Agree, I feel like they nailed the base system (Except I would love alternative systems for breaking pins and submissions, like a timing based one or something), it really just needs more content, in almost every area. But that is easily solved with updates and DLC.

I think the issue with alot of the storylines is that they simulte months at a time since each Dynamite is attached to a PPV of which there's only 4. So the stotylines are probably mostly simulated in the background. That and it also doesn't help they skip an entire year and a half by skimming past the Pandemic Era with only one week in Jacksonville being the representative of the "Pandemic era"

In regards to pins I’m 100% with you. Button mashing definitely ain’t it anymore. Personally think the mini system for submissions and pins in 2k19 was perfect and should be the standard for wrestling titles.

Dude you are really being generous... It took them FOUR YEARS to make this game! This game is underwhelming to say the least, and this is coming from someone who has been playing wrestling games since 1992. If this game was made by an up and coming company, i would give it a pass, but this is seriously unacceptable for a game that was in development for 4 years just to have a bare bone game

Gameplay is FANTASTIC. If they add content with updates, it'll keep this game booming for years.

I agree with everything you said about the pin system, the tables, reversals being near impossible when on low momentum, and the reversal indicators, them adding/fixing these things would instantly make the game way better. They also need to make it so you don't get damaged so quick, after a minute or 2 me or the CPU is already on red health, and the last 2 things they should fix gameplay wise is the running, it takes so long for it to start, you can't stop it really, and why do we have only 1 direction running in 2023? That hasn't been a thing since SVR 07, and the last thing is that the movement needs to be faster, so slow especially when you set up a table and it takes forever to go the other side

Biggest thing to remember is yes while the game currently is lacking in some departments . At the front of it all first and foremost . The gameplay is EXCELLENT once you get a grasp of it .

i doubt there will be a significant price drop. The game is designed to be a live model, meaning they will be adding content throughout the lifetime of the game and it isn't going to be like the 2k games with a new one every year. So maybe wait till more modes and better creation stuff is added. I was bummed as well. Creation suite is the best part of wrestling games. in 2k, i've always made like 50 CAWs and then started my own CAW show.

Im not even an AEW guy I’ve been diehard WWE since 1995. I bought this game simply because I’m tired of 2k games. This game is flat out loads of fun. If they improve its quality of life with small tweaks and additional modes and wrestlers were in for a really good time.

No reversal icon and button mashing is wild to me.

Can we talk about how this game is also stupidly priced for what it offers. That's gonna hurt sales and they should've opted for a cheaper option

Bro, you nailed this review! The funny thing is, though. They tried to recreate No Mercy, but it's a lesser game. It actually would've been better if they copied No Mercy 100% because no mercy had created a PPV mode. Among other things.

The gameplay was good it reminded me more of Day of Reckoning than WWF No Mercy. The graphics were pretty up to par with the style they were aiming for the game. I loved the stacked roster.

Did you pick up a different game to the rest of us? It's got a stacked entrance music and entrance motion roster. Just doesnt have any of the wrestlers to go with it or the ability to create any of those missing wrestlers.

Hopefully this doesn't end up like the tna game as just a one off, it would be nice to see them build on this and develop a true alternative to the 2k games. I'm hesitant to buy in now but maybe in time I'll give it a go. Appreciate the rewrite and keep the good work, you've been killing it recently. #pavfightforever

Hey you gotta remember that most starting games are experimental. Hopefully an update or a sequel can iron out the wrinkles but hey it's not an unfinished mess and it's fun to play. Plus it's being talked about which will really help. Also the TNA game didn't go anywhere because afterwards TNA started going into the toilet, but hey at least the engine was polished up and used one more time for WWE All Stars.

They do plan on adding that stuff through season passes and DLC though. So hopefully this game does get fleshed out.

#PavFightForever This was a really well in-depth review. Seeing the gameplay looks superfun, but all the things shown on its flaws make it feel like a tech-demo at best. But glad to see the developers look like they care and wanting to improve on it, so that’s great to hear! I’m just glad that we now have different options to play wrestling games, both WWE and AEW!

