Aero bike, rain and Kent hills: it did not end well…

I decided to join a strong group for a long ride in Kent, testing my aero bike Velobuild VB-R-068 outside its natural characteristics. Rim brakes, carbon wheels, rain and dirt don’t go well together. Unfortunately I ended up coming back home by train…

    good grief, I thought you were going to say that the train ticket was a hundred and something quid for a moment! I know train prices are ridiculous in UK (as is everything else), but still... Phew. Re: skipping chain: the only time this happened to me recently (Shimano Ultegra) was when the chain got full of grit from a ride in damp, wintry conditions. I decided not to go outside in anything other than bone dry conditions from now!

    I'm sure you'll have success with your gearing issues. At least you know which are the best bikes to use for the different types of rides and conditions. And we've all had better days on the bike. Thank heavens for the train ride. That would have been a long ride home otherwise!

  • @Joe_BAXTER16
    @Joe_BAXTER164 ай бұрын

    Hi Federico, I think that the issue is caused by a wrong fixation of the chain. There is a piece of metal between the two jockey wheels and the chain must pass right from this peace after the first jockey wheel and then go to the second jockey wheel. I have made this mistake once. Beautiful bike 👌

    Sorry your day ended badly. Perhaps you were actually saved Fede from busy dirty roads and insufficient coffee. Sounds to me that the derailleur hanger is twisted. I invested in one of those hanger alignment tools and it's great, used surprisingly often. Even your chain snagging like it has would twist the hanger enough to interfere with the indexing. It only takes the bike to fall over the wrong way and you'll need it! You can even make the tool yourself - there are KZread vids on it I think.

    I cant get one thing. Why dont you buy ONE proper modern bike on disc brakes with modern wide wheels and wide TLR tyres? Why you build these half-functional, no braking heavy and ugly bikes. Why aero is more important than reliability of braking for somebody who dont know what zone2 is? Why somebody try to achieve low weight by building crapy bike and not by the lowering body weight. Wearing cameras and other stuff is no weight penalty and wearing disc brakes is weight penalty? Cant get it.

    Fair questions and I will try to answer with more context so to make it easier to follow my process. I started with an aluminium Merida Scultura with mech discs, I paid £500 and I did not even know if I was going to enjoy road cycling at that time. That was around 10Kg. Then I got very much into it and I wanted something remarkably lighter, but at the same time I was not prepared to spend a fortune. I paid £1100 for a used Canyon Ultimate rim and that was the best money vs weight I could find in the market. Starting weight around 7.8Kg. The feeling of a lightweight rim brake bike is addictive, no matter your body mass. I am happy with my composition and I would not seek to loose weight, but I understand your comment. My GoPro does not weight much at all. I built a second Canyon Ultimate with carbon wheels and that is below 7Kg including pedals. Total cost less than £3500. I feel if I was going to replicate the same weight with a modern hydro disc bike for the same weight I would have to spend a lot more. In my particular position it works well to have an Ultimate with aluminium wheels and cheap components for the commute (i retired the Merida), a better Ultimate with deep carbon wheels that is light and still not expensive and the Velobuild aero is another addition as it was so cheap (frame is below £500). To me it works to have different bikes for different purposes, maybe at the same cost of a medium range modern hydro disc road bike. I feel I am as fast, if not more, with my Ultimate or the Velobuild than some modern bikes, apart from braking in the wet descends. I have done a lot of other sports and zone 2 is a cycling fixation imho, like ftp.
