    As a white Australian, when I look at you, I can't really tell east African from other parts of Africa, so I can't really judge that angle of it. I mainly see a woman mostly of African ancestry with a smaller element of European as well. Be proud of all your segments:- they've made you very attractive!

    African Americans are a heavily admixed ethnic group being a combination of various African, Western Eurasian(European), and Indigenous American populations. East Africans particularly the ones of Cushitic and Semitic ethnicities are heavy admixed group being a combination of various African and Western Eurasian(Arab, Persian, Hebrew) ethnicities. So African Americans and East Africans can sometimes have very similiar phenotypic appearances even though genetically they're fairly distantly related. Same reason why Latinos and Arabs can look very similar in appearance. Generations of intermixing of populations typically produces an ethnically ambiguous look.

New York City was diverse but not that integrated every ethnicity lived in their own ghettos. The world is much changed and better. So far 60 million people haven’t died in global wars in this century yet. Even though there are 7 billion more people. The ethnicity results are cool but the best thing to rely on is the DNA matches you share along with the ethnicities. Why? Because if you see distant relatives or DNA matches for an ethnicity more than likely you have an ancestor from that region. So keep an eye out for the matches as well.

    Somehow I've never fully considered this & I've been into dna & genealogy for many years. That is definitely possible, but I guess it's also worth considering that native ancestry in White Americans is quite rare. I imagine since the native ancestry in the average AA is so small, it is distant ancestry that occurred a while ago between Natives and Africans/early enslaved AA. There are some remains that have been tested from two different gravesites which I'm aware of, South Carolina & Georgia dated 1700-1800s, both groups had individuals with Native ancestry. but yeah, your statement is def possible.

    I have two (2) Native American ancestors but it shows up as only 1% of my DNA. And for some of my relatives it's already zero. You see, it's from quite a few generations ago (in the 1700s). With each successive generation our allocations get cut in half (on average) as new DNA sort of pushes out and replaces the older stuff.

  • @mattpotter8725

    @mattpotter8725

    8 ай бұрын

    It doesn't really push out older DNA, it's just that you get 50% from each parent and as you get more distant from say a Native American or even a European ancestor if only one parent has that DNA you only get 50% of it, then 25% (on average) the generation down from that, then 12.5% (and so on and so forth), and as communities in countries like the US intermarry and have children it's basically a lottery as to which parts of their DNA you get, . Even siblings can have quite varied ethnicity results. So nothing is being pushed out, it's just the way biology and DNA works. It'd be pretty weird if you didn't get 50% from your mum and 50% from your dad.

    Just watched your update video, have only just found your channel so maybe you have mentioned it in other videos on other topics you cover on your channel, but I'm a little sad that you didn't really go into what you expected, what you're background is (without giving too much away, of course). 18% European is almost at one full grandparent, but I know what happened during slavery and maybe this is split evenly across your ancestors, with 4-5% coming from each branch (it didn't sound as though you have any knowledge where this might be coming from). The Ethnicity Estimates are all well and good, and are fun to see, but building a family tree, looking at the matches you have and where they are located can really give you a better insight into where your ancestors came from. Of course sometimes the records don't exist as far back as you want, sometimes details didn't get recorded further back than a certain date, but it's a fun exercise, and I'm sure you could build a quick tree and find some cool stuff out for free (even if it's just for you and your family, not for sharing with us).

