AEGON Championships (Men's Singles) 2012 - David Nalbandian disqualified

David Nalbandian is disqualified from the AEGON Championships at Queens after accidentally injuring a linesman during an angry outburst. He was playing against Marin Cilic in the final.
For those of you who want to know. The ATP code states: "Players shall not at any time physically abuse any official, opponent, spectator or other person within the precincts of the tournament site. For purposes of this rule, physical abuse is the unauthorized touching of an official, opponent, and spectator or other person." So there you go. Keep calm and carry on is what one must do when one goes a break down in the second set.
Interview straight after: "I am sorry," says the Argentine, to some booing and some cheering. "I am sorry to do that. Sometimes we get very frustrated here on court. It is tough to control. Something it is a mistake. It is a tough moment to end a final like that. Sometimes we feel the pressure from the ATP. It is a mistake and I have to pay for that. Everybody makes mistakes."
Former Grand Slam doubles champion Peter Fleming on BBC Sport: "We players sometime like to think of it as us versus the world, as if we are victims. But sometimes you have to take responsibility and it was unfortunate Nalbandian didn't go for that when he had the opportunity."
BBC Radio 5 live summariser David Felgate: "Nalbandian has got it all wrong. It wasn't a sincere enough apology. To go off on some political rant had no bearing on what he did. I wonder if there could be a bigger fine for bringing the game into disrepute for that speech. He didn't even apology to the touch judge or Marin Cilic. It was a poor show from David Nalbandian."

@@anasstihouna7915 Intention doesn't matter. The rule is the rule. A player hits a ball in a reckless manner, and it hits a lineperson or umpire or ball kid, it's a default.

Basically he just lost it on a point to go down 3-4 in the second set. Thought he was kicking a solid wall with padding. Bounced into the umpire sitting just behind it. He won the first so he was still in good standing. Short story is that he has problems with anger.

Nalbandian got disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct. He obviously didn't mean to hurt the umpire, but his actions caused the umpire to be hurt. Kicking the barriers would be enough for a code violation anyway, but when someone is hurt as a result, disqualification is the only possible outcome.

He apologized to all he had to apologize for. After that, only after he showed his frustation with the ATP. An company that has double standards. For example: If in your job you always get your paycheck late, and the one day you arrive 20min late and they deduct 10% of your salary. Yes you will say sorry for being late, but also will complain about the double standars, Right ? Thus Nalbandian has a point. And I agree with him. ATP is a disgrace.

No, if someone is bleeding out from his leg he needs to go to medical. Shots later on showed a different angle, and there was a large cut all the way across his leg. Rules are rules, it doesn't matter if he was angry at the time. If he threw his racket and it hit a 10 year old boy would your views be any different?

he does not have a point at all. If you arrive late and complain about double standards that's one thing. You don't attack your boss for complaining that you are late. People in general need to have some discipline and self control. We can't go around doing things like this and then saying oh it was an accident or I didn't mean it. He clearly looses control and kicks the advertising board. Professional sports players are in the public eye and this is no way for anyone to behave. deserves a ban!

The ATP didn't disqualified him because he lost his temper for a second. It did only because it caused an injury to someone. That's all. Racket Breaking for instance is quite normal. Federer does it, Djokovic does it, etc... You may say: " "People in general need to have some discipline and self control" "Professional sports players are in the public eye and this is no way for anyone to behave. deserves a ban!" Inconsistently enough you don't. Why the Double-Standards ?

You think he's a good guy, even though he takes half his apology time to criticize the ATP Tour, which provides him with an opportunity to make a fabulous living?! They had to DQ him, and Nalbandian has no one but himself to blame. Maybe next time he'll keep his temper in check. He clearly didn't mean to kick or injure the guy on purpose, but it was not an accident. If he was chasing down a ball and ran the guy over, THAT would have been an accident. The kick was intentional although the out come might not have been.

Wrong on all points. 1.The line judge would not have avoided it if younger. 2. Nalbadian was rightly disqualified 3. The linesman did not exaggerate. 4. Nadal is not the best player of all time. I highly doubt he meant any malice by it. It's not like the line judge made a wrong call. He was just frustrated and wanted to kick something. Some people smash their racquets. If the racquet bounced awkwardly and smacked someone in the face, they would probably suffer the same fate, but would the judge them as harshly as you would Nalbandian.

The official's age was irrelevant- even if younger he would have been sitting not expecting the board to be kicked into him at close range, and would not have reacted in time. Nalbadian did not intend to take it out on him but disqualification was inevitable. Otherwise tennis could go on a slippery slope the way of football, with fights, pushing officials etc.

It looks like Nalbandian thought the box was much sturdier than it actually was, he didn't expect it to just fold like it did. Still, an easy way to have avoided this would have been to not kick the box, which was really really close to that judge anyway. Pity.

Really? He caused the line judge to have a pretty nasty cut on his leg and go hobbling off of the court. If anyone a football player kicked in anger and smashed his foot into a ref on the field causing injury, how much you want to bet he would be out of the game? Although there was no malicious intent, he still did something stupid even when he was winning the match. The guy had to go recieve medical attention. If he'd flung his racquet and hit a ball boy/girl or judge, it's the same deal.

Accidently Injuring a Linesman, what drugs your on. He clearly hasn't any reguard for the Line Judge sitting there. In every other sport apart from combat sports thats a disqualification. If you done that in the street you'd be arrested. First rule in sport "keep your composure", he didn't. As for the commentators and crowd wanting the game to continue, what next? Dont like the decision, get a new Umpire!!! No one at there work should have to take that.

There wasn't much he could do after the accident occurred besides apologize and humbly accept disqualification, which must I say he did obediently. It would be a different story if he directly attacked the linesmen, though.

no,only deliberate acts MUST cause desqualification and in this case loosing the final.I ask then if his gesture could be deliberate what do you supose to be the right punish for him?arrest for asault and ban for life from the ATP?he didnt kicked the man!he kicked the wooden ad board which by the way was very poor constructed.what if he in his play would step on that wooden shitty board?this man is not McEnroe to kick things at every match.it was a stupid accident.sorry for my english man
