African Nightcrawlers - Harvesting Large Worms 03/01/2022

I need some of these worms to start a new time lapse video so I'm doing a large worm harvest. These bins will continue but we will see if they can repopulate the systems with just the worms/cocoons that are left.

My husband and I watched your sifter video quite a few times. We came up with one from your idea and mixing up our own ideas🤩

That is awesome! Make sure you make a video of it if you haven't yet! I actually have made a couple upgrades to help hold it down. Hard to use it when it is sort of loud and everyone is home!

I was hoping to grow my ANC population and it looks like it is working!

ANCs break off their tail when they get bothered by something. It’s like a protective mechanism.

Good to know! I've seen a few that seemed to have two tails I wonder what caused that but I'm not seeing it that often.

Looking back at some historical videos Noel.. just wondering if you heating mat is a bit too ‘fierce’ for your systems? I’m not sure what heating mats you have but do they have a timer or thermostat controls? Seems to me that’s definitely the issue regards a ‘dry bin’.. enjoyed watching you sifting the bins and the last one had enough worms to keep you happy in the end. I am very new at this ‘game’ already love having my own ‘worm community’… learning everyday about improving things etc. Already planning my nursery bins but it’s early days my main concern is that 1. My worms are alive. 2. They are not escaping 3. Moisture 4. Bedding. 5. food. 6. Predators (they are in my garage) 7. Temperature/climate issues..looking forwards to following your journey…

Not sure if I replied to this in a on another comment but the mat does have a thermostat I added as it was running way to hot. But I think the probe can move up in the bin causing it to be further from the bottom and signaling the mat to stay on longer and longer. I'll have to devise a better system next winter and also make sure I check on the bins more often. Vacations and kids sometimes get in the way of making and keeping up with all the systems I have going.

Why are you telling people that pre-moistened bedding will cause mold and problems around the house. You are spreading bad information. If you want to learn how I can tell you and you could do a video. Don’t put out wrong information.

I think you misunderstand I don't pre-moisten bedding because I don't know how much I will use and I don't want to leave wet bedding which is typically cardboard as that can grow mold. Also I have no idea on the moisture inside a system and if the bedding should be dry to absorb water. Typically during the cool/cold months this isn't the case but I've also been surprised before.

@@WorldComposting pre-moistened bedding prepared correctly and inoculated with castings stores for months. It’s moist. Not wet but like perfect bedding worms love. Pre-moistened it still has an incredible capacity to absorb and is pre-inoculated with life the worms go crazy for. A large batch of this may take two minutes of time per week to maintain.

@@WorldComposting here is an example. It’s not the only way. You can tailor it to your own way. The key is moist not wet. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dmSlycaQf9OTk8Y.html
