My friend Kieth and Tiana went out to do a fun photoshoot. I'm all about hanging out with other creatives to see how they work and to learn and grow from them. The images from this shoot turned into more commercial advertising photography and lifestyle photography. I feel these images could fit well for activewear or health and beauty advertisements or billboards.
Keith was using all natural light. I'm using the sun and a Godox AD400Pro with a 42 inch octabox.

you guys both take great shots. i like yours a tad more just because with flash it gets this more sharper, punchy, colorfull and overall just super professional look. not saying kieths pics dont look professional, but a flash adds this extra layer to it imo. love the channel mate

Thank you! I’ve always been a fan of off camera lighting for the exact same reasons! But, I always admire people like Keith who know how to work with available light so well. :)

When it comes down to natural light photography and flash photography… hands downs I would always go with flash photography! It’s really no comparison Austin! You have the advantage of stop motion and color tones that just makes it all that goodness come to life! No blown out background if you meter for the background and adding just enough fill light to enhance those colors! Great session my friend!

Same here. I feel like strobes give the images just a bit more sharpness than natural light does. Thanks for watching, man!

Fantastic work guys, great shots in there! I would have loved to see Keith implament a big reflector to fill the shadows just a little bit, I think it could have really taken them to a whole new level. Alas, easier said than done when we're out here shooting without an assistant.

Hey! I normally do shot the cameras settings. But, with this video I didn’t have Keith’s settings, so I left them out. We talk a bit about our settings at the end. And for me, I was at ISO 100 and Shutter 1/200th. Hopefully that helps a bit.

  • @austinlindsay

Hey, sorry for the late response. Shallow depth of field and higher shutter speeds are always handy for movement and sports. But, it’s hard to give specific settings without knowing exactly what type of imagery you’re going for.

Austin, I have the 50 and 70-200 and Im planning to do a similar shoot. I know you were at 7.1-16 but around what speed were you shooting and if you don't mine, about what power were you on with you light? I will likely use a second light since I may not have as much sunlight to use a rim. Thanks!

  • @austinlindsay

Hey! I checked the metadata for the camera. I was shooting anywhere from 1/125th to 1/2000th of a second. So I was all over the place. I’m guessing it was the same with light power. Generally I try and put that info on the images, but in this video I didn’t have Keith’s info, so I decided to forgo it altogether. Sorry, I can’t be of more help on info for this shoot. The best advice I can give is to expose for your ambient light, since that’s what you have the least control over, then fill in with flash till you get an overall exposure that you’re happy with.

  • @austinlindsay

I’ll have to look through the raws to know for sure. As a general rule, I usually try and stay pretty low on ISO whenever I can. But as the sun was setting I’m sure I raise the ISO so just a little bit to compensate during the shoot.
