Today I'm sharing some tips, tricks and advice on what to do when you start a PhD. Things like navigating freshers week, meeting your supervisor, connecting with other students and much more!

@@LucyHargrave Thank you - I'll be starting my PhD soon, and was considering submitting a mind-map or document of my initial thoughts to my supervisors, but I didnt know if that was a bit much, and should let them lead. I'd be interested in hearing your advice.

@@Michael-cm4fh So I didn't do this for my first meeting, but I don't think it is a bad thing to do. What I would suggest is rather than submitting it to your supervisor write everything you want down and then bring it up in the meeting. Typically the first meeting contains a fair bit of admin stuff, discussing expectations (how you'll work together, what you want to achieve for the PhD, potentially even what you want to do after the PhD and how you see your project working). So if you have these written down, and anything else you'll know what to discuss and won't forget anything. My main piece advice for supervision meetings is take notes, be proactive (aka if there is something you want to do or unsure about bring it, don't wait for them to mention it) and set clear expectations/goals of what you'll achieve before the next meeting. I hope that helps!

Hello, sorry for taking so long to respond! The best place to start is the course website (as an English Lit PhD student I don't have contact with the engineering department) so I would suggest looking there - www.birmingham.ac.uk/university/colleges/eps/study/postgraduate/index.aspx
