Joey Korenman (00:17): What's up guys, Joey here at school of motion.com. And in this video, we are going to talk about one of my favorite topics, which is nuke. And what I'm going to try and do is show you the difference between a layer based composite or like after effects and a node based compositor, like nuke one isn't necessarily better than the other. They're just different tools. And depending on what task you're doing, one might be a little bit easier to use. And I know a lot of you guys out there have probably never used nuke and you may really just kind of be scared of it. And so I want to show you how it works and why it's so cool and why can actually be useful to a motion graphics artists and not just a visual effects artists. So let's hop in and get started. So we're going to start in after effects since I'm sure that's what most of you are more comfortable with.
Joey Korenman (00:59): And what I have here is a pretty typical 3d composite setup where I've rendered out multiple passes from cinema 4d. I've rendered them as a multipass EXR file. So I have one set of files here, one image sequence, and I've pulled that in and I've used the built-in extractor effect to pull out each pass from the EXR files. So I've got my lighting passes, like my diffuse pass, and I'll just solo them one at a time. So you can see what they look like. This is the diffuse lighting pass. This is the specular pass. This is the ambient pass reflection, global illumination. And now I get into my shadow passes. So I've actually got a shadow pass and I've got an ambient occlusion pass. And then up here, I haven't turned off. I've got an object buffer for the sky, the floor and the spikes.
Joey Korenman (01:53): So all of these are feeding from the same set of image sequences here, and I'm using this effect. It's in the 3d channel group extractor to pull each of those channels out one at a time. And I've set, I've already set up my, uh, my compositing. So, you know, diffuse is generally the channel I start with. That's my base. And then I'll add all of the lighting channels on top of it. Now I don't want to get too much into the actual compositing part of this, but it is very important to know that I'm in 32 bit mode and I'm actually compositing in a linear workspace. Uh, and the reason that I'm doing that is because EXR files out of cinema 4d are 32 bit. So I have tons and tons of color information, and that's wonderful. Um, so you can see here that this is my compositing setup and, you know, if I just pull all of my passes in and I set this up and I now look at it, all I'm seeing is a list of passes and I'm seeing layers, right?
Joey Korenman (02:51): Just these bars that go across. And if I really want to look at all of my passes and try to understand what I have to work with to, to help myself figure out how to composite these things, the only way to do it is to solo them one at a time. All right? And that's not really that intuitive of a way to composite. If you composite in after effects, you certainly get used to this, but let me show you a different way. So now we're going to hop into nuke. I'll show you what it looks like in nuke. So this is the nuke interface, and if you've never opened nuke, if you've never played with it, this is going to look a little bit alien to you. Um, it works very differently than after effects and I'll admit, I mean, it took me a while to get the hang of it.
Joey Korenman (03:32): But once I did, it is so much nicer to composite 3d passes together and really control the way your image looks in nuke. So the first thing you're probably noticing is I've got all of my passes, kind of laid out here in front of me, like cards on a table, right? And I don't have to sort of, you know, guess what the reflection pass looks like. I can actually see a little thumbnail of it, but the way nuke is set up, you have instant access to any single one of these little thumbnails at any time. Now these are called nodes. Nuke is a node based compositor. And the, one of the great things about nodes is you can look at any note at any time in nuke. If you hit the one key, you can see this little viewer here, this little doubt dotted line is going to jump to whatever I select and then hit one.

Finally, Now I understand what's the difference between the two, its not about the 2d and the 3d feature of each program but About the easier workflow, After effects is good for Text compositing or transition, While building a scene with a lot of CGI works best on NUKE, Thank you man.
Long time AE user, but first time Nuker here. This video explains the key differences very nicely, thanks. It's like a bridge across to another world ...a wonderful world of ... nodes.
I'm getting the nuke fever now :) Only reason I'm still not using it is the one-shot-at-a-time workflow and the lack of tools for motion graphic design. I like to keep things within one software if possible, also dynamic link is something I would miss a lot, since I'm usually working on very tight schedules with often lots of changes to be applied. However, you're the first person to spark that "Nuke temptation" in me. Really enjoying your tuts, looking forward to more!
Thanks for this tutorial just started taking a Nuke class at my university! Coming over from adobe after effects, having some good knowledge using Adobe creative cloud software I was unsure about what Nuke could offer that AE couldn’t, though seeing the node work flow that Nuke offers and the ease of use you have shown in this tutorial, it’s really opened my eyes to see just how useful this software can be! thanks again I’ve subscribed.
I like your voice and accent which are more easy to understand for me as an English beginner haha. And they are in a great tutorial. perfect!!!
Thank you for this tutorial. Was really excellent.
thankyou, for some reason i had it in my head that nuke was going to be harder to learn, but by the looks of it, its easier !

