Today we'll look at why After Effects' disk cache could be taking up a lot more disk space than you may realize on your hard drive. If you're strangely running low on disk space or haven't cleared your disk cache in a long time, now might be the time to check it out!

2 years later and you still saved me completely. Thank you so much amazing video. I suspected one of the adobe softwares to have filled my C drive, but wasnt sure which or where they stored all the useless cache files etc.

Yes This is very important to be aware of if using AE! Especially the part about previous versions, that was news to me. because it is simply ridiculous how fast it fills up! even tho i have a dedicated m.2 ssd for cache it's an issue, so i can't imagine working from a laptop. I'm happy adobe is actually putting in some effort to speed up AE as it's sooo ridiculously slow. I'm not a programmer, so I'm not sure about the details and reasons that are probably very complicated. But I find it so suspicious that this so called program can't even play back a normal compressed video file in real time like any other editing software or media player can, before you add any effects. So what ever this so called media cache is doing it doesn't seem to be working, and you still need to wait for the green line indicating it's loaded to RAM before the sound stops skipping and slowing ensuring that what you see is the actual speed. And this is very important when you are working with motion and need to see how things flow. Saying that it depends on how complicated the composition is and intensive the effects is just misleading. almost no matter how small a task i'm doing, like just some minor adjustments to a 10 sec clip for Instagram, and AE has managed to write over 100 gb of cache. so seems like it's saving every preview of every step you do as uncompressed video which obviously ads up very fast. might be helpful when you go back with ctrl z a couple of times and it's still available, but as you say this is KILLING your hard drive space and might slow down you're computer a lot if you don't have multiple drives. And even kill your SSD much faster as they have limited writing times. which again sucks bigtime, if you have a laptop with just one drive for the OS and everything. Ok, rant over.. for now :P

not only killing space, actually killing the drive at the same time, shortening it's lifespan and durabiltiy by writing over and over each time you render a single frame. with memory swap it uses drive as RAM as well, writing and deleting both cache and ram. ssd drives can wear out and fail sooner. since they're not replaceable in macs. but it's easy to attach an external high speed type c but low capacity cheap ssd to allocate as a dedicated cache for after effects for the drive space and drive health, (plus don't get 8GB of ram)

To add, on macOS I used to observe an odd behavior that export can get slower to a halt over time for scene containing as simple as just a spectrum display. When I observed the I/O usage in system Activity Monitor, AE Render Core was writing to the disk cache like crazy, which i don't expect it to do for just doing an export via Media Encoder. I have since disabled the disk cache and my export speed for very lightweight scene is 3x the normal playback speed, before disabling it was a bit less than 1X on average.

afer effects sucks. I have to clear my cache everytime I open after effects to work on the same project.. then I have to quit. and then restart the AE again then I can see a preview... then later I quit when I am done working... then when I restart the same project I get an error that I need 2 frames for preview...and I cant see the preview... then I have to delete the cache quit the program and restart the program then I can start saving a cache again.. I HATE AFTER EFFECTS...2022..same bs problems because ADOBE IS TOO LAZY TO RE CODE THE SOFTWARE WITH MODERN CODE!!!

One of main reasons why I switched to Fusion. While fusion can do all the stuff as After Effects including cache management and all that, with Fusion cache can only be done on GPU and deletes itself as it works on a timeline. Basically no hard drive space used unless you want it. In After Effects to preview a freaking video file it fills up to 3GB in few minutes. its absolute madness. In Fusions I can work for a week and no cache folders unless I want to use one. Adobe really needs to do something about AF and crazy cache system it has. Its bonkers.
