This is my country, is where I'm from. I'm very proud of our long lasting tradition & culture which we preserve even after colonialism. I live in England and I do my best to teach my children my traditional tribe practice because is fundamental for them to know their origin and backgrounds. respect to my African ancestral and lots of love to my African people wherever you live or born. Respect.

Hi I love your culture.I was born in Zimbabwe ( Male culture).I would love to live and get iniationed in your culture. How should I do that.And do I find out if I have an Ancestors in this bissau island

They are not a spectator attraction, how crazy is it to have people going to visit like they are visiting an exhibit. What if they took a tour of your neighbourhood with a guide taking pictures of your kids, your house, how you live, following you to work and everything you do? There is nothing wrong with sharing world culture, but it should not be exploitive.

You're wrong about 'can never go to their countries.' You need a visa to go on holiday to the EU. But its exactly the same for someone from the EU to Guinea-Bissau. We also need to apply for a visa. Hi Nita. I don't get it... why did it bother you? It said in the documentary that palm oil was their biggest export. So thats what they'll be known for to tourists. Seems like a pretty major reason why a tourist would be asking to see it. Its strange though... if you're assuming the tourists had some negative intent, I'd question why you think that? Are you assuming something based on the colour of the tourists' skin? Your 'these people' comment seems derrogatory. You might want to go for some diversity training, get your hate out? When you say 'these people,' you're lumping entire races in all together. Sure its probably a bit weird to the locals, when the tourists are asking to see things that they associate with Bissago, like palm collection or dancing. But you have to understand the nature of tourism. Tourists are super keen to see the things a place is known for, and because they're outsiders they often don't understand context (like asking at the wrong time, or asking the wrong person,) but its OK. All tourists, in any country, and from any country, do that. It would be like if you asked me randomly if I could make you a super complex electronic gadget, simply because white people are known for inventing all modern technology. I'd be like 'whoa hang on, you can't just assume I'm super intelligent. I'm just a random person.' But I wouldn't HATE you for it. You've got to learn to get along with people of ALL races, not just your own, Nita.

Couple hundreds years ago the European Setller put their feet into this pretty land and until now it is still happpy but the economic left behind by them and existing and exploiting systematic linear economic put there by them is still hurting every aspect of the development of this great nation. One thing everyone should remember Africa is a place where Happiness is existing even with poverty still dominating. We African are proud of everything natural that God has given and we will never be ashamed of anything we have.

I have to check this out on my next visit to Senegal. I was in the Façados Islands, in the Bight of Benin, southern Nigeria-Cameroon it has been decimated with oil spills by Shell and Exxon-mobil oil companies. These companies have committed serious atrocities to the ecology of that once pristine mangrove forest. Sinful

I enjoy video like this because these people still do things the old way....... That is the best way and the best food.

These people are happier than the visitors who came to exploit them.

Funny you should say that . I have a link in Ghana. I called him on video he was teaching at a school. When he turned the phone to the school kids you should have seen the way they said hello. My wife said she has never seen school kids that happy ever!!! in her life. and you should have seen the school. Tin roof no windows all dressed neatly in their school uniform.

They live a very dignified simple life and have something that we don't; that is real happiness.But Westerners continue to confuse a simple life with civilization and happiness. Fruits of advancement and development should reach these people, it's the duty of all of fortunate ones. Nobody likes to move in a torn shirt ( if at all its there) and pants. It's their helplessness.

These people may have different customs than other tribes but, all in all I think most people were a lot like these tribe. Look at Hawaii before and after WWII and the conquest by the Dole family. Look what they have done to these people. They have to fight off the chemical companies now who are contaminating the very soils, and air right next door to where the indigenous people dwell (away) from the White City.

Four years later, wonder if the Bissagos are still protected. If they get hospitals and schools across the chain, then everything else will follow. Plastic bottles, plastic toys, etc and welcome to the cesspool of impossible recycling efforts.