Great comparison. Thanks for the video
wow this is such a great explanation and you summarized it so effectively from the start, thanks so much!
this was awesome comparing, very precisely and professional, thanks a lot
Woww!!! That was what exactly I was looking for as comparison between these 2. Thanks man! really appreciate!
Very good video, taking a VFX course and wondered about the differences, whats better in each, and if I should start looking in to Nuke. Very good video, after this I will definatly start learning it!
Great video! And actually thanks for pointing out that nuke might not be ideal for animation.
Great work!! By the way have you noticed the small lock icon over the comps in AE which will allow you to see the final out when you make adjustments in the pre-comps. And you think too much to do a simple separations..Actually there are many easy way to do those works.
what an amazing tutorial..thank you so much for sharing with us...wish u all the luck! :D
Great tutorial man! Thank you!
Awesome tutorial! Yeah it totally makes sense for pure compositing work but when you need more than compositing the layer structure of AE might be preferable. In the last part i thought my headphone ear dropped dead :)
This was the last video I've watched and after watching this video, It's been 5 years and i haven't touched AE after this lol.
Thanks a lot, answered a lot of questions for me.
Its always a dream to learn this wonderful software but the moment I see those nodes I change my mind.....and after few months that same dream repeats:P
This is a great intro/peak into Nuke. Thanks! Would you suggest pluralsight for some basic compositing/tracking techniques in Nuke?
Thanks for this! Answered alot of questions. Do you use Nuke for particle generation too? How does it compare with say Stardust/Particular/Xparticles? Thanks!
There are infinite possibilities, I'm amazed!

Hi there. This was really helpful. I am so used to AE that I didn't see how Nuke was "better" or "faster" as everyone claimed it to be until I saw your video. This is the most helpful transition video I have seen. Thankyou. I wish you had more Nuke Compositing tutorials

This video is amazing! I used to use Fusion which introduced me to nodes but damn this is so insane! I love it. I kinda feel bad now for using ae :D
Really nice job. I did so stuff with MIDI/DAW/soft banks wayyy back in like 99/00 in college and was ok at it. I bought soft soft last
just beca a subscriber keep up the good work Sir.
I've used NUKE over 7 years. NUKE can work alone to handle all works, but the users require lots of knowledge of nodes and math. I always build new tools to make sure NUKE can figure out what the project needs. Reversely, you are pure motion graph artists. AE is the better choice. Lots of plugins and nice price.
Nice tutorial. One of the things that has always annoyed me in AE is how you can't view the changes to effects in real time if you're adjusting it within a precomp while viewing the final product. Makes it so you have to let go of sliders to see what they're doing, which ruins your history for Ctrl z.
Hello school of motion. The title is misleading. It isn't really a difference between both softwares, its more or less, advantages of nuke over after effects. I'm still watching the video and enjoying it. But I thought I should chip this in. Great video... So far

Really appreciate this, even tho you seem a bit heavy on the Nuke-fanboi-side. Many good points against AE, but also a lot of infomercial-y "OH DARN, DO YOU LOSE YOUR KEYS ALL THE TIME! HECK! IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU GOT YOURSELF THE BELTKEYHOLDER 2500! ORDER NOW AND GET THREE FREE BIKES AND THIS AWESOME CHEESEGRATER TOO!". It's not THAT hard to do some masking to separate effects :D Anyways, still very grateful for all the quality content School of Motion is giving away, thanks!