For a first game, not bad. And it offered a lot of unique features that i didnt know i wanted in a wrestling game. Small great things about the game thats really adds up. Hope they continue to improve and add on to it

This game is fun but overall, the fact that this game released like this should be criminal. The game does not look good this KZreadr is in crack. Try playing Cody or OC and tell me it’s not glitchy as fuck. People can never take AEW fan seriously because you guys reduce to see or point out any negatives no matter how glaring. Bare bones career that’s somehow worse than 2k games and no other alternative like universe mode or GM mode. No thanks I’ll go back to Wrestling Empire.

This would be a good first game if it was 98-00 but it’s 2023. This game doesn’t even give you basic things like tornado tag, handicap, ironman, last man standing, cage, editing superstars, multi man ladder. These are all things that were on no mercy. Speaking of no mercy it has a bigger roster, more match types, more arenas & it came out 23 years ago.. this game is more close to a demo than a full game. Unacceptable for a wrestling game in 2023 having less content than a wrestling game in 2000.

I really appreciate your thorough and honest review. I’ve seen way too many diehard AEW fans sucking this game off and it’s exhausting. I’m a very interested consumer, as I’ve gotten bored of the 2K games, and also a jaded AEW fan. They haven’t given me a reason to have faith that this game’s production wasn’t a complete disaster with how long it took, how bare bones it is, and how much money they poured into it. I knew, I just knew it would have significant issues. Thankfully, kicking out of pins, fixing tables, and tweaking the AI are all patchable things. I hope that after a patch or two we hear more positive stuff about this game. For now…I’ll hold off until a sale price. #pavfightforever

It's just different opinions for different people. Like I got the elite version, and so far it's worth every penny to me. The in ring gameplay is really fun. People get too hung up on graphics and everything else and forgot that the fun factor should be what's most important. And like you said the updates should do ALOT. AEW seems like theyre welcoming fan input and what they want. So it actually is pretty good for a 1st attempt

Daily objectives for money to buy stuff in the shop after it resets makes it so every game mode has value IMO. Guess we just see it differently, cuz I see ALOT more than just a 1 on 1 exhibition match. Sorry you're not enjoying it tho man, hopefully after a few updates you'll find more entertainment in it

I'm 40 years old and was looking for the nostalgia, and I got exactly what I was looking for. Sure, there's a TON of things that could be improved, no question. I'm not saying this is a perfect finished product. I'm just saying I'm enjoying the game. I'm sorry you aren't. But I can tell by your comment and the past comments of yours that I can read that you're one of those people that don't really see things for what they are and is really never happy with a product. But that's OK, the world needs people like you to make these guys step their game up. So I get it

Four years to make a game that has 10 match types you can only play in Exhibition Mode with wrestlers and control schemes that remind me of PS2 games that are actually still among my favorites to play to this day so that part is fine by me. That is where the positives the end for me. Minigames that had nothing to do with wrestling aren't necessary. No Universe Mode-type area to set up shows and matches? That should be standard in ANY wrestling game! Creation Suite is basic and not much in substance. There is not enough to justify the price tag it came out with or even the 40 bucks I paid for it. It looks and feels like a demo, not a full game.

Things that'd make this a go-to: Full customization (CAW, existing wrestlers, arena, belts, etc.) and attire slots similar to WWF NM. Obviously more match types, more game play customization sliders & on-screen wrestlers. Lastly, a barebones event creator/universe so I can make shows/PPVs with some level of continuity. Other than that, the AKI direction is just 👌

The create options are abysmal. But, the bare bones of the game are solid and it has a ton of potential I feel. Updates and patches could really stretch it out.

The Gameplay is incredible I'm pretty sure they'll patch some stuff up and improve it in the near future. It's a good start

I agreed with most of what you said, but I didn't hate the career mode, my only issue there is its short, and the only way to stat out your CAW, and you can't run your custom wrestler through it again to stat them out further, since all the stats reset if you run it again with the same CAW.

All your points about the gameplay are spot on, the button smashing, the lack of feedback with some moves, I hope they fix those things, the game is good but still needs work.