I think it largely is. The documentary was touting it as 'unspoiled.' But Fran, I totally agree with you. I mean, European, American, Chinese, African, etc, influences are spoiling tourist areas all over the world. I mean, look at Europe. Its not really European any more. I don't have a problem with it per se, because I'm not racist and I believe in diversity. But it does kinda spoil it for the tourists, who are expecting an 'authentic' experience. I suppose it would be strange for an African coming to the UK, only to discover London isn't majority white, and that even the white people there consider curry the 'national dish.' So if you're a tourist, I do see where you're coming from, when you hope Europe is carefree of African influence, or that Africa is carefree and free of Chinese influence, or anywhere free of any influence.

I love the simplicity of thire lifes,how natural the skills are in thire environment. From the food that eat to the huts, it's really like stepping in to a time machine to ware we all came from.

She is a great worker who is nursing the kid, the kid is so happy he doesn't have any pain at all it was a simple wound. Their immune system is so strong. Overall no bills to pay. If I hit the jackpot I will make a medical hospital and school. I love those people no monetary transaction, real nature.

Ollie Bommel, exactly. Africans don't go into your villages in Europe to film the people. Live and let live. To each his own. Different people different culture. Others have right to their lifestyles too, don't look at people by your own standard. Respect them as they respect you. They are this way confused now because whites came to forcefully instil their cultures in them. Now they are half this half that and economic drained by Portuguese too have left its impact on the people. I just hope one day Europeans will get it right to leave Africans alone

These people are unique. Intelligent, not stupid, except for the " spiritual " beliefs. Actually they are quite smart. A fine example of successful evolution.

They have living like that for millions of years... they are happy. If they aren't happy I am sure, they would do something about it. No need for outsiders to march into their environment impose, their way of living on them. There is less heart attacks, strokes, obesity etc, all the diseases associated with stress. Living simple life is good!

Hi Silver. You're being a bit racist, don't you think? Yeah, they live on islands, but Christ almighty its the 21st century. Please stop acting like the islanders are so insular and naive and they're only just being discovered like its the 16th Century and they live in some 'lost world.' These islanders and their immune systems have had contact with outsiders for 1000s of years. There are no diseases that Europeans carry that would be super dangerous to them.

They have been coming to the islands for 30 years. The locals are known to protect those islands. If anyone comes with nonsense, you will be kicked out.

Why are most African Documentaries about poor or isolated parts of the Continent. Rarely showing the successful and prosperous locations.

What I saw was a beautiful archipelago of islands with a relatively intact culture that largely sets its own rules on who comes and goes and who stays and who doesn't. Yet, the comments section is full of virulence and unhappiness. Yes, tourism handled poorly can do both the people and the islands themselves a great disservice. Yet, what I saw was an effort to be careful about tourism so it doesn't cause harm. These islands are not on another planet, but within a nation that was colonized by the Portuguese for centuries and finally gave them the shove just 45 years ago. It is not as if Europeans have never had interaction with the locals. Yes, I think the tourists need to be trained not to make silly requests that could cause harm to the status of a local, but that is true everywhere. I once forgot to remove my cap when I offered a monk's elephant a pineapple top in Cambodia. I felt bad, learned from the experience and didn't make the same mistake twice. People can learn from their experience and even tourists can learn to not ask for dancing or tree climbing for photo ops. The ship provides some employment where jobs are scarce for the crew and suppliers, and benefit to the islanders, especially in terms of medical help, the locals seem to have the choice to allow the tourists to come to their islands or not. It is choice that makes such an exchange OK in my book.

Please stop the hate speech. Here in Europe, you can be arrested for this sort of hate speech. Assuming that something inherrently bad will happen because 'the outsiders are coming' is the most small minded talk possible. You need to get out more. Leave whatever tiny village you're living in. Embrace diversity, and stop assuming 'outsider bad.' What the hell harm will tourists do? Sure, it could ruin the native cultural authenticity if there are too many tourists, but if the islanders decide to limit numbers (and it is up to them!) then it would be super good for them, leading to increased wealth and development. But if the effect is going to be bad, what difference would it make whether the tourists were wealthier Africans, or people from any other continent? Why specially pick on non African tourists for your hate? Are you a racial supremacist?
