    Just as the saying goes, the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing. While all the "good" Aes Sedai were satisfied with being completely useless and pompous while pretending to be "servants of all", the Black Ajah worked their asses off. If it weren't for some very few actually helpful sisters, the White Tower would have been completely doomed.

    Couldn't agree more. I can't begin to quantify how infuriatingly pompous, closed minded and vacuous I found the Aes Sedai as I read WOT. Like, when I read the first book, I found it so strange that everyone looked at the Aes Sedai with such suspicion because they were ostensibly these powerful "mages" who protected the world from evil. After getting a couple books in though, I was so thoroughly disgusted by them that I totally agreed with the haters. Maybe not to the extent of the white cloaks and their weird beliefs, but still.

    I hated most of the characters and organizations that I encountered in the book. From the Aes Sedai to the Asha men, from Andor to the Seanchan empire. Part of what made me dislike them so was things like forcing oaths on people who had no means of resistance or understanding and the slavery so many of them engaged in. The bloody Aes Sedai went around torturing and enslaving people, no wonder they were distrusted.

This is why for me (and this may be a controversial opinion) Cadsuane was the most respectable and admirable of the Aes Sedai. She knows they’re all idiots and just does whatever the hell she wants, which makes her cool in her own unique way without being dragged down by her Aes Sedai association. Imma stick up for Browns a little bit. Preserving knowledge is going to require most of the sisters spending day after day repairing and re-writing manuscripts. Unless they unload that work onto an artisan class that works under them that does that work for them. Eggs in one basket is still a poor idea though, unless you're talking about the food.

    I agree. The Browns don’t get enough credit. A lot of information was lost after the Breaking and their sole focus was to preserve what they could for future generations. In the books, we even saw Browns visit the libraries in other cities, perhaps for the purpose of reading and copying texts. They even traveled to get first-hand accounts of major events and wrote those down too, for the sake of documenting history. On top of that, they did a lot of theorizing, testing (trial & error), took notes and did share them with others to build upon later.

    To some extent, yes. But the very pervasiveness of the Black Ajah is yet another failing of the Tower as a whole, which goes back to James' point of them being incapable of reflection and accepting others' ideas: if Aes Sedai actually took the time to study the Oath Rod a bit more and realize that Oaths can be undone, or if they didn't immediately respond to claims that some of them might be corrupted by the Dark One as common rumors outside the tower suggested with censorship and denial, if they'd just taken a moment to do an internal investigation, they wouldn't even have this problem.

  • @kght222

    @kght222

    actually requiring an oath to never lie is likely make me trust you less. because it means that your organization is admitting that you cannot be trusted. the wise ones got it right and the kin were on the right path. the aes'sedai were obviously corrupt and their 3 oaths were the best evidence for it. the more hilarious thing is that the 3 oaths were probably intentionally inflicted by the black ajah, because they could find a way around them while the rest would not only be restricted in action but would literally lose half of their life. the white tower was probably conceived by ishamael, it uses an old word (ajah) that most aes'sedai even at the time would not have been aware really related to temporary alliances and organizations based on current issues then dissolve. they hold 7 ajahs in place for thousands of years so that ideas get so ingrained that they become toxic. they bind themselves with tools that were meant to bind against the crime and punish the criminal with a reduced life to try to prove their trustworthiness with oaths that outwardly say that they cannot be trusted. they have been corrupted by the shadow from the start and it would be the white ajah's job to see this. because this is logic. the white ajah completely failed at their job, because they should have seen the corruption.

The black sedai might have been the only part of them, that actually got anything done. Their oaths are practically useless, as they usually will try to manipulate and half truth their way anyway (and almost everybody expects that). In short, perfect example of ancient order that has fallen from grace long time ago. Love the Asha-mans, one of the best thing Dragon reborn has done, if only he didnt hate his own creation that much, that would help.

    This is a pretty good summation. Damn, the Aes Sedai are infuriating. Their close minded arrogance makes them such idiots. (Not bad writing. They're meant to be that way?

    Yeah all good points, though two slight points of clarification. Reds are for fighting the abuse of The Power. Yes this includes all men but it can technically also include women who are misusing it. And Whites seem to have some focus on mathematics. Its only really hinted at once when the POV character overhears some arguing over the best way to formulate a projection of food spoilage, but I'd consider that one of their main uses.

    The whites spend so much time debating the philosophical merits of each system that the original point (that food is impossibly spoiling) is immediately forgotten and some one of another Ajah does the job themselves.

    @@andrewdiaz3529 Fair point, they're all pretty useless. Except the blues I guess. They actually get shit done. They're also the worst because of how upset Eqwene got with Elain over her setting up a hospital of her own with channellers. And don't forget it was the ashamen who saved the refugees in the last battle, not aes sedai. Given that they are much much much more happy to use the power, they may do a lot of the things suggested here. They don't have ajahs anyway which probably help. I honestly think its an awful system. Who wants to only do ONE thing forever. People change.

    I do hate that insuler nature of the tower wasn't addressed quite enough or will enough. Like... Even the men's tower was more integrated into the lives of people and more trusted than them and they were like.... Going insane a minute ago. Robert does portray the mistrust and dislike of them pretty will though and how in the middle of the end of the war they were MIRED in a civil war but the ending didn't really.... Show much of a path for them. The "new path" eg Egwain is dead and they immediately defaulted to the old gaurd. I think they were excited will but didn't get a will enough conclusion.
