After Hours - Why Movies Want Us To Torture Adults

Комедия

90s movies, like Heavyweights and Hook, were great tutorials on how to torture and murder adults while making kids believe all those violent acts of trauma wouldn't leave any permanent damage.

Tinker Bell still does that in the movie, though. Hell, the mermaids admit to trying to drown Wendy, and when Wendy tries to defend herself, Peter physically and verbally punishes her before going to save another woman who loves him and ignoring Wendy. Wow… it took me this long to realise just how messed up the story of Peter Pan is when it comes to 100% of the female characters.

Uh, I thought a big part of "Hook" was that, viewed from an adult perspective, all the things you thought were so scary as a child--for instance, *being* an adult--aren't really as bad, and you just need to face it down. Hence the over-the-top Hook performance: he's not so menacing now, he's just kind of pathetic and annoying.

Ok now do one on how children's cartoons today are teaching kids that adults are completely incompetent. Have you seen an educational kids show where the parents or adults in general roles of authority who aren't fumbling idiots who are screwing up and need to be saved by children? Seriously if I was a child growing up watching these things I would have the hardest time trusting or relying on adults for help with anything. To a degree I get it and agree that parents don't have all the right answers or make all the right decisions all the time. And the old ways of the pre 90's where kids were taught that adults decisions are absolute and unquestionable actually put children into harms way more than people admit. There has to be a middle ground on this that teaches kids that parents don't always know what's best but they have their reasons and they will be there for them when shit gets bad and they aren't on their own.

Sometimes I wish they made a movie or tv show where they showed it was smart to actually listen to our parents. I mean our parents for the most part understand you on a deeper level, you could probably learn at least something from them about life. But most movies glorify the idea that kids are always smarter than their parents. Is this just me?

For me that's To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus doesn't do a lot of direct parenting on screen but is every scene it's clear that he's a wise adult and the children are children. The Disney Pinocchio is sort of that except Pinocchio's father isn't in the film that much. The parents in the incredibles are like that, adults trying and failing to keep the kids out of trouble but always supportive. In Cheaper by the Dozen the kids are a little neglected because the parents are pulled in so many directions, but on the whole they're good parents who try to keep their kids safe and respectful by giving reasonable rules and things are better when the kids listen. Edward Scissorhands has very very supportive foster(?) parents who take him in and keep him safe. There's a few if you look.

The Wet Bandits weren't exactly responsible adults. Also Kevin makes friends with two adults and they're not crazy. Also isnt the pt of that movie overall to say that its fun to be irresponsible sometimes but at the end of the day you still need your parents. Hey maybe the pt of all these isnt that adulthood sucks, but that adulthood doesnt mean that you have all your shit together and thats normal and ok

@@danielgehring7437 Not sure Gummi bears have parents in the traditional sense. They kind of look like they're raised communally, like gargoyles. And Tummi was a very young adult. Maybe early twenties or late teens I guess. Gusto, who came later, I'm guessing is mid 20's. (Yes, I know he's technically older, but since I'm not sure how long a gummi live, I think he's equivalent.)

I was talking about Heavyweights with my cousins and brother in law, namely how it is a prequel to Dodgeball. Since both star Ben Stiller, and he becomes fat at the end, and Dodgeball has his character say he was fat and got in shape.

Going to call out the mistake of Darkwing Duck lacking parents. Kind of a big part of the show is the Drake adopts Gosalyn and the Muddlefoots being traditional parents.

Plus we don't know the status of the parents of Huey Dewey and Luey's parents. Were they bad parents, were they killed, are they in a situation where they otherwise can't be with their sons? For all we know, Della Duck just left the boys with Donald because she was on the run from Negaduck or something

Ailish Forner There's no such thing as an adult. There is no age where you become this fabled always responsible, all knowing, "Adult". Life is just a series of events you learn from. Shit happens, you learn how to deal with it, then some other shit happens, and you learn how to deal with that. On and on until you die. We're all just a bunch of really old kids trying our best.