The March length drives me nuts! You're spot on, however the old classics didn't have this issue a lot of the time you could have Long kick ass matches with near falls on no mercy and revenge This feels like playing wcw revenge with the short match switched on It's so frustrating because it's got a great base

@@KnucklesWTD I don’t like AEW, but I’m willing to put my bias aside for the game If people don’t like the game, just play 2K lol, one game is simulation style and the other is arcade style, I like WWE 2K’s style but some people don’t like WWE 2K style of game, they prefer old school arcade style and Fight Forever is for those people sure the game isn’t a 10/10 but it’s an alternative either way

Everyone’s moveset feels limited they have like 4 grapples and a few strikes kenny has like 10 finishers and signatures but he’s the only one I think the move set needs to be revamped and I think they need create a match type because it’s hella limited

The way your describing the inconsistency with the story mode kinda sounds like the Aew we get on television already

I love the nostalgic artstyle. I had my Nintendo 64 from 95 all the way to 2015 before it died on me. I took it to college with me and I played Mario Party, GoldenEye, and of course the best wrestler game on the 64 ever made No Mercy. I hope they do patch some things like add some type of universe mode like 2k has or even something like a gm mode. Eithet way, I would still play the hell out of this game because it's something different and nostalgic at the same time. Also it has wrestlers and at least they're fighting style and moves in the ring. I hope that also add community creations eventually because I suck at creating real people. I've been making some of the same people on wwe games since SVR 2006 and just updating them every year lol #pavfightforever

It absolutely breaks my heart to say I genuinely get more longevity and enjoyment out of wrestling empire career mode. The gameplay in this game is incredible but there's so many tweaks that need to be made to it. I think overall this game is a soul crushing disappointment because it's just not going to last. Also ps4 players still can't even play the game with internet turned on at all so they are only limited to offline play. Really hoping for updates on this game. I might buy it on pc just for the mods down the line if the game doesn't get updated

Wrestling empire is an amazing game. It is fun. It is brutal. The career and booking mode is great. What i really love is the controls though. Being able to literally control everyone in a match is a feature i wish the wwe games would rip off. In wrestling empire you can tell your story in the ring the way you want. You have the ref swerve you, and then just lay their for the finish. Def a top 3 wrestling game in my book

The button mashing in svr 2006 was perfect. There was an invisible bar you had to fill before the ref said 3. Even if your body was red and they hit a powerful finisher you still had a chance to kick out. Then again this is no svr 2006 lol

It's crazy how far wrestling games have fell. We would have 2-3 wrestling games a year in the 90's and 2000's now we get this. An Ok avg. wrestling game. It's like WrestleMania X8 on Game Cube. Just bare bones.

There is definitely a solid foundation here & with a few tweaks, this game can realize its full potential. On screen reversal prompts would be a welcome addition, similar to what they had in the earlier Smackdown games. They also need to incorporate some sort of escape/rope break | tap out meter for submissions, too. I don’t mind the button mashing for submissions & kick-outs, but they definitely need to incorporate some sort of on screen prompt or indicator for submissions & kick-outs. My only other complaint is the running system needs to be improved & some of the weapons collision detection, particularly with standing tables, needs to be improved. With the addition of some new match types & game modes, as well as consistent roster updates, this can really become a solid wrestling game/alternative to the 2K series!

I love it the gameplay is what brings me in, whatever we get with updates it'll increase the fun and love I have for the game

This game was an example of the phrase “If they don’t give a fuck, we don’t give a fuck”. So much promise. So much potential. Only to be treated with little priority or attention.

Honestly this game to me is very very fun. Kinda in a here comes the pain type of way. My only thing is i hope they add in backstage fighting and maybe even crowd fighting in the future. But #PavFightForever is a really good starting point and if they can add in some modern features in a future update im all for it, because this game has potential to be the future of arcade wrestling games and im here for it. I hope this game gets the love it needs in the future.

It also baffles me that wrestlers do not have individual overall stats. Every wrestler does not feel as special and unique anymore.

I wish they could recreate Smackdown and Smackdown vs Raw games, especially with elements from Here comes the pain, SvR and SvR 06, have some good simulation and a touch of realism, but with crazy gameplay, good damage/stamina metres, good manager modes and crazy storylines In Career mode.

I’ll be honest, I get tired of people expecting perfection in every game, so I expected to be upset at this video at least a bit, but it’s not about perfection, this is about the desire to have the best experience we can. The gameplay is arguably the most fun a wrestling game has been since an SVR game, but metered kick outs, deeper creation options and logo upload, and maybe an ability to toggle short, arcade matches and longer, more dramatic matches would make this real close to perfect.

