Advice for New Cricut Crafters
Hello everyone!
It's time for me to address a few things that new crafters should be made aware of. Although, it is going to sound harsh, trust me I am coming from a place of love and doing my best to share with you in a way that is helps you on your crafting journey.
Although the title says Advice for New Cricut Crafters, this really applies to crafters in any area: Cricut, Laser Engraving, Embroidery, DTF, DTG, Sublimation, etc. I often find it necessary to share advice like this and while some may not like it, there will be others who will connect with it immediately.
Hopefully it will help you on your journey.
If so, don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to my channel.
Thanks for watching,
Bye

I believe you said what needed to be said. Also please read all the comments before asking the same thing that was already answered. Nobody should have to answer the same question over and over again. Thank you Delonda I appreciate all you do and the time and effort you put into these videos. Most all of the wonderful attitude you have.

From a recently retired educator to another former teacher, this is exactly what we work on with students. It is so easy to ask for an answer, but learning how to FIND the answer for oneself is far more beneficial. Oh, as a lifelong crafter, I always have projects I don’t finish, but I generally go back to them later! I thoroughly enjoy your videos which demonstrate your fantastic teaching skills. A+ to you!

When my 12-year-old asks me random questions about things that interest him, a lot of times I tell him to research. I have done this since he was little, by the time he was in first grade, he knew more about the Titanic then I ever did.

I agree with you. I have a friend that is constantly asking me to make things or show her how to make things with my Cricut. When I tell her how much I charge she gets quiet. She is has a business and she wants to get paid for her services and so do I, I think she feels because we are friends she thinks I should do things for her for free. I don't feel that I should just give away the knowledge that I have researched and spent countless hours on trial and error to learn.

Interesting. I've never thought of charging for assistance. When I started crafting it was engrained in me that crafters are sharers...we share knowledge, experience, time and materials. I've been crafting over 40 years and cannot think of a time when someone asked me to pay them for assistance/troubleshooting. I feel like people helped me along the way so why not give back. Curious about others' thoughts on that.

That’s why I don’t sell anything, I love being a student of the crafting world. I’m extremely tech savvy and I love all things electronic, however, it kills me when folks forget how printers work and don’t know what size paper it uses. But I love answering a lot of the questions too. So it’s bittersweet for me. But everything you said was straight facts!

I am mentally applauding you. This is literally everything I’m constantly thinking when I see these things over and over. I am amazed how often people just buy stuff and haven’t done any research too. These things are big purchases and they just buy then start asking stuff they should’ve found out if they’d actually researched the product they were buying before parting with money

As Graphic Designer from the Ad Specialites market I appreciate all the different crafting methods you share with your channel. I will admitt is easy to get distracted and want to try another media or method. I have owned some of the earliest sublimation printers. Your fans are lucky they have you to stop them from going over board. Have a great 4th of July.

Craft journal is a great idea!!! I love crafting and stopped because I started so many projects and the more research I did the more awesome things I found I liked. So I have so many u finished crafts that even ended up ruined by the time I tried to go back to them or remember the idea I had for it. Thanx for sharing!

Great advice! My favorite “Stop” is number 10. I go through phases of all sorts of crafts from making desserts for special occasions like a wedding cakes to resin to lasers to 3d printing to vinyl to screen printing all in the same week😮 When I plan and make a to do list, my projects turn out so much better and it keeps the gray out of my hair. Trello is a great online project tool. Not only does it help me stay on task it also (for me) stores past projects making it an “archive “ Thanks again for keeping it real. Happy crafting

Number 10 - Let's stop starting without finishing. Just yesterday I was saying to my writing partner, "I've gotten way away from my purpose for initially purchasing my Cricut Maker 3." I decided to refocus my efforts on going back and completing what I started, so this video is right on time as confirmation that I'm making the right decision. Thanks for taking time to "bless us out" really well! 🙂🙂

And I'm quite sure she's not talking about those type of questions. She's referring to the the type of beginner questions that get asked 100000 million times in the groups that can easily answer your question by scrolling through the groups to look or using the search feature in the Facebook groups and typing the same question and you'll see tons if post pop up with the same question being answered over and over. She not referring to more intricate questions that Google won't fully explain or answer

