This type of hybrid is kinda what I been waiting for... the rest have been at best for performance, where this thing has true range. Just refill the tank, go another 600 miles! Locomotives use this style of drivetrain (roughly) where an ICE engine generates electricity to power torquey electric motors.

Proof that you present these cars better than anyone else. I must have watched half a dozen reviews of the new Accord before this one, and not until *you* explained everything did I realize what the whole propulsion system was about. All I did before this was complain about the loss of the 2.0T. Now I'm actually very interested in this as a daily driver. Also, you're not old! My Game Boy was a Coleco Football handheld game. 🤯

This is an interesting take on a hybrid. I like the idea of the engine being mostly decoupled from the propulsion and being used primarily for power generation. (Cruise ships do the same thing.) It also means the electric bits are useful even if the engine is not. Could mean the difference of limping to a shop, versus waiting 3 hours for a tow truck. I like it a lot, and might actually own one of these someday. Thanks for showing it off, Sarah! 👍

This is also how most modern train locomotives work. The diesel engine is there to generate power for the traction motors and onboard electronics. This makes emissions much easier to control since the engine really only needs to run at one RPM for which you can optimize all the emissions reduction systems. This also makes it so that the train can be converted to electric by adding a pantograph (collector pole).

  • @McTroyd

@@BryceNewall It's a Honda; I would expect nothing less than excellence. I've just been a bit of a downer on the subject of hybrids. Always felt they were a bit of a hack while we worked out EVs, especially since the electric side wasn't usable if the main engine goes down. Honda seems to have specifically addressed that consideration, which might be enough to change my mind when I'm next in the market.

@Gary I was disappointed in their choice to remove the 2.0T engine. I was also dismayed when they discontinued the 6-speed manual transmission option in 2021. I can understand why, as it only accounted for a small percentage of sales, but I was still disappointed. (Perhaps part of the reason for discontinuing the manual was also so they could incorporate engine start/stop technology. But I would think you could incorporate that with a manual as well.) They're trying to steer people towards the hybrid models by only offering the higher-end trims, like the Sport and Touring, in hybrid. With everyone buying trucks, SUVs, and crossovers these days, it's probably hard for them to justify producing so many different trims of a 4-door sedan. Don't let the HP number fool you, though... torque is the more important figure, and with 247 ft-lbs, it out-performs the regular 1.5T (192 HP/192 ft-lb), although it would be smoked by the 2.0T (252 HP/272 ft-lb).

Hi Sarah! Thanks for another great review. :) I own a 2022 Accord EX-L hybrid myself and I love it. You mentioned no ventilation or charging in the back... Those don't come on the Sport or Sport-L; you have to step up to an EX-L or Touring to get those. Touring also gives you ventilated front seats, and a few other goodies. Mileage-wise, the EX-L will give you about 5 MPG better due to having smaller 17" wheels. For 2023, Honda took some features away from the EX-L and made them only available on the Touring (Boooooo!), such as wireless Qi charging, HD Radio, and a better sound system with subwoofer. The drivetrain on my 2022 is pretty much the same as the 2023, except that it has 8 more HP but 15 fewer ft-lbs of torque. I came from a 2018 Accord Sport 2.0T with the 6-speed manual. When I was going for a hybrid, it was down to a Camry or Accord, and I went with an Accord because I was familiar with it and knew I'd like it. :) And I'm not sorry! It's also interesting that for 2023, they changed the shifter back to the same physical shifter you get in the non-hybrid LX and EX trims with the 1.5T engine. From 2018-2022, the 2.0T with the 10AT had a push-button gear selector, as did the hybrids.

Excellent review. I’m in market replace my 2015 Civic. This Accord is perfect for my daily commute of 20K miles per year. Over 600 miles on a tank of gas… bonus. Thank you Sarah.

Your butter through the air joke was funny. It was kind of like it was given Red Bull at the end, because you gave it wings. Haha

This Mercruiser isn't exciting but gets on plane quickly and floats along without protest. But what the heck is going on down there? Is this the first powerplant to convert MPG to MPGe in real time? Superb review, Sarah. So entertaining, loved it!

I don't think I have ever seen an electromechanical drivetrain in a car. Looks like it's pretty much like a diesel electric locomotive. As Spock would say, fascinating! Thanks for the details Sarah 👌
