Advice for New DM's Part One: First Adventure

Ойындар

This is the first video in a series that I'm aiming towards people who are new to D&D. More in-depth videos will follow on NPC design, Villain design and Campaign design. May also expand on the topics I bring up in this video like Dungeon Design and Encounter design

Some other things you may want to do when you're first starting out: 1. Don't get too hung up on the rules, it's your first adventure so having fun takes precedence over following the rules. If you get bogged down in rules discussion in the first game it'll probably kill your interest or your parties' interest in the hobby 2. Give your players what they want, if they are dedicated to going to the circus instead of the dungeon then let them. Railroading your players in a direction they don't want is something you don't want to do 3. Relax and make sure you're having fun as well

Thank you for wisdom and teaching. Coworker ask me to join.... I am brand new to D&D ... like padawn.. ... when in the US Navy I was introduced to a different role playing game where we had to create our own characters as we played the normal way... but we had to live your character mentality, emotions.. yes we had now weapons or Power....we had shape your mind set in every day life...we where stuck on a naval ship... so we had to do something.....

Solid advice. Start simple without too much ambition. Doesn't even hurt if it's railroady like starting at the entrance to the dungeon or just giving a very clear objective.

I agree with you, start small and keep it simple is the best way tp built your first adventure.

Thanks for the advice. I came to this video from your 5th Ed full review. That was helpful in finally convincing me to purchase the 3 base books. Amazon (Canadian store) has a great deal right now on the base books. $36.37 each for DMG, PH, and the MM. I also enjoyed this video. Simple language really helps with turning someone on to 5th edition. The last time I played was in the mid-90s-I was early teens. I've recently wanted to see about starting a D&D group, rekindling this as a side-hobby. Almost went to Pathfinder. And now, decided to at least familiarize myself with the latest edition. Thanks again. Looking forward to more videos.

every time I run the game I always make at least one mistake or forget something, like whoops that player was restrained and I let him move without making a strength check to break free last session...and I feel embarrassed about it a bit but then I remember that was just one encounter and there will be plenty more to come

Good advice. New DMs are not ready to control the chaos of revived chicken dancers terrorizing the village that are controlled by the vile, despicable rabbitmancer. But one advice point: pop-up monsters: open the door, Surprise!

I think its definitely easier to DM if you already have at least a little experience as a player. Its almost a necessity.

Big R I agree 100%. And most people who DM tend to have some experience playing before hand. That said the transition from player to DM doesn't always go as smoothly as one would hope. My early attempts at DMing were, to put it nicely, absolutely horrendous. I tried way too hard and in the end I just didn't know what I was doing. I'd like to think I've since gotten better.

Sometimes you don't have that luxury of course so one shouldn't feel bound by this generally useful principle.

New DM? Get a pre written wotc adventure or even a Pathfinder Adventure Path one. Runelords and Crimson Throne go for 30 BUCKS in pocket edition books and feature over 500 pages of story -.- Yes, converison heavy, but WORTH it for the plots. The DMG seems to be pretty useless thus far. Having 3.5 and 4e DMG and from Pathfinder ... I cant figure out why anyone would buy this DMG if not only for the monster indexing (WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE MM, ffs) -.-