Everything you said had me nodding my head. The Bible says, we have not because we ask not and I believe that. Let me start here, if someone doesn't want to share what they know or what they have they are completely free to say no however, that doesn't mean people should not ask. People just want to get started and do good. Sis, the things that you are telling people to STOP asking you should probably say STOP asking you, you can not speak for everyone. Most of the things stated in this video are based on your opinion. I have watched you from a humble beginning to become somewhat arrogant. Your facial expressions and your talking points as you give your opinion to veiwers is a little sarcastic. I've watched videos where you have messed up (which is ok) and no one has said to you, Stop making how to videos if you don't know how to. I just thought this was unnecessary and the fact that you kept saying the word offended made me know you were aware that you were offensive. We are to encourage one another because no one is perfect. I just feel that if your goal was to help, you could have delivered your message a better way. If I was a new Cricut user I would be discouraged. God has blessed you to enlarge your crafting space, to have free items sent to you, to connect with people that are guru's in crafting that you didn't know and who didn't know you in the beginning of your journey, and the Lord has increased your audience but we are to always remain humble .... remember that we are blessed to be a blessing!

@@CraftingwithDelondaI grit my teeth the whole time I watched this video. Not because I disagreed with the sentiments but because of the tone and it didn’t sound like you. I have a saying and it is “Don’t paint the world with your brush.” By that, I mean empathy is key. You are educated and possess a level of experience. You are an educator and as educators we educate instead of rebuke. It hurt my heart to see someone say they were discouraged by your video because it means they were unable to hear your heart. I believe one of the barriers was that every phrase started with stop. “Stop asking for svgs”and “if you can’t afford an svgs you should not be crafting.“ Yikes! What if crafting is keeping them alive and it’s the only thing positive in their life? I’d rather be asked. Luke 6:38 Give and it shall be given to you. A good measure, pressed down shaken together and running over, will be poured in your lap. FOR WITH THE MEASURE YOU USE, IT WILL BE MEASURED TO YOU. James 4:2 You have not, because you ask not. Without going through every point, the “advice” doesn’t seem to take into account the abilities or inabilities of certain groups of people. If you are ten toes on your video then I respect it. My goal was not to tell you you’re wrong but perhaps introduce a different perspective for thought. Thank you for all you do.

I was scrolling through random videos and was mostly disinterested until I hit this one. (killing time between appointments) I loved it. Every one of the tips resonated. They were delivered a little tongue-in-cheek that made me smile because they're true. Humor softens the delivery. I could elaborate on each point, but you did that quite nicely, no need to re-hash. PS Love your shirt and that tumbler! PPS My new favorite quote 'Comparison is the thief of Joy" Definitely going to do a journal page with that one Thank you!

Everything is a “phase”. 3 years ago everyone was jumping on the resin glitter tumblers. Then it went to cricut infusion now it’s sublimation. It will pass. People think it’s a quick. Buck to make stuff do it. Few times then get order for the whole football team and have no clue what they are into, how to price it including g their time. Not to mention the biggest question I see is licensing issues . You’re right about selling stuff when they have made 1 thing.

Great and spot on! I also create in glass and belong to some groups. I share a lot of tips etc., but it’s an irritating seeing some folks that see a photo of what you made and the immediate reaction is to ask for a tutorial. Some things I can’t share as I paid for a class or a book and that isn’t fair to the teacher/author. But I also spend a lot of time experimenting and planning etc. and find it easy to look at some things and think about how it might have been made and then try to do my own version. But there’s always the people that don’t even try to think it through or put their own spin on it. Nope, they just want a recipe and step by step instructions.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings in this video. You were very polite. I definitely needed to hear all 10, but the one that I needed to hear the most was #10. I am bad at planning crafts. I collect so I have what I need when I see or think of something I want to do. If I would plan a craft and write it down, I may not look like I'm hoarding materials in my craft building. Thank you again, and God bless you.

It has always been my #1 gripe to know that I can do the research and learn how to do something and then turn around and be accused of gatekeeping because I don't want to teach others. Its not gatekeeping its self reliance. I wanted to know so I learned and so can you. Thanks again, it was all so very well said.

