Hey thanks Stu for the video. I’ve never done aeros in my 4 but have let an ex F-18 pilot take it up and do some. He simply loved it and is looking forward to the day when he finishes his 4. Just retired from the airforce after 39+ years so hope to get in some more flying in my 4. Excellent advise about not trying aeros without proper training. This is the same advice that all my airforce pilot friends give me also.

What a treat to fly a Vans RV4. I flew one with Dick Van Grunsven in Oshkosh. Why is it called a RED-RV-4 in the Transport Canada Aircraft Registry when it is a Vans?

You can’t just pull from entry speed and think your making a loop. As you pull, your airspeed falls off so your rate of turn increases and you end up making an L shape as viewed from the ground. You have to pull till you reach a point just before the top and begin backing off the pull force because of the drop off of airspeed and increased rate of turn. Push forward to let it fly over the top and as the A/S increases begin pulling again because the rate of turn begins to decrease. It all involves a person on the ground watching your maneuvers and the shapes you can perform with an aerobatic performance. Love this stuff.

I'm a newb to aero but the "internet experts" tell me that 2-up in an RV4 is simply not doable. Is it the fact that all maneuvers you flew were controlled, smooth and positive that allows you to prove the nay sayers wrong? Is weight an issue with two adults in this type of maneuvering? Thanks. Still have not decided between the 14, the 8 or the 4.

Most the RV's aren't "aerobatic" with 6 people due to weight. Realize that just means they aren't capable of pulling 6 G's at gross weight. They're more than capable of pulling 4 G's, and most the aerobatics performed here are 3 G maneuvers or less. As long as you keep the load factor below 4.4, you're good to go with gentle aerobatics dual. Solo, with half fuel you're able to pull up to 6G's, although for the life of me I can't see why you'd want to.

Wow, Stu! Great video. I think you have a new (old?) career in front of you once you retire from the service. Question though, and I apologize if this is personal: two guys in a 4 doing aeros?!? I gotta ask -- can I get weights for you and Frank? I'm still trying to figure out how to shoehorn my 200lb fat ass into a 4 (long term planning) and here I see two guys in one doing aeros? Maybe I don't have to worry about my weight quite so much? Secondarily, I'm just under 6ft. How much clearance am I going to have from the canopy?

@@stusaircraftfactory6592 isn’t the aerobatic weight of the -4 only 1375 lbs? Really only a single seater for aerobatics.. That’s what I like about the -8 and -7, you have more margin (1600 lbs aerobatic weight I think) That looks like a really nice -4 though. I think your comment at the end about the lightness in the pitch on the back side of the loop is from the weight in the rear seat. Take it up by yourself, and it won’t do that as much. Still very light in pitch overall, but the aft CG from the rear seater and only a fixed pitch prop makes it more want to tuck. The wood prop ones are even more tail heavy.

I tend to agree with Thomas in that, sure your in a 6 G Airplane , but the designer has documented that it’s a utility’s category bird when the gross weight exceeds 1375 LBS, you two & no fuel are over that aren’t you?

@@garryshepherd8005 Nope. Math puts its just under. I’m lighter than owner and that airplane is built very light. It is true the CofG moves aft but with common sense and not pulling 6G you’re well within the limit. The video is not meant to say that anyone can do this in a RV4 but it’s very benign. It’s just for fun and we took the precautions

A 4 is super light on the controls with a full size dude in the back. Are comparing the 8 solo with the 4 with 2 guys? Way different cg so way lower stick force per g. I expect the 8 will be closer with a passenger. I’m 6 months from flying mine (bwahahaha - shutup man) so this is really cool to see. I actually thought you had to be solo to do be down to the aerobatic weight in the 4. I guess you guys had low tanks? Cool vid.

I was thinking along the same lines when comparing the two airplanes. With a person in the back of my -4, it's a completely different animal. (still very tame though...) With a full sized person in the back of my -4, you can just about pull 3-4G with your fingertips. It's very pitch sensitive.
