I strongly believe, minimalism is the future. It’s the only way to save the planet and save ourselves.

Love this Ted Talk! I wish I could get up the nerve to do this too. I am a minimalist. When people come to my apartment they always ask me if I just moved in or if I was robbed.

Proud to be a minimalist and it never occurred that my mind needed to be de-cluttered too!

Mari-Chu Coria of course you can absolutely my saying that I came up with myself is this cluttered house cluttered mind your soul and spirit will never be at peace or calm it will always be Reeling for thoughts faster than a locomotive as they say you will never be able to find anything at a moment's notice when somebody calls you to go out anywhere even to the grocery store you'll be looking for your house keys all day also if it's in your storage unit quote on quote you do not need it big. Big capital letters
I am going to become a minimalist today.

The one thing I have to comment on is that when minimalism leads to being reliant on other people's stuff (i.e. a "bum") it is no longer impressive to me. Minimalism should be self-reliant so that you are more empowered to contribute. If you throw everything away but then immediately are like, "Dude, can I borrow that?" then I think you have taken it too far. Ultimately what Marty is sharing here is great, I just wanted to make that observation.

I agree with your observation. I am slightly troubled by suggestion made in many minimalist talks and articles of staying and living at friends or families or generous strangers. Some how I feel that there is confusion over the definition of minimalism. To me it is about not accumulating too much. It is definitely not about becoming reliant on others and burdening them (can be felt as such). This talk seems to me more about a journey of not owning much and living humbly by depending on others, which in many cultures can be perceived as a journey of a monk. It does not to me talk about minimalism.

You don't know minimalists, you know cheapskates. I am a minimalist, I owe no one nothing, and I take nothing from everyone. I pay 2k in rent and live alone. Minimalism is so I can have what i want, if you do it to be cheap, you are cheap, end of story
@johnmonk66

@@urvashisharma4254 You are 100% correct. Minimalism is about having what YOU need, not saving every penny and stealing from others. I live in a luxes condo because I am a minimalist, i ask nothing from anyone, because real minimalist do it to be self reliant and happy, not to become misers and save every penny.

Totally agree with the comments related to "exploiting" others, but borrowing can be a vital part to a minimalist life-style... if it is reciprocal... some things, like tools that are necessary only occasionally, can be better shared...
@76onaps

but dont we all rely on other peoples stuff regardless? we borrow from our friends and families regardless of our situation in life, but that doesnt mean we are "bums". this observation is totally irrelevant to the main message, it takes away from the positive message, i think the speaker deserves a better critique than this
My first journey to minimalism started with getting rid of smoking and Facebook. What came back was so much better. I got promoted and now I started crossfit. I feel so much better

I am now putting more money in my 401 k then ever before . I will be retiring a lot earlier than I previously thought possible . I am plan on traveling as a minimalist , all over the world .... I loved your insights, Marty. Thank you for your courage, resilience, and generosity in sharing the insights in living a lifestyle devoted to minimalism.
Respect from India brother... really the concept of minimalizm is applied it can really simplify our lives.. Once while on Journey I just spoke to to some strangers "The more we posses, more possessed we become "
I feel like change my diet really changed my life, I see a lot of things differently now, I am on my way to become minimalism.

this kind of life would be nothing for me, i am too sensitive for this kind of excitement "where will i sleep tonight?" but i am absolutely following your minimalist advice on every other part of life. very very inspiring speech! :D
Great talk! I discovered I've been exploring some kinds of minimalism in my life without knowing it ;-) I will continue this journey towards happiness. Thanks
For me, it’s not time that I need to be happy. I’m happy when I am doing the things that are fun. Time for me has nothing to do with it. For me there is enough time in a day let alone a lifetime. It’s a matter of being grateful for what you do have and using that time wisely. God Bless us all 🥰😇

Very inspiring! I have made many changes in my own life as due course for minimalism. My next step will be going homeless. To anyone who is on the fence or perhaps just scared (which is natural; I'm scared too!) of the consequences of minimizing their lives just know that it is a spiritual and truly liberating experience. You will begin to appreciate things on a much deeper level.