    Take your DNA results with a grain of salt. They are based on a group of people who say they're from the communities that they're from, but they themselves may not be 100% biologically from that community. And all of your numbers will change as they get more samples to compare against. For example, I took an AncestryDNA test over 5 years ago. Since then, they have reported that I was 5% Italian, but then the numbers were revised, and that went away. Then it reported that I was 4% Baltic States, but then the numbers were revised again, and that went away too. I also had a 23andMe test and over the years, my African percent has gone down from 19% to 17%. However, at the same time on AncestryDNA, my African percentage has gone up from 17% to 20%. Essentially, the two tests switched! Also, all my other numbers have changed as time goes on; that is every single ethnicity number has changed by some percentage. Nothing stays the same from one year to the next. Another problem, both my father and my paternal grandfather took AncestryDNA tests as well and though AncestryDNA does recognize that we have the strongest relationship (parent/child & grandparent/grandchild), my father is 26% from Scotland but I have 0%. So that doesn't make sense. My mother is 100% German and my father is 13% German, but somehow I'm only 39% German. Additionally, the test says I'm 23% English, but neither of my parents have that ancestry. When I compare all the African regions from my grandfather's, my father's and my tests, none of them line up with each other, though most are West African for all 3 of us. The numbers don't add up and they're always changing and sometimes simply don't make sense. The one thing that AncestryDNA does get right that I see it in my own results, is showing the communities you belong without showing a percentage. Those are the subgroups. So under my African heritage, it says Afro-Bahaman which I have traced to be true, and it also shows Early Southern United States African Americans which also rings true from my grandfather's family background, as well as Southern Louisiana French Settlers and Louisiana African Americans, which I know come from my paternal grandmother. For all these communities, AncestryDNA doesn't show any percentages, just that it detected it, and from my own family research, this is true. So take all of your results with a grain of salt. Use it as a guidepost rather than a fact. And at this point, with investigating my African ancestry, what's more interesting that what AncestryDNA says is what is currently going on in the research communities, how most Africans are related to each other through the Bantu expansion out of West Africa and how their are deeper lineage divergences in African than the rest of the non-African world, while at the same time their is long standing intermixing between various African groups throughout time. The African picture is far more complex than the non-African picture.

    @@olgakipke3720 You're just talking about the 23rd chromosome pair which is XY for men and XX for women. The Y in men is inherited from father to son while the X chromosome is inherited from both mother and father and is not very useful for determining ancestry. However, since the Y is father to son and only mutates every 2 or 3 thousand years, it's very useful for tracking male haprogroups, which is not to the same as ancestry. For mother to daughter (and son), their haplogroups are tracked via the mitochondrial DNA, another part of the nucleus that is the powerhouse of the cell, which like the Y-DNA also only mutates once every 2 to 3 thousand years and is very useful in tracking female haplogroups. However, those are only good for tracing paternal and maternal lines but you cannot track all the other ancestors that contribute to your background, your mother's father's mother's father's, etc. That is why DNA testing companies use Autosomal DNA, that is the other 22 pairs of DNA in your DNA strand because those DNA are spliced in segments between your 2 parents, usually on a 49% to 51% basis randomly. In addition, you inherit their inheritance from their parents (your grandparents) and so on and so forth. There is a limit though. We inherit 100% of our ancestors going back at least 7 generations. However, because of "segmentation deletion", starting around 10 generations back, the inheritance drops to 97% of your ancestors. One thing to make clear though is that there is no such DNA that is "Scottish". Somebody who a DNA test says is "Scottish" is related to somebody or several people in the testing company's library who claims to be 100% Scottish and you share some inheritance with that them. So your background may be Scottish, but if you're not related specifically to their control subject, then you don't show up as "Scottish". So their methodology is not an exact science.

    Thx 4 sharing. Simple way to comprehend results. Look at parents like slot machines. Pull the lever you get 2 pears 1 grape. 1st child....Pull lever again for second child you get 1 orange 1 apple 1 pear. Thats a shuffling of DNA. Just because you dont see something doesn't mean you dont have. This is why siblings results will be different unless identical twins. Also after each generation DNA numbers can become less. My mom and I have Native American DNA and my son doesn't show any. Does that mean he doesnt have Native American ancestry? He does

    The DNA from Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Island probably came from the same person. The Scandinavians (Sweden, Norway, Island) invaded the British isles (Ireland, Scotland) in the middle ages, and millions of Irish people emigrated to the US in the 1800s. Looks like one of them had a fling with one of all your ancestors of African descent. Probanly during the late 1800s or so, considering the percentage.

    I did a DNA test with my My True Ancestry an the Europeans that came to America in 550AD from Germany surprisely wasnt completely Caucasian. The DNA showed 4 different groups from Germany, Egyptians and Moors were two of them. It also shows Africans came to America in 1900BC that's over 3900 years ago. More than half of my DNA is different Native tribes that came in 150AD called Ameridians. I made a video as well but your 1% is what's left of the Q haplogroup. It you take a MtDNA which traces from mother to mother you'll definitely see your technically half Native American. These Popular DNA test are being used differently than a MtDNA or Y DNA test. These Popular DNA test are not telling the full story. It's only showing the DNA from less than 500 years ago and My True Ancestry goes back 10000 years up until 1800s. This will show were Black people in America are truly from and been before slavery . We were enslaved in 1810 Catoctin Antebellum Maryland according to My true Ancestry DNA. The country was underseige by Europeans that killed majority of the Native Black African Asiatic Americans known as Indians.
