I was 14 at that concert in Cleveland in Aug of 75. Rod Stewart and the Faces, Uriah Heep, Aerosmith, Mahogany Rush and Blue Oyster Cult. It started to rain at the beginning of the concert and everyone went for cover and we went towards the stage and got front row. Aerosmith was incredible back then.

Born in 76, so I was 15 and 16 when the Seattle Grunge sound changed the world. I can remember the very first time hearing Smells like Teen Spirit on the radio and seeing the music video for the first time on MTV the next morning before going to school that day. I would purchase my first guitar a few months later after saving up the money. Life changing for sure. I love all the classic rockers like Led Zeppelin especially, but hearing Cobain do things that sounded a bit easier on guitar and making them sound like I could do that in my garage gave me the confidence to give it a go.

Hi Carl, I have to say I wasn't really sure of what to make of you and or channel, you sort of just showed up one day and I deeply appreciate where you take us. As an advanced/intermediate player I see the power in your sessions, showing WHY the music works, the nuance, the rhythm ideas, etc. You have instantly impacted my playing.....and your low key professional style in doing so is excellent. Congrats and thank you!

When I was that age, "No Quarter," and "When The Levee Breaks" where like my favorites... I got on to Billy Squire for awhile, "The Stroke," "Everybody Wants You," "Emotions In Motion," and somewhere in there, Billy Thorpe, "East of Edens Gate" was an all time favorite of mine. Amazes me how many people have never heard it. One of the best opening riffs, "Turn Me Loose," by Loverboy. So many great tunes back in the day. Haven't heard anything else that compares to 'back when...

Not sure how many would agree, but one song off of what I concider an outstanding album that stands out to me was "Sitting On A Rainbow" by Mountain off the Mountain Climbing album. Mississippi Queen obviously is the standout song and most recognized number getting the most radio play and desrvingly so, but to this dayI can still remember where I was when I first heard it (Rainbow). It also became the first riff I mastered on guitar! Being from Queens NY and a neighbor of Leslie (Weinstein) West I was always a big fan. His phrasing and vibrato coupled with his absolute kick in the groin tone was unsurpassed.

A really great review of the song! Trivia: In one of the “Produce Like a Pro” series Jack Douglas mentions Joe Perry’s lead over the Sweet Emotion outro and the large amount of work it took. Says it was mostly created using studio editing to put together dozens of unrelated two-second bits of Joe fooling around on the guitar. Possibly why you don’t hear many trying to re-create it.

OMG, I love this song! Also first heard it in my mid-teens a couple of years after it was released, as you say, the stuff you hear at that age stays with you forever (when you can't even remember what you were doing yesterday). Of course, there is one other important riff here, I guess very similar to Riff no. 3, and that's the opening bass riff! We all love to pick up a bass every now and then, and one of the reasons is to play stuff like that bass riff! Another great vid and trip down memory lane.

First I must thank you for your wonderful way of teaching and playing music. No one does it better. I have listened to so many episodes and your Aerosmith and Deep Purple totally blew me away! I grew up in Southern California and white I was in high school I saw Jimi, Eric and the Soft Machine at the Anaheim Convention Center. I have never heard such great acoustics. Anyway, Jimi was promoting his first album with a few Axis songs thrown in. Amazing! I also saw Deep Purple during their Machine Head tour at the same venue. Whoever it was not until I moved to Virginia Beach and discovered Aerosmith through my workmate. I guess they were a local band back then. Thank you sir for your attention to what matters in such turbulent times. MUSIC is your special friend and you know who said that!

When I was 15 and 16 it was Aerosmith, Neil Young, Dire Straits, and Sublime getting cemented into my memory. It wasn’t all that long ago LOL. I think both Joe Perry/Brad Whitford and Bradley Nowell are underrated guitarists. Everyone talks about Zeppelin and Floyd but never mentions Aerosmith, and they’re perhaps some of the best riff writers in rock history. A true band with grit. Bradley Nowell on the other hand is written off for being a California Reggae singer, but his guitar solos had a classic rock edge and creativity that was really not around in the 90s

Great video! Thanks for doing one covering Aerosmith, especially concentrating on their musical ability. They get overlooked due to the drug use, but they could get funky - playing some great riffs. For the song, fast forward with the same band: Love in an Elevator off of Pump. Joe Perry states the main riff is a play on Hendrix's Dolly Dagger. It started me on my musical journey.

Aerosmith USED TO be so good - Pre 80’s. Seventies Aerosmith, and KZread Aerosmith are like two completely different bands: one quintessential cool, one embarrassing, and very uncool.

I’ve always said that Aerosmith was the greatest all round rock band! Although, I was so disappointed by their blues album “Honkin’ On Bobo” because it was too overdone! Steve Tyler’s voice is so great but he over did it with this high pitched weird squeal in more than one song! God, I wish I was in the studio so I could stop him! Other than that, shut my gob, right? Lol
