It’s definitely not SM’s view on tattoos. It’s the broadcasting stations, and the country has a whole in general. All tattoos need to be covered to be able to be broadcasted on TV, so it’s technically illegal in a sense.

No but SM is their agency, they must have been ok with their artists getting tattoos cuz there's so many sm artists with tattoos. They just have to cover it up when they're performing or going on TV.

Johnny, Yuta, Taeyong, Ten have a bunch of tattoos so it’s not an SM restriction I guess. But they cover them up in music shows aired on tv and stuff so maybe it’s to save herself the hassle - for now

Aespa are still rookies in their company, they’re just little girls compared to the giants they’re surrounded by, sm allows their older, more experienced artists to be more free than the ones that are only a few years into their careers. A lot of idols have tattoos, it's just difficult getting one as the government makes it hard for tattoo artists to work. Another thing, it's a hassle to cover all of them up as you can't show them on Korean TV so for music shows etc they have to tape everything up. And just as a society most idols were probably brought up in a way that it's a bad thing only criminals do. I don't know a company who forbids it, maybe for minors as many idols are really young but I don't even know if they could forbid it. It's still your body. But I'm not sure, idol contracts are brutal. Also with big ones you have it harder as an actress later (not only SK so many Western actors don't have tattoos to look more neutral).

@userj793 yap from the big ones definitely. JYPE - Chaeyoung SM - NingNing CUBE - Soojin (ex) YG - all of BP (? According to a quick Google search) RBW - MAMAMOO The other groups are either bg who I don't know or rookie groups with a lot of children so obviously no tattoos. From smaller companies I only know Dreamcatcher Company, 3 members of Dreamcatcher have bigger tattoos. They're pretty cool with it.

I don't think it is an SMent stance but a society stance on body arts in general especially women, even male idols cover their tattoos on TV and official events and other SM male idols got tattoos too ... asian culture is different from western so...

from what i know taemin is very open about his tattoos, so i dont think SMent *totally* prohibits their idols from getting tattoos. But i guess they do 'advise' their idols about tattoos and how it is perceived in the asian culture.

@angelica-ux8wh yeah I mean if you watch any Dreamcatcher performance Siyeon has this large tattoo under her arm and it moves so much that they mostly give up on taping it. Last time it was almost a meme how that tape was hanging on for dear life and did nothing. She also has one on her neck that wasn't taped and only shows with a certain hairstyle and from the back, but she wasn't at the front so the tv show probably thought whatever. But they still tape her shoulder tattoo (just the show for OOTD today: she wore a top that revealed all 3 when moving, only the shoulder one was taped or at least what I saw, not sure about the neck one). I'm sure the rules loosened so they're not getting backlash but you can't just don't care at all. If the tape doesn't work that's fine but no tape at all to begin with is probably not a good idea. Maybe you also watched something only for online and not for TV? Literally everything else like performance videos, dance videos, busking, concerts etc is fine with tattoos. Also fun: NMIXX had that fun stick ons for last cb and they were quite excessive, but that was fine bc well, they're not real.

For those who are unaware, tattoos in East Asia had been associated with gangsters and underground illegal activity for a very long time. Things may be slowly changing nowadays but its still a huge taboo in certain societies as a whole. I can predict that small scale tattoos will become a norm in the near future but full body art may take at least another decade depending on circumstances.

i think they're only that strict to the female artists as bigger tattoos wouldn't fit the "feminine" image they have to uphold. female artists have to tape their tatts (jessi e.g.) yet male artists only have to do it if they're vulgar etc. female idols are just not expected to have tattos so if they do only small ones (dont get this like me tryna defend sm or the industry i myself have tattoos and some larger ones)

​@@ningkibum-lia Your information is wrong about it the main thing why Korean celebrities have to cover their tattoos in TV shows is because of the government that sees tattoos as vulgar just recently tattoos were illegal in South Korea unless you were getting a tattoo by a license doctor and not your local across the street tattoo shop

There are some crazy Idols getting tattos and then regretting, just for the toxic trend. Also you can t represent certain brands looking like a ganster. Certain brands want a classy elegant look to represent them. But it is her choice afterall. Everyone should be responsible for their decisions after all. Less colaborations mean less money.

I think it’s more of a Korean thing, like broadcasts have to edit out their tattoos or make them cover it up. So it’s less work if they’re small

Probably has nothing to do with what SM thinks bc then they would've not allowed her to show them at all or say this. They have to tape them for public broadcasting as it's not allowed on SK TV (other things too like smoking I think). So SM probably doesn't want to go through all the trouble of hiding it and redesigning costumes. Yes, it's also an image thing definitely as with these small ones I didn't even know she had some. But heck, even Twice with their cute concept have that one member with a lot of tattoos. I hope it gets more accepted, idols with tattoos are really cool and more and more get tattoos.

It's not allowed on South Korean TV so they can show it, but for music shows and other things on public broadcasts they have to use tape. SK society thinks it's a thing for criminals. For a while even the tattoo artists had to work on secret.

If that's SM's restriction, I would fully support it. Don't want a repeat of Nana's regret