Very inspiring. I guess this is the first TEDx talk I never get bored in the middle of the speech. I just couldn't pause and return back to continue watching. His adventures and experience actually convinced me he is truly a minimalist and understands the mindset and the message beyond minimalism.
'Minimalism of the mind' This I need!
Wow, that was beautiful.
He’s got it right. Love this. ❤️
Beautiful and inspirational
Duuuude- inspiration right here :D it's awesome how ppl who find minimalism usually find veganism or become plant based OR the other way round
Most inspiring ✨️ 🙌 🙏
what a beautiful soul
Honestly, this is one of best minimalism videos. In a lot of videos, people would emphasise on getting rid of materialistic things but no one introduced the concept of mental and emotional decluttering.
Beyond brilliant!!
such an awesome speech. thank you for having the courage to go on your adventure and share your wisdom with the world.
Muchas gracias. Saludos desde Chile
Quality topic and talk. Thanks for sharing. Would say our 'home' is not in the mind, but in the core. Our 'essence' or 'consciousness'.
DUDE! Wow! I need to watch this for reminders on what life is about. Spot on!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this!🙏🏽👊🏽❤️
Thank you so much, for this wonderful video.

amazing video! thank you so much...I needed to hear this!
Exactly what I needed to hear in those dark times im goig through right now, I want to go backpacking Europe first in à tent and hitchiking. Sometimes when you r far from where you problems are you feel à New person ! Like the Weight on your shoulders has been lifted
Thanks Marty. There are so many points in your talk, what my intuition was guessing like being the right thing to do, and I .. didn't listen. I got carried on by environment and ppl.. Now I ve realized I was right all this time. Happiness is not something you have to aim for is about living it. Not caring about friends and ppl telling you aaa you don t have that, you re poor. Well I visited the entire world, let s see who s poor now? :))
Deeply thought provoking!
inspiring, Marty
Another really awesome speaker with fantastic experiences and ideas.
Excellent way of thinking and I have slowly started practicing this own realm of thought!!
Minimalism of thought. Something new I learner today! Thanks
Keep inspiring, Marty!
Wonderful!
it is so inspiring, thank you!
WOW! It pays so much to declutter. My aunt lost an SD card with a bunch of old photos on it about 3 years ago. She was sad and kept asking us if we had it. I've been decluttering these past 4 days, and I got to my bins with some bags and a sheet in it. I took everything out and saw at the bottom a little SD card. I thought "Could it be?", and turned on my computer, plugged in the card, opened the folder and VOILA! I can't want to tell her!!
What a beautiful message !
Great talk! I really liked your comments about how your mind is where Home is!
Impressive and profound, thanks very much, Martin!

trying to live with less is a lot of hardwork
I think minimalism is great for college students. Live minimally until u can find work u love. Or if life happens
Awesome vid!
amazing advicew,
Gratitude in survival!
A daily question ; is it a need or a want. Pretty much sums it up.
Kinda ironic. I came up with a saying a couple of years ago. ( The mare you can live without, the more you'll have ) I came up with this when I started to live well off and below my means. Get less, keep less, want less made me feel more free of burdens. I have more money less stress. I'm free ! Minimalism is the best redefinition of less is more.
insightful........
Awesome
Give one thing you don't use to someone who can use it ... help and happiness! So much in American not being used and would change someone else's life or day!!

Hope Sands I totally agree plus the camera man must be from a grade school he totally sucks he sure won't get a degree or an award except aggravating me and making me more irritated and harder to concentrate on anything that guy said plus he seemed really out of it in a way and I agree with the other comments if he's a minimalist why didn't they just get his even a small little apartment or a studio where he could just have his own place even if there is nothing in it
❤❤❤❤
great video!
Look at the material things you have and ask yourself..do I really need it? I've been a minimilist for 10 years renting with only the things I really need. It feels good. Example..I run everyday with the same apparel and trainers...wash it..go again. I love that gear and when I replace that shirt..it means sth. Get rid of that excess bagage..tomorrow is what matters.
Some of what Marty says is obvious. If you have less stuff then you have fewer things to manage, maintain and distract you. I am interested in the spiritual side of minimalism. Perhaps passions flourish in the absence of distractions?
