VIDEO INFO: Perhaps a case of ‘My Fair Lady’ ... for perhaps the first time in some decades Steven Tyler has just the slightest whiff of apprehension as he approaches the TV debut of the band’s cleaned up (in every sense) demeanour.
Having defined the concept of rock stardom/excess in the 1970s and then the burned-out/washing-up process in the early 80s, this is an early milestone on their reboot for the MTV generation.
Heroin spoons had been exchanged for hairspray cans and their brand was now defined by slickness of choreography rather than sickness of catalepsy. But now that the job description included appearances on glossy shizzle like the ‘MTV Video Music Awards presented by Arsenio Hall’ (here at LA's Universal Amphitheatre on 7 September 1988), they perhaps felt some of the potency had been shaved off along with those rougher edges. That said, if you can't beat them, join them and as they demonstrate here, as they would for the next decade, they set the standard for mainstream hard-rock.