Balance seems to be indeed the name of the game, because I do recall hearing that for when Hideki Kamiya was looking to make his spiritual successor to Devil May Cry, Bayonetta (2009), with Platinum Games. Rather than replaying his original DMC, from 2001, he instead looked at playing the most recent game in the franchise, DMC4 (2008), to get an idea of where things were at that time for character action games. Its all about taking what worked from the past and building on it, but hopefully they tweak things for the sequel with FOF, if they that solid foundation from the N64 days. #pavfightforever

The most nuanced review of the game. Everyone else is praising it simply because it's arcade like. Fun games need sufficient content or else you'll get tired of it quickly.

More Match Types, Fixing the Momentum and Kick Out System, Deliver constant Content Updates and giving us Backstage Areas in Falls Count Anywhere and this game could be the best Wrestling Game of all time and then you have the Mods on PC aswell

They need to fix the health system. Momentum is great but like you said, matches right now are too short and finishers (or just 2 signatures!) can finish a match instantly. This wasnt the case with No Mercy, where if you hit a finisher early there would be a kick out. They need to give wrestlers more underlying health so that you are forced to have longer matches and cant rely on a finisher ASAP. Hell, I just lost a ladder match without a finisher. I just fell off and never got back up, and it was fairly early. Stuff like that should happen in epic matches where you're worn down or injured, not 3 minutes in out of nowhere. You're also right about momentum + reversals. Its too heavy handed right now. It makes sense that if you lose momentum it should be harder to reverse, but its also because you arent reversing that your momentum got lower. It's a viscous cycle. It also removes the thrill of rallying back, which is something they need to make sure is a possibility because in wrestling, going from destroyed to winning is what makes it so fun to watch.

This game really has potential but theres also Quantity over quality. Im all for the fact that they were inspired by the old WWE games n they brought certains elements to AEW n thats perfectly fine with me but they gotta re-evaluate the quality side as well. There’s a lot of my friends are still get WWE games and just love to play those extreme matches and they last hours just hitting each other with the same weapons over and over again. They unfortunately don’t know about AEW’s existence, with them being more nostalgic wrestling fans than anything, and I would love to introduce them into this game just because of all the weapons they would have a BALL

Charging $60-80 for this game is a crime. Looks fun but it should be $30 tops.

My only issue with this game is Create a wrestler ,and the career mode. Gameplay wise the matches are to short if you can't break the submission and when playing tag team I hate that once I enter the ring to break the pin up I end up hitting whoever enters the ring. Aside from certain issues hopefully we get an update. My CAW looks like crap. We need more faces,more facial hair,tattooes,and upper and lower body gear. We need more moves and I wouldn't mind if they add commentary during matches.

Read so many different comments since the game released and the majority of them say one of the best things is the actual gameplay itself the single hardest thing to get right in any game/genre, any negatives regarding the gameplay I've read are mostly small issues that can hopefully be fixed via a patch, after that the biggest issue that nearly everyone seems to agree on whether a fan of the game or not is that there's simply very little to do in the game with so few match types & match options and along with that a very small roster missing so many AEW wrestlers, so for me it simply comes down to one thing, "will the Devs stay true to their word and go all out and support this game for the long term" if they do I personally feel the potential is HUGE with this game, I really do..

I had to laugh at the Anna Jay part, imagine if you chose lance Archer and she full on powerbombs you 🤣 i know its not meant to be realistic but c'mon 😂

Play Uncharted 1 from 2007. If you think this is good you'll be amazed how much better a 16 year old game looks compared to this

I'm glad somebody's giving their opinion about this game and just not sounding like a whiny little a****** yes it has a bunch of laws so does 2k there's no such thing as the greatest wrestling game out it does need a lot of work but other than that I had fun playing certain things some people are just being so damn harsh on this game like the damn thing slept with there mother

To be fair about the lack of cohesiveness in Road to Elite, actual AEW programming is that way. It also doesn't help that you only do 3 Dynamites prior to the Pay-Per-View. Meaning the game skips months at a time to get to the PPV. They don't have the Monthly Special Dynamites for non PPV months, like Bash at the Beach or Blood and Guts.

Definitely agree with you, hopefully there will be patches and updates to bring more modes to the game and add more features to the current ones, ESPECIALLY creation mode. #PavFightForever

My biggest complaint is when i loadup my last played "road to elite" file it crashes and i have to create a new one. Log off and again. Error need to restart.