I will put you in my prayers and hope that you see what is wrong with this video. I watch KZread change people all of the time as they become irritated by their subscribers, followers, community, whatever they have built. Annoyed by the people who may have assisted in one's success. It is not always what you say, but how you say it. Think Gal. 5:22-23. Insulting the misuse of someone's words was unnecessary because you do not know their story. I sell many things that I just learned to make. Why is that wrong to you? It is not rocket science. There are people who ask a lot of questions. It can actually save time and does not mean that they do not know how to research. There are people who share everything. It is fine if you are not one of those people. You can just kindly say that you do not feel comfortable sharing someone else's work and keep moving. I hope that you get the results that you want out of this video.

Ok....let me say what also needs to be said. I have been a subscriber to your channel from just about the very beginning. When you were just starting your channel, you were very humble and sweet and informative. You were also on a learning journey. Which was one of the reasons i enjoyed watching and learning along with you and everyone else. You always said that you are here to share your knowledge and the things that you have learned with your viewers. You always said that selling merchandise was not then, nor ever would be your intent. However, now that you have reached over 100 thousand viewers, your intent certainly has changed. You are pushing a new machine every month. Cutting machines, heat-press machines, tumbler presses, engraving machines, embroidery machines, on and on and on. I have been guilty of purchasing a few of those machines myself. (That i really don't need.) But i just can't keep up any longer. No one can afford to buy all the stuff you are pushing. The reason YOU have all this STUFF is because you receive it all for free from the companies you are pushing it for. It's not just the machines. It's all the other STUFF you are pushing, like that HTV vinyl. Does it really matter what someone calls it? I'll bet my last buck that TecWrap Craft and all the other vendors don't care what anyone calls it. As long as you keep pushing and people keep buying. So lets be honest, shall we? You are getting paid very well for putting out content EVERY SINGLE WEEK! So your viewers should be able to make what THEY want with the STUFF they have purchased. Say what THEY want, while we still have a free country and if they want to spell something wrong let them, its not costing you anything. In your words (YOU DO YOU) let everyone else do them. And, really, Delonda, who are you to tell someone what they can and can not SELL and when they are ready. You are the one on here every week encouraging people to do just that. I am very confused with your little rant. I liked the sweet, humble Delonda much better. Where did she go? Im done!

Well said! You had me lol’ing at the “sell vs sale” piece. It’s fine if someone speaks a certain way or what have you. But the incorrect word on an item just ruins the whole project. And regarding svgs, there’s so much work and time that goes into creating those. The creator needs the acknowledgment and compensation. Sharing is not caring sometimes.

I freaking love you. You are beautiful inside and out, and this video proves it. I think the same things when I see some folk's comments. Before we bought anything, I spent countless hours doing research. We have a Cricut Maker 3, two lasers, a white toner printer, a sublimation printer, clay, silicone molds, ornaments, all sorts of jewelry making "stuff". I sell only to family and friends. It is ALL perfectly imperfect, and they know it. And my favorite currency is "Love, Hugs, and Kisses". Our favorite use of all the toys we have is having friends, family, neighbors come craft with us. They pay me for the supplies and make what they want. It's a pretty sweet setup. Thankful and blessed to have a husband that supports all my crazy crafting exploits. You just keep doing you!!! You're killing it! We love you!

I purchased the very first cricut in like 2005 and have been cricutting ever since so let me tell you... every point you made needed to be said! Can I add a number 11? Some content creators must make new crafters feel like they need EVERY tool that is out there. You don't need a special weeding container in order to use your cricut. 99% of projects can be made using a green mat just fine. In fact... cricut used to make only a green mat.

Well said Delonda. I watched this video because I find you to be so pleasant. Your title caught my attention and I thought, who did it Delonda? The one that spoke to me was finishing what you start. I’m still a beginner in all things SVG crafting but like you said, I became tired of sewing on a begintermediate curve and saw a shirt and thought I want to do that. Now I have realized before purchasing a clam heat press that this is not my heart’s love. Thank you for saying what needed to be said.

First, (random thought) you have beautiful skin! I find when i research a question myself 9 out of 10 times, I have a better understanding from the start and do a better job. I found a couple of these things you said kind of petty but I am a person who enjoys helping others. The SVG's was a great topic for a couple of reasons, 1, when some posts an "svg" it isn't really an svg! It is a jpg or png, etc. Most people do not know what a in svg actually is. Also, someone took the time to create an svg or image, they deserve to be compensated for their work. By sharing those images or files, people are essentially stealing from someone else. Lastly, while some people didn't like this video, I think it is good because it opens discussions and that is how we all begin to learn. Thank you!
