Luke 6:32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. Here we see that sinners “agape” each other. Luke 11:43 Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Jesus condemns the Pharisees for having “agape”! John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. Jesus condemns men for having “agape”!! 2Timothy 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Paul rebukes Demas for having “agape”. 2Peter 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; Peter shows that Balaam’s “agape” was bad. 1John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. If any man has this “agape”, the “agape” of the Father is not in him. So we clearly see that there are times in the Bible when “agape” refers to a love of something definitely not of God.

statutesofthelord You missed the whole meaning of real agape. While you are right, they “loved” the things that made their lives better, that’s not agape. Agape doesn’t translate exactly to love. It specifically means the selflessness side of Love and not the word “love” that we use so loosely. We can’t put “agape” in place of every time the word love is used. Agape isn’t the same love you’re thinking, if that makes sense

  • @chatriendiananggraeni3828

I think "agape" is more like pure love. Maybe in this world, love is prefer like "I love you cause you love" or "I love you cause you are kind to me". But the meaning of Agape is like "I love you 'although' you didn't like me" or "I love you 'although' you broken my heart" or "I love you 'although' you bullied me".

  • @justmyusername9209

+Kevin Castro Every verse that statuesofthelord quoted uses a form of the greek word "agape" in it. So his point is quite valid that agape is not always used in a good way as something of God. You're right that it shouldn't be put in place of everywhere we would use the word love - but that's not what he was saying - he only quoted places where agape was the very word used. so when you say "you are right, they “loved” the things that made their lives better, that’s not agape." Well, actually according to the greek it is. I understand the emphasis of agape that believers use, and I have no problem with it, I agree even - just pointing out that statutesofthelord has a point (something I recently discussed with a greek scholar because I noticed these usages when reading my greek nt) that the word is sometimes used in different ways.

Unconditional love is only possible when you see yourself as absolutely equal to everyone else. Seeing God in both yourself and also in every other person allows you to empathize with their individual circumstances and to extend to them compassion, understanding, forgiveness, and love. This is possible even for those who have hurt you the most. Thich Nhat Hanh has many amazing teachings on love and reconciliation in modern times and among the most polarized groups. I believe he has worked with several Jewish and Palestinian groups, as well. 🙏🏼

Thanks to you, Jon and Tim, I had an unsuspected insight about feet. They're the lowliest and most neglected appendage, usually out-of-sight, yet we're utterly dependent upon them for our well being. They're a marvel of engineering, and even beauty when cared for. So are the poor, often, who labor long and hard without recognition or rewards. They carry us from darkness to light, just as Jesus did. Great work, guys! The animation of our LORD washing someone's foot opened my eyes, even after 60 years of study.

So very true, great insights brother! I would like to add that one quickly takes notice of the most neglected appendage when stubbing a pinky toe upon a coffee table. Even the lowly pinky toe matters and deserves attention

Something that I find amazing about this, is that his disciples would've been wearing thin sandals or no shoes at all for miles in very hot weather, walking through disgusting stuff. And Jesus still humbled himself and cleansed them. It reminds me of myself, I am a disgusting sinner but Jesus still cleanses me and renews me anyway because of my faith. Praise Jesus ❤ I am a 14 year old and I love Jesus so much
