Affirm Relaxer Tutorial

The Affirm Conditioning Relaxer process. Affirm Relaxer retains up to 81% of the original fiber elasticity for stronger hair. In the video, I discuss why I like Affirm Relaxer, and recommend it to clients? I also show how I apply relaxer to the hair, not the scalp, which prevents burning during the relaxer application. I do not recommend relaxing your own hair at home. Always go to a licensed cosmetologist for relaxer services. For more information on Affirm Relaxers, go to avlon.com/affirm-products

    Love affirm! I used affirm FiberGuard when I use to relax my own 4c hair (sick of getting burnt in the salon) and was the only time my hair actually grew. Was still nice and thick plus every time I was washing out the relaxer I had literally no breakage. If I do it again, affirm it is :) worth it

    Hello Sophia. Thanks for posting this! I am thinking of doing my own relaxer due to COVID. My stylist always used Affirm Dry/Itchy Scalp My hair type is 4C Haven't had a relaxer in 3 yrs. Attempting to buy everything online. The Wal-mart site has a box of 9 applications and an activator (to stir in) looks like the other items would have to be bought separately? Is there a version that does not require the activator (didn't see that part in your video) Also, do the products listed above have special sensitive/dry/itchy formulas? Is there a site that sells the full kit without having to buy alacarte? Is the 'Positive Link' product on the Avlon website necessary? Signed, In Desperate Need of Your Help!

I have been natural for the last 9 years, but have always worn my hair under braids, wigs, or clip in extensions. My natural type 4 hair is so difficult to work with that i just have to get a relaxer! The stylist I am going to is using affirm relaxer as well! I currently have braids, and will remove them Thursday do you think It’s safe to have a relaxer so soon?

    Hello. Thank you for the compliment. I always recommend waiting a week to relax you mr hair after taking down braids. Be sure to base your scalp with Vaseline or an oil like jojoba oil the night before just to have a slight barrier on your scalp. Also the stylist will most likely base your scalp the day of as well. I hope this helps you and good luck. All the best and thanks for the question.

    I’m sorry I must have over looked the question. Definitely, it depends on the type of color you have, if your hair is bleached it is not recommended to use no lye relaxers. If you have permanent color the no lye would be more appropriate or fiber gaurd can be used. The stylist must not get the relaxer on the scalp to help avoid burning.

    Hello Sophia? How are you? I had stopped relaxing my hair since 2012. I've cut off the old relaxed hair and started going natural. In doing so, I was wearing either braids or wigs until my hair got to shoulder length. Anyway, I started doing a silk press (using my electric pressing comb, flat iron, and marcel curling iron). Natural hair is a lot of work. I'm just about ready to go back to relaxing it. I watched your video and you are very professional. I currently have color treated hair as well. I also have sensitive scalp and in the past, I easily burned. I am interested in using the Affirm relaxer system. Since my hair is color treated and scalp is sensitive, which type of Affirm Relaxer should I start with?

  • @sophiaknowshair

    @sophiaknowshair

    Hello. Thank you so much for the compliments. If you have a permanent hair color you have to be extremely careful with relaxing your hair. There are several factors to consider. Is your hair strong enough to have both chemicals? Do you have dye in your hair or did you use lightener? Affirm Fiber Gaurd is a good relaxer to start with. I don't recommend you relax your own hair. Mizani Fiber Gaurd or Affrim Fiber Gaurd is a good place to start. Also consulting with a cosmetologist that does relaxer on color-treated hair. There are other ways to have manageable hair without a relaxer. Such as using a smoothing treatment like Affirm Texture Release or SilkOut Taming Treatment. You can look these up as alternatives to softening your natural without irritating your scalp or causing hair breakage. Hope this helps.

    Hello. The fiber guard is more gentle and designed for color treated hair. I use it for clients who need more of a gentle relaxer even though they may or may not have a relaxer. The classic relaxer is definitely stronger and gets the hair straighter so you have to know what density hair you have in order to choose the right relaxer.

The Affirm Relaxer instructs us to condition after the relaxer and then neutralize. It will not harm your hair if she neutralizes the hair first, but you may not get the best reconditioning of your hair if it is neutralized first. It is best to follow the manufacture directions to achieve the best end result. Let me know of you have more questions and sorry I was so late in replying.

So if I can't apply in under 8 minutes my hair will most likely be straight? Maybe this is not the best product for a texlax? If possible could you recommend a texlax product I would appreciate it! Also when I was relaxed my hair grew very fast and it would snap at the crown so I think the longest I could go without a relaxer was 6 weeks. Would you recommend to wait the 8 weeks anyways?

    Greisy Espinosa Hello. It depends on your hair texture and also the outcome you want. You can try the normal affirm relaxer this time and see if it makes the hair straight enough. Some times fine hair can still have a tight curl. So the normal strength should be fine. If it seems like the normal was to straight, then the second relaxer you can just use mild. You have to use trial and error. I can't see your hair so I can not comment on the relaxer strength you should use. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for commenting.

  • @sophiaknowshair

    @sophiaknowshair

    I usually do not comb the relaxer through even with a virgin relaxer. I use my fingers to work the relaxer through the hair with virgin or retouch applications. Because I was correcting her relaxer I just applied it where it was needed and massaged it with my fingers. You can use a reconstructor like the 5n1 Reconstructor after a relaxer or any reconstructor that has proteins in it that is creamy like Affirm Fiber Gaurd Sustenance Fortifying Treatment. I would not use a protein treatment like Aphogee after a relaxer, it will make the hair to hard and dry after a relaxer service. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question and watching the video.

    No no no. Never comb through a relaxer from new growth to ends. Only if you are doing a virgin relaxer. In the video, I was correcting her relaxer and I put the relaxer on areas where her hair was under processed and then smoothed it through. Also, rather than using a comb a sprush works better than a comb because you are not damaging the hair by combing the relaxer in with the fine teeth. Just a suggestion. blusand.com/collections/sprush-applicators/products/acqua-sprush-hair-color-applicator

    I use mizani relaxers and products, I always use the same protein treatment before neutraliser and a conditioner after it. I never miss out conditioner, Way back when I went to a stylist they never used affirm on my head they said it was for sensitive scalp!whixhbot was for me back then. One thing I've discovered since I stopped putting oil on my scalp about 10 years ago (which is an irritant to the pores) I only use oils etc on the hair I don't burn anymore I've used several brand of relaxers not burned once, I will base my scalp for the relaxer only. My scalp don't even itch nor does it have dandruff of dry scalp, I wash it 1 or 2 times per week.

    Ok. I understand. You should try using Olaplex. You can ask your stylist for the in salon treatment or buy the Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector. It helps to strengthen the hair by multiplying the bonds broken during chemical services. It is not like a protein treatment because they tend to harden the hair temporarily by coating the hair shaft, olaplex works on the bonds that break. When the bonds break, they leave your hair in a weaker state after chemical services, if you use the Olaplex you will notice less breakage, more strength. Try it either once a month or every 2 weeks.
