Aesop Rock is amazing. Still remember seeing him in concert. He stayed after the show for an extra 45 mins just to meet every fan who wanted to and take pics for free.

Not only did he do that when I saw him, but he also took any request he could ( he turned me down for Syrup since Mike wasnt there ) but he wait a bit before he does requests while he memorizes every single face in the crowd. And then I'm pretty sure he performed to and acknowledged every single person there.

"I'm like out there in that true 3D, that new ether that "do you read me" DO I READ? How many new words do I learn, use and hold in storage, how well can I connect those words to the world around me as a thoughtful participant. Guys like Aesop give me an "understanding" of how my brains language centre works. Its optimised by the daily word associations when reading. Often when I read. I don't have to do "catching up" on the language use, the associations become vast and I can explain the world around me, to myself, better. That is Aesop rock. The images are crystal clear when the listener enters the right frame of mind. You just gotta catch up. Come back, read the lyrics and read and read and read... @@Shoespider1 There is a general theme of isolation and disconnectedness as is a fairly consistent theme in most of his writing but like any real art it remains ambiguous enough to mean a lot of things to a lot of people. My favorite thing about his writing is that I consistently pick up on references I didn't understand before and I draw more complex meaning from the writing as a whole over time. He generally tends to write about very personal experiences in a very coded way so there is no way to ever fully understand his meaning but again you can pick up on general moods and experiences that are very relatable.

What an interesting time for this to come up. For me, the theme of isolation runs incredibly heavy through this song. That drumming you all do in the wheel when you're wondering what's next in life, or what you're supposed to do. The lost feeling when you're trying to communicate and just coming back with static. "I been feeding back in these headphones, beating back a profound fear Farewell to my bread crumbs, is anybody even out there?"

That was when mystique was still possible, and Aesop oozed it. I love how this song is just a giant advertisement for a video game that probably didn't get the attention it deserved. Both are incredible quality.

@@MrPhantaze Wait, you actually believe this 3 year old game is losing sales because of this song's message?? Ongoing war discourages buying it?? This was released in 2019. The US was waging wars in Syria, Afghanistan, & Iraq. Did those wars also discourage sales??? No ones looking at this game to buy and actively thinking "I would have gotten this if it wasn't for all the war in the world". I don't know how to respond to your reactionary comment.

@@MrPhantaze I'm not about to have a discussion about international politics with you. No one is considering buying the game Freedom Finger but abandoning the idea because of "ongoing war", when wars have been a constant since the game was launched. If "ongoing war" was hurting the sales of this video game, It would have been hurt for the last 3 years. What a reactionary take. You are a reactionary. Take your business elsewhere. You make me want to delete my original comment so this conversation thread disappears.

With the odd stress pattern and the rapid, sparse, very briefly-held syllables in the verses, Aes's flow on this is kinda reminding me of El-P. There's still Aes's hallmark droning effect (like the way he doubles his voice or whatever he's doing, the chorus on None Shall Pass is one easy example) in the refrain, and the drawn-out syllables that give that weird clash with the mostly tight rhythmic delivery. It's crazy, hearing how, bit by bit, Aesop Rock keeps evolving or just switching it up enough to keep his sound fresh. There's boatloads of "underground" (that is, millions of fans, but not "mainstream" or corporately-pushed) rappers who have sounded the same for over a decade, and here I keep coming back for every new track this guy puts out, *_not_* to listen to what I know is going to be more of the familiar, comfortable, formulaic numbing lullaby, but instead to see how Aes is going to throw me off just when I thought I knew, in detail, how he worked.

I hear ya but Aes ond El are on way different levels. I've seen both live and been a fan for over ten years. Aesop is some kind of genie, his actual flow delivery and breath control is monotone but extremely choppy and precise. El is passionate but not the same type of mc. I do hear a little hesitation though I just can't see that as being influenced by Els current style while it is reminiscent of cancer for cure which would be a weird reference shout out or call back for Aesop.