But wait! There's more! If you switch to Nuke today we'll also throw in a compositor 9000 at no additional cost! Thanks for the feedback. You're right, but if you do that kind of thing everyday you would probably benefit from using Nuke over AE. Cheers.
@toparak

He is Nuke fanboi or maybe Nuke is actually way better than AE for compositing and that's why every single VFX studio working on complex projects like movies and TV shows is using it?
The bigest difference between Nuke and AE is that in Nuke you know exactly what happens with each pixels of the image. Every math and every process is totally transparent: color space conversions, merge operations, sampling, etc. This requires more technical understanding from the user, but also offers nearly endless toolset to fix any issues that comes up in production.
Thanks!
Great tutorial thanks Nuke is very convincing
Amazing tutorial. You have an amazing style of explaining. What do you think about Fusion?
Great stuff! I am now a Nuke convert. AE is good for some things, but its workflow is outdated.

@maumau161
4 жыл бұрын
@@vooshmoozik6185 They won't do anything with After Effects. That's why they moved to the subscription model. They don't really have to provide new features. People have to pay anyway without Adobe having to do anything. A little feature here and there and that's it. As a business model it's brilliant. VEGAS Post won't change anything. From what I've seen, It's basically the Vegas + Hitfilm combo, which we've had for years. Blackmagic on the other hand with their Integration of Fusion into DaVinci Resolve and giving all that stuff away for FREE? That's what Adobe is afraid of. Resolve is already pulling a lot of people away from Adobe. Resolve is basically Premiere, Audition, Speedgrade and After Effects in one program with superior Color Grading and VFX and all that for FREE! And even the Studio version is just $300, which is INSANE and so far you got free major upgrades to the next versions once you bought it. Blackmagic are nuts! They are turning the post-production world on its head. And they are the only ones, that can and are actually threatening Adobe's empire.
This is why I created a fast course to switch from AE to Nuke
you understand it very well, you may want to step it up.
Coming from C4D/Redshft, This makes so much sense. Node based is the only way.
Nice video
But for this particular scene is overkill to use Nuke...It is easier to go from Cinema to After effects, also add a lot of particles, we have trapcode etc...so sometimes it is overkill.

i think i found a better description, hope you agree: after effects is an all-in-one app with basic comping capabilities while nuke is a dedicated compositor aimed at heavy duty 3d and full movie comping tasks. that's what i gather, but i personally think its just workflow differences and they are otherwise equal

Considering the price of Nuke I doubt I could afford to pirate it ... let alone buy it. I shall be sticking with AE on the Mac Pro custom and the same on the custom build, with 32GB of VRAM and 2 x 3.8GHz 8-core gets the job done beautifully. Though AE sadly lacks the capability to utilise all of the 128GB of RAM. :/
@ikbenikHD

I shouldn't pirate Nuke, why? Because three students of my academy did that and they got charged by the Foundry :') You've to set-up a virtual license server and even that's not waterproof. They have a special team for the hunt and mostly pick on wealthy countries

Is the nuke program lighter than after effect on the computer?
@rushitanpure
3 жыл бұрын
yes wayyy lighter, ae uses nearly to 4gb ram but nuke barely use 1 gb
21:08 The way you chose to do the glow, in After Effects is really wrong. It's even a lot simpler than NUKE, doesn't need COMP at all. What you need to do is create an adjustment layer above all your layers, then just throw on the adjustment layer, a glowing effect from the effects library, that's it.
@leaflent
4 жыл бұрын
You'll have very poor control with that method. The moment you wanted to make it glow more, you'll also accidentally glow up the stars and all the lighter elements of the entire scene. What he wanted to achieve is to put a glow control specifically to the crystals and what he did was the only way. I've been AE user for 10 years and I can understand it's limitations in the parts mentioned.

After Effects is much better for motion graphics/text effects, and that sort of work. Its direct pipeline to Premiere Pro can also be a timesaver when you just need quick compositing or transition effects added in to your edit. But for dedicated VFX compositing, or any sort of work in 3D space, Nuke takes it by a mile.

@@nathanbayne3576 For the most part, when you're talking about true 3D motion graphics, you wouldn't be creating those elements in AE or Nuke, but rather in a dedicated 3D program such as Houdini, Cinema4D, Maya, or whatever, then bringing those elements into your compositor to create the finished effect, which does play more to Nuke's strengths, in my opinion.
