I envy Aphex Twin so much. Tons of musical genius, and tons of gear in his house to make music with. I'm slowly building a collection of gear, so maybe I can one day be like him and support myself by making music in my basement. Although he does it in a former bank (in the vault I hear, what a cool place to put a studio! I wonder if he locks the giant vault doors every night with his gorgeous gear inside?). I'll never be like Aphex Twin, but the trying, the journey, it satisfies the soul.

Some much needed music to my ears. No words, just the perfect sounds. Confucius, if he were alive today, would be honored to know that people like Richard exist. People capable of speaking through their instruments as well as, if not better than, we are capable of speaking through our mouths, pens or text.

Why do you care about what Confucius thinks?
@ABitOfTheUniverse
9 жыл бұрын
Mkei D A story I've found a lot of musicians have been told at some point or another in their lives, about the way Confucius taught his pupils to speak through their instruments. It has been conveyed to me by teachers, friends and people who I respected for their insight. The common thread each story had was that Confucius taught his students the importance of being able to communicate through their instruments. Whether it be to convey sorrow, to raise spirits or to boost morale; whatever the reason the instrument allows the musician to convey a message to an audience they may not otherwise have had the opportunity to do. To some people that can be a message to yourself. You can make the instrument speak to you and help you unlock thoughts and emotions you may not have been capable of having in any other way. In my early teens I read something similar about Confucius in a book but at the time I didn't understand what was meant by it. Now, as I've aged and been moved by thousands of pieces of music and seen the effect that it has on people besides myself, I have come to appreciate that message, despite the specific reason that Confucius may have had for teaching his pupils to play instruments. See, some people have a very difficult time expressing how they feel in any conventional way, but when it comes to making sounds or mixing them together in such a way that a unique experience can be had by the audience and the artist, well, that is something important. Not just for the artist but for the entire community with whom they share what they have created. For me that captures a very important part of not only what music is but the value of communication between organisms like us and how it can come in many forms. Now, with the internet, you can look into this story and see for yourself how true it was or what or where it started, but back when I heard abut it it was just books and word of mouth and that allowed people to add their own twists to it and I appreciate each of the people and their unique slants on the story, for what they were separately. But, again, the common thread was that it was Confucius who was the one responsible for teaching his students to speak through their instruments and Richard speaks in some of the most unique ways I have ever heard. I hope this answers some part of your question Mkei D I wish I had some list of books or some videos that I could recommend that might better emphasize how important Confucius was to music, not just in China but in the way that his attitude about music spread from there to the Middle East, Europe and the rest of the world, but, all the sources that I learned from (people, books, etc.) are either dead, I've lost touch with them, or they were a few of many books I poured over in libraries during my youth as I sought to learn more about aspects of the world that were at the time unknown to me in my youth. Perhaps you even know more of the truth behind this story than I? Maybe you can share your perspective on it, or, at least, what music means to you?

ABitOfTheUniverse I see. That's very beautiful man. Any sort of creative expression has some emotional meaning behind it in my opinion. Recently music has got me listening in that way, more than it has before. It takes some wisdom to recognize that i guess! Which is where Confucius comes in. I see. Thanks for the info by the way. You seem very knowledgeable!

Aphex Twin videos are the only ones that work with the autoplay feature on YT, I mean conceptually. If you let it autoplay with Aphex Twin, you end up just listening, just let it keep playing random AT stuff while you work. With other videos it just gets annoying, but with AT I think it's pretty cool to just let it go random. Maybe ambient music is best when we don't even control which tracks are being played, just relinquish control and see where you end up.

That would be nostalgia; for the lack of a physical manifestation of the music you like as it has been in the pastoooo. Music is great at tying memories to them. Read a book while listening to the same album over and over, wait a month or two, listen to even one song on the CD you'll remember everything. It feels like a 6th sense... memory through the interpretation of music by your brain.

I like how richard d james just makes good music.
Richard D. James is truly self-employed. His heart and soul are in this song.
One time when I was very, very depressed ( :P ) I cried listening to this song... Just pulled the tears out of me. Was a very strange feeling :D

If we kept ourselves in the company of great Souls all the time, we would never get depressed.
I don’t know why this gives me some kind of melancholy as if I knew this song as a child
The first time I heard this track, I didn’t understand it, but I knew it sounded like something really unique. The second time I listened, I was driving home after a crazy writing spree. It hit me out of nowhere - I suddenly understood the track completely. I cried the rest of the way home. This track is a special one.
This track feels so personal, like it's a private memory for me.

Gotta be one of his most underrated golden oldies
Aphex Twin videos are the only ones that work with the autoplay feature on YT, I mean conceptually. If you let it autoplay with Aphex Twin, you end up just listening, just let it keep playing random AT stuff while you work. With other videos it just gets annoying, but with AT I think it's pretty cool to just let it go random. Maybe ambient music is best when we don't even control which tracks are being played, just relinquish control and see where you end up.

such an amazing song, definitely one of his best, the Analord series is the greatest series of records ever
for years, a part of the melody in this song reminded me of another tune i know and i just figured it out. the damn brady bunch! :08 through :14 sounds like "here's a story... of a lovely lady... who was bringing up three very lovely girls" just hum the melody in the same key as self employed and it's more or less there!

That’s it. I’m listening to this insanely long set today. (320 minutes - WAV files from RDJ’s rephlex website (when they were still active). Lots of unreleased and alternate tracks. It’s all so good.
One of his best
this song is so beautiful. the first time I heard it I didn't get it. but man it's totally got the wabi-sabi. I'm trying not to cry at work.

a very warm and nostalgic sound. less dark than a lot of his stuff that I've heard. but the dark stuff is good sometimes too.
I have gladly contributed at least two thousand of views to this video.

this is one of my favorite Analord tracks...
I feel that all the time, i mean i get surprised by the songs, no matter how many times i heard them. I must be listening to much AFX.
you can tell this is a song of celebration in the unique style of afx...and from the song title.
cuando uno se descubre, en el instante que quiere y no podria amar mas. reconocer esta brillantes.
..amazing..
Same, this song makes me feel an emotion I have never felt before, same with Halibut Acid, Reunion 2, Libson Acid, VBS.Redlof.D, PWSteal.Ldpinch.D, god the list is endless.
I can't help but feel that this song could have been so much more. It's like it's stuck in its primitive stages, but it's still so damn good.
I was born in 96, and Aphex Twin made me a fan in one day. I love his songs. It's something familiar and i can't put on my hands on what.
I woke up and this song came to my mind.
IMO, this is best song of the whole analord series, it should have been on the chosen lords album
Thanks for this momento now i feel like im friend of electrónics
perfect
Genius
This wasn't on chosen Lords??!?!?! Why!!!!!
That would be nostalgia; for the lack of a physical manifestation of the music you like as it has been in the pastoooo. Music is great at tying memories to them. Read a book while listening to the same album over and over, wait a month or two, listen to even one song on the CD you'll remember everything. It feels like a 6th sense... memory through the interpretation of music by your brain.
wonderful song :]
just got a few AFX and aphex twin (same person, just under a different name) albums on vinyl for christmas, this song is so good on vinyl.
That just tripped me out and i still cant even hear it!
awesome!
you sir, are my idol.
love the ending O_o

Might be the best song ever made.
