You can have all the talent in the world, but if all you do is have good matches and have little creativity in terms or characters and stories, you're gonna lose people.

@johnharvelhines9803 agreed. They are capable of doing it. The Hangman Page story, Toni Storm, the Patriarchy, MJF vs CM Punk. There have been moments of greatness in there but it's bogged down with a lot of dull, formulaic filler in between. Far too many jobbers are used on the main shows, there is a significant gap between the undercard and the main event. The midcarders have little to no reason for us to be interested in them. You've nailed the major problem though. Too much focus on having the best matches possible every week, overusing spectacular stunts for a big pop at the detriment of their product.

They’re not even good matches. Good matches exist because they blow off or continue a good story. That’s like saying the font in a book is really good, but doesn’t mean as much without actual sentences being written. It’s not even worth remarking upon if there isn’t a sentence or story to be had. Without a story a match is just two guys pretending to do anime moves to each other for no reason.

I’m cheering for the low ratings, because right now the product is on the decline and I want someone to put pressure on Tony to fix his shows. The angle with the EVP’s cosplaying as the nWo has not worked, and I would rather never see another Young Bucks match. The AEW diehards can cope all day about this past Dynamite's ratings debacle, but all the cope in the world doesn't take away from the fact that year-to-year viewership is down over 40% and they struggle to fill house shows. Ever since Punk left (and really, he seemed to be cooling off before he finally left) interest in their product has slowly and steadily fallen. Can they recover?... Sure, but they desperately need an actual booker as opposed to what Tony is... a matchmaker. Anyone can pit Guy A vs Guy B, but there also needs to be a reason to want to watch it besides "work rate" and dangerous, risky highspots. These guys aren't really trying to beat the shit out of each other (and kayfabe is dead), so you need "heat" to allow people to suspend disbelief and enjoy it as if they really were trying to kill each other. I'd be truly surprised if AEW gets a new TV deal much beyond, dollars wise, the one they already have.

What if Tony Khan actually did step down in another wrestling manager step up like Scott the Moore or someone that he hired that has more experience? What if someone does that when people pay attention to AEW? I mean it's just competition at this point because WWE is doing pretty good with their consistency and storylines and even their marketing. AEW has been trying to do for marketing more better too but they're booking has been inconsistent but this week's dynamite was actually the best. Again if Tony called step down didn't say anything related to WWE at all and have some dude manage his booking I think people would actually pay attention again.

AEW hardcore fans making the excuse that record low ratings is due to a Kendrick Lamar concert (that would get 200K views at most) is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard about wrestling ratings. Being the most charitable here, but the fact people think they can't play AEW on their TV while stream the concert on another device, is so dumb. Can't people just admit that it might've been an odd week or that them not having the Big Bang theory to lead it in mightve hurt them this week. Things will be fine, fans just have to stop making silly excuses.

Devante Rackley made a great video going over the ratings and he actually read the article talking about why AEW's ratings are down. One of the excuses was because of Juneteenth yet in the same article they said the movie Black Panther (which was on instead of The Big Bang Theory this week) didn't have as many viewers as the show has, meaning AEW legitimately relies on that show to boost their ratings. Another excuse was that "the weather was nice". I wish I was making that up 😂

The excuses for low ratings against other big events doesn't really hold up when you go back in time. AEW, when it was hot and had emerging stars, did very, very well in the ratings against the NBA/NHL playoffs and other sporting events. But those numbers declined year after year as disagreements about AEW's booking began to rise. This is booking for the sickos. Sure, you'll make them happy by booking pointless matches with no heat, but the general crowd you need to survive as a company will leave to watch just about anything else.

Forbidden Door to AEW is what Survivor Series (Raw vs. SmackDown) was to WWE. You essentially stop any storylines for a month to shoehorn in "exhibition dream matches" and lets be honest AEW has already signed the top talents from NJPW & CMLL. The concept was cool at first but when you can have a Zack Sabre Jr., El Vikingo etc. just show up on random episodes of Dynamite; having a Forbidden Door PPV seems pointless. Not to mention that due to politics you can't even have AAA and CMLL affiliated wrestlers on the same card together which actually contradicts the concept of the PPV.

People criticised WWE for years, and rightly so, when rivalries took a back seat to Raw vs Smackdown at Survivor Series. WWE has pivoted away from that in recent times and notably Survivor Series has returned to being a top PLE. AEW has immediately started making the mistakes that WWE stopped making. Tony Khan refuses to learn lessons from other people and insists he knows better, all the while taking advice from the worst possible people.

  • @bigkevin579

One of AEW's biggest issues with viewers is that they cater to a particular crowd of people. AEW can't draw the casual viewer because they fail to get their viewers invested in the wrestlers from the likes of CMLL, NJPW, or the indies. They present them assuming the viewer already knows them. The only ones who do are the diehards and you now have even those starting to fail to watch. Before throwing a match on tv, AEW needs to tell us why we should watch it. The viewers need a reason to invest their time. Lately the product has been a little better with that but trying to get back those viewers who they already lost lost is another hill to climb.

For nearly 20 years, there was one big company to work in if you wanted to make money and the story they told about the Monday Night War for years after was it was good because competition made WWE better. Bishoff and Turner were not running a company to make WWE better though. I think there are a lot of people who are WWE fans first and wanted competition not because they wanted to watch something besides WWE but because competition would make WWE better so they could eventually switch back to that. If someone wants the product they grew up with and have a lot invested in to be good and they value that more than just watching who has the best show, then once WWE improves they'll go back home. It's almost like what happened with WCW, were WCW fans didn't switch over en masse to Raw, they just stopped watching wrestling because they were WCW fans first and there was no more WCW.

It was the case during the monday night war, and with WWE, and with TNA, and with myriad other companies that made choices that didn't pan out. Then went to a watch party for the Kendrick concert. Which ran from like 6pm till like 11pm. It was that big of an event that people were doing viewing parties. We know there's a lot of cross over between wrestling and hip hop. Is it really had to believe that a significant number of AEW fans chose to watch the Kendrick concert live. NXT is doing what WWE were hoping it would do back during the Wednesday Night War, and beating Dynamite in the demos! Let Michaels cook! /s it’s a fascinating drop, but I hope they can bounce back from it; they probably will

When someone whose job is to watch wrestling doesn't know who these people are, maybe its a mistake to cross pollinate so much.

Crazy to think that for a while AEW was competing with NXT but now NXT is way ahead.
