Adyashanti on the Teachings of Nisargadatta Maharaj

Музыка

Nisargadatta Maharaj was one of the towering modern-day figures of nonduality. His book, I AM THAT, has become a beloved spiritual classic of the direct path to spiritual awakening. In this first session in a four-part audio course, Adyashanti leads a transformational inquiry into the core teachings of this illumined sage, and clarifies how to apply them in the most direct and efficient way possible, not only in terms of spiritual practice, but also how they relate to everyday life.
Audio excerpted with permission from Adyashanti's 2014 Audio Course, I Am That - Exploring the Teachings of Nisargardatta, available for purchase here: adyashanti.opengatesangha.org...
Adyashanti (whose name means “primordial peace”) is an American-born spiritual teacher who has been teaching for 26 years. He is the author of eleven books. Born Stephen Gray in 1962 in Cupertino, California, Adyashanti grew up as an athlete and competitive bicycle racer. At age 19, he became interested in enlightenment, began to meditate, and became fully absorbed in a quest for ultimate truth. . . .

Quotes:
"The entire core of Nisargadatta's teaching is his relentless return to 'Dwell in the sense of I Am.'"
"He had a very intense and fierce one-pointedness on self-realization,
and yet it would be misunderstanding his teaching to think that he didn't care.
He speaks quite eloquently about love. That is the fruition of a deep and abiding realization."
"He would say over and over that the I Am, the fact that you exist,
is the one thing that you can know for certain in this life.
Even if you deny your existence, you have to be in order to deny it."
"When you go to the root of your sense of yourself, it opens to universal consciousness."
"Earnestness isn't a kind of energy like, 'Okay, I'm ready to storm the gates of heaven and start meditating five hours a day.'
Earnestness is different from enthusiasm. What Nisargadatta is talking about has to do with what we love and what we cherish."

My teacher Ramesh Balsekar was a devotee of Nisargadatta Maharaj . His teachings are very clear. The only truth is an impersonal sense of I am everything else is a concept. His emphasis was on peace of mind in daily living. He and his devotee Gautam Sachdeva have many hours of teachings on you tube. Ramesh passed in 2009 but Gautam is still alive and well (June 2024).

A close friend stayed in Mumbai in 1981 to 1983 to be with Maharaj. He told me one woman came for a visit and in his characteristic way Mahara very intensely said to her. “ what are you doing here, this is not for you, you chant japa, sing Bhajans you should be like Meera ,you follow the path of devotion, be like Meera.”.

Sorry this misses the point. "I am" was intended to be a stepping stone to the Absolute Supreme Reality (his words) which is . . . well see for yourself what it is because that will change over time. As he said frequently "Just keep going . . .Just keep going beyond". Upon deep reflection it is hard to find anything of consequence different between his teachings and Dzogchen. Every single time I read his words they have more meaning for me through the passage of time and my own changing understanding. Finally now it's as if each and every word is exploding off the page. Nothing wasted. Nothing extra. I consider him the greatest spiritual teacher of our time and I don't know everything but I've deefinitely done my homework. Of course great for my karmic situation. We are all on our own paths to the same place. Good luck everyone. You Are That.

Somewhere I read Nisargadatta quoted as saying that reading the book "I Am That " from start to finish could be misleading in that it was answers to individuals (as Adya points out ) - hence the apparent contradictions in his directions . Perhaps taking one line and delving into it is beneficial. Dwell in the sense of ones' Self (I Am ) . That Self is everyone and everything , without trying.
