Brian, I gotta say thank you. When I was facing a forced career change I started back toward my child hood dream of trucking. We spoke a few times in here in the past and I wanted to thank you for all your videos and information. I got my class A last week and I start Monday training to flat bed with a decent sized locally owned company. So this drink is to you! Thank you!

Good tips Brian. I also would tell new drivers before getting your CDL. Go to Diesel mechanic school. Especially if you have goals of being an o/o. I wish I did.

Also, watching the market is good so you know how your employer is doing in the current economic cycle. One of the greatest thing that you emphasize is the cyclical nature of the trucking industry. Awesome tips! I work for a Peterbilt dealership, and I am AMAZED how many truck owners call on a regular basis asking for filters for their trucks by giving me a VIN# each time! Why don't these guys keep a file on their trucks with part numbers for their filters??? Why depend on the guy on the other side of the counter to "look up" the filter and possibly sell the wrong one?? I see it DAILY! ALSO, they buy only ONE filter of each, instead of at least 2 to keep on their shelves! They call in, wait about 20 to 40 minutes on the phone to place filters on will call. Come in to the store, spend sometimes AN HOUR just to pick up these filters that they will buy AGAIN in one month, and do this vicious cycle again! Boggles my mind!

I got a tip for you, get a heat gun laser heat gun from O'Reilly's to check the tires on your duels when you going down the road. I thought when you stop to get fuel if you hit the laser on each tire, if one's hotter it slower on pressure safe easy way to check your stuff on the road

Hardcore facts !

All great tips! One thing I did to improve my mpg was to switch to AMSOIL synthetic and add an OPS-1 bypass oil filter. I gained about 1 mpg and since the bypass filters the oil down to one micron, my oil stays cleaner longer. Instead of doing a PM every 15-20k miles, I do one at 50k miles, changing the bypass filter at 25k. I have over 1.4 million miles on my Cummins ISX and there is still virtually no lost compression coming through the blowback tube. Not only do I save on fuel, I save on PM’s (I still have the chassis lubed at about 20k, just no oil change) because for every 3 PM’s that drivers who use conventional oil have done, I have only one. I made the switch about four years ago and I am so glad that I did.

@@scottbulach not just changing oil types but also adding a bypass filter as well. With a normal PM, you start out with clean oil and it gets progressively dirtier as it approaches the 15-20k mark, and then you change it. Obviously, your engine runs the best right after the PM when you have your new oil at its cleanest. With a bypass filter, the oil is filtered by the conventional filter first (I use an AMSOIL extended life filter for the full 50k miles.) and then it goes through the bypass filter where it is filtered down to 1 micron, which really cleans the oil as you’re going down the road. By running clean oil through your engine constantly, it gets better mpg. My truck was getting about 6.3 to 6.9 mpg with conventional oil. Now I get 7 to 8 mpg, which really adds up over time. Plus, the wear and tear on my engine’s internal moving parts is significantly reduced. Try it yourself, you’ll see...

@@SoCal780 I’m not saying your wrong. I’m on the fence of buying one and prolly will but I just don’t believe it adds 1mpg no offense but that’s huge . If that was the case I would see a huge drop in fuel mileage from beginning of oil oil change to end. I’m always testing different oil and additives so I’ll give the ops a try.

@@scottbulach I got you. At the very least you will extend the life of your engine. It’s always better to run cleaner oil through it. Also, you’ll save money on PNM’s because you won’t have to do them as often. Using synthetic oil is a big plus too.

Never go to FL or CA? There’s little freight coming out of those states. Montana is tough to get a backhaul from. I’m a recovering truck driver and a broker now. I quote sky high on those lanes because who wants to get stuck in those places? I’ll take Truckstop or DAT double it and add my charge. I’m putting money on it because experienced drivers are going to see it on the load boards and they aren’t going to touch it if they can’t make money. I already know that my rate is going to turn off a lot customers but that’s to bad. I have one particular customer who always goes with the “broker” who lives in his Mom’s basement. The next day, the load(s) fall off because they aren’t real brokers. Not great lanes either. My best lane recently was Elkhart, Indiana to Dallas. I capitalized on that and the drivers got paid really well and were home for Thanksgiving. They called operations looking for more of those loads but I can’t always come up with those. Those loads were on the load boards less than three minutes and were covered. I don’t double broker. Whoever takes my loads is paid in three to five business days. What the gentleman is saying in this video is 100% correct. Know your lanes. Anything Mississippi River and East is likely profitable. Most of the business I see starts around Milwaukee and follows the Great Lakes through Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Upstate New York but Kentucky and Tennessee and Missouri aren’t bad either. Texas is a dream. The most profitable lane is Chicago to Houston or vice versa. Just don’t get stuck in Wyoming or hung up in the Rockies in winter. Good luck! Drive safe.

Do your maintenance on your truck when you're home it'll save you a bunch of money. It's a lot cheaper than having a breakdown on the road your second day out. Do your maintenance at home

The revenue per mile paradigm is outdated especially on the east coast where miles are short and congestion burns time. Convert your numbers into revenue per day and factor utilization

Make sure you clean the 7th injector tip.

Don’t take your truck to the big dealers, they are a bunch of scammers, my mechanic just rebuild my isx for $9000, try that at Peterbilt or KW you will get ripped for at least 30k, find a local mechanic stick to it.

Well, think about it. A shop has to pay for parts, shipping of those parts, and stocking of those parts. Not to mention, MECHANICS. Of course it’s expensive through a shop, these experienced guys with 20 years under their belts making 30+ an hour working on your truck are gonna get paid what they’re worth. Of course some guy on the side can do it cheaper, he doesn’t have dealer resources

He’s said in the past that Mercer was good, but if he could do it over he would just go straight to Landstar.

I wish i never purchased my used Freightliner. It has a shudder problem to expensive to diagnose and repair cannot afford it. When applying gas, between 15-45 it gives a shudder.

Can you tell us which mechanics you trust?

I've seen you mention the trustworthy mechanic several times now.... HOW exactly does one do that? trial and error?

10k? I'd say 30k minimum. Never know when you'll need an inframe. Most expensive repair, so should have that in your savings at all times MINIMUM! I just had to replacevmy front axle and spindles. Cost me 11k.

Why do drivers put ceilings on their money and focus solely on RPM? Listening to the profitability part sounds like $3 per mile is some outrageous crazy number.

I am looking to get into trucking. Can you tell me about paid CDL training that some companies offer. I have looked into Shneider, Steven transport, Fortworth CDL school. All these offers paid CDL. I not sure how the contract with them works. Fortworth CDL school promises 1st year employee can make $70,000 (Is this true?). I want to do solo driving. I need your opinion how should I start in this career. (I live in Houston TX. I am willing to move.) Thanks.

Ok if you are living in Houston there is stevens transport. It’s easy however have a game plan to pay off the loan and get out within 6 months of stevens. They are a trash company and will brain wash there drivers. I know nothing of shneider. Cr England you would definitely team I hear good things about prime

@@Daniel-ug8fd if I’m being honest (I’m a Freightliner dealer mechanic out of Cleveland) the new P4 Cascadia is very tech savvy and very ground oriented. A lot can get screwed up if someone “takes a swing” at trying to fix it. I’d suggest velocity in Nashville. They don’t upsell extra work. Plus your truck is under warranty, you won’t want to mess with Detroit after treatment if you have to pay for it. For now just stick to dealer
