Advice for Painting Cars: Plein air watercolor demo of Diner in Red Hook, NY

New book! Wonder City with writer Victor Fuste: www.simonandschuster.com/book...
FULL LENGTH PLEIN AIR DEMO: www.patreon.com/jaredlovestodraw
Hello Art-family!
I wanted to do a video talking about some advice for painting cars because they can be very frustrating. Not only is the light constantly changing and you're up against the elements... I feel like every time I start to draw or paint a car, it drives away. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching!
Happy sketching,
Jared Cullum

@@JaredCullum Your cars did move, but I often saw end of a painting day on the way back a beautiful old shed or farm building. Been desolate for many years. And when I returned the next week it was demolished and nothing left then a pile of stones. Now we have always a photo camera with us in our phone. but in the 80ties there was nothing. you could take a picture but you have to wait when the role was full and bring it to the photo store to let it develop.

Another great demo, thanks Jared. One thing I'd be interested in is a more in-depth appraisal of the level of wetness you maintain (or don't) throughout the process. I think you have it pretty damp for a fair chunk of the painting judging by the fact that you have the mister in hand to at least half way through but do you let it fully dry out ever? It doesn't look like it but maybe certain areas are left to evaporate fully or thereabouts. This is probably one of those things that you need to witness first hand but I'm in the UK so probably not going to be able to do that anytime soon unless you're thinking of coming over to run courses in the future. I plein air paint but tend to use the more thickly applied dry brush method from the learned Mr Fowkes. I'd like to do more WoW watercolour outdoors but I get in a bit of a tizzy trying to decide if I can keep working into damp areas or should step back for a bit and let it all dry. I'm terrified (possibly a slight exaggeration) of runbacks you see. I have looked into a cordless hair dryer or other methods of speeding up the drying process when painting plein air but nothing super practical has presented itself.

That is a great question and I’ll keep it in mind for a future video/talk. The reason I had a spray bottle the whole time in hand was this was during a particularly hot heat wave so the paint was drying faster than I could keep up with. Sometimes I want it soft and loose and I often try to concentrate the harder edges on the object of interest. One thing that kind of helps is to try to think of it in passes of value and limit the amount of values your range is. Try to see shapes as a mass of value that connects area to area and apply paint that way. Hope that helps!

Arches block. 140lb cold press. It’s 12x18. I took a 18x24 and cut it in half.

Jared...if forced to decide hypothetically which medium will you choose? Watercolour or Gouache and why? I would take up Gouache as it's easier as process although results of watercolour are stunning. I hate also the speed of watercolour

Watercolor is my main medium. There are benefits to both- although I find watercolor more immediately accessible. They’re not very alike. I liken gouache more to oil and acrylic. Gouache is very finicky and can be difficult to get used to putting down thick enough. Watercolor is easier to get into but both just take a lot of practice.

Can you please tell me what pochade box/easel you're using? I love plein air painting in watercolor, but I have a pochade box with the easel on the back side and I'm so far away from my paper that I have difficulty seeing... Your box is exactly what I have been trying to find (including literally today!), with my paper directly in front of me and my paints off to my side...

Hi Amberwing! I actually made this easel out of an old wooden briefcase and harvested parts off a broken old French easel. I should do a video on how I did it. What easel do you have? You may be able to open it all the way and lay it flat, using it as a shelf instead. There is someone in Italy making boxes like the one I use but I don’t think it’s big enough to carry my large work gear. I’ll try to find a link to share.

@@JaredCullum oh wow, that's a really cool handmade one. I would love to see a video on your rig! I have a Soho pochade box, which I really like for the space, but being so far from my painting is adding another challenge that's making it frustrating. I tried laying it flat last night after I watched your video, which works, but it's just a little awkward. I may try re-attaching the easel arms... Thank you for the information and link!

I avoid cars...as I have never been able to paint them successfully. I will give your tips a try. Your cars look great! Would you be able to activate closed captions so You Tube generates them automatically? This would be a great accessibility for those of us who are not English native speakers or have a hearing disability. Thanks in advance for your consideration!
