Adventure Time Review: S9E10 - Abstract

Фильм және анимация

A lesson on abstract art and life! Jake’s manages to revert from his monstrous blue appearance by accepting the stuff about himself that he fears and understanding that people are constantly changing beings. While no answers about the mysterious blue creature that impregnated Jake’s dad were given (if anything, we now have more questions), this episode’s focus was an the internal character development, and it was carried out wonderfully.

I may be alone in this, but I absolutely loved seeing Jermaine again. Given the general goofy and ridiculous nature of the series as a whole, it was so refreshing to see a grounded, responsible character, if only for contrast. I'm glad the show gave him not only a reappearance, but some engrossing character development.

I love seeing Jermaine, too, as he's also Finn's brother, and even though Finn didn't interact with him in this episode, like other comments said, it gives a nice insight into their childhood and backstories.

The why Finn responded to Jake's new form really reminded me of how he acted in Chips and Ice Cream. In both episodes, Jake was changed physically, but was still the same person and didn't really care, but Finn was disturbed and tried not to show it.

Finn was the most immature of the brothers but he's only just 16 so there's that. Finn cannot handle change well yet wether it's physical or emotional. He can't even handle the changes in his bodies himself like what he did in fire and ice (implying finn is experiencing wet dreams). Jermaine easily connected with Jake since he is now free of the stress he built himself and he has always loved his brothers unconditionally. Finn is the same but he has yet to mature the same way as Jermaine or Jake. We see that both Jake and Jermaine are enlightened individuals with jermaine only being few floors below Zen with their parents while Jake is in the zen floor in the afterlife. Finn is in the 37th floor which isn't not bad too.

Lady Rainicorn being completely ok with Jake’s new form is one of the cutest things that has ever happened in this show. I know she’s the mother of his kids, but it’s still super sweet to see it completely unphase her 🙂❤️

I know this was a bit of a contested episode but it's honestly one of my favourite adventure time episodes. It liked the resolve itself and I really feel it fleshed out Jake, Jermaine and their relationship with their father. "Dad warned me you might go through some changes. He told me to be supportive, but I would have done that anyway." For me this wasn't so much a problem resolution episode as a character and relationship development episode.

The “Everything Stays” theme seems to apply to all the characters and is a running theme of all of the later seasons. It started with Marcy and PB in Stakes, BMO after defeating AMO, Finn after Hall of Egress, and now Jake. They all slowly realize how they are all dynamic characters always changing a bit on the inside with each adventure

Jermaine's simplistic dream isn't as simplistic as you might think him Kai ting abstract art simbalizes he has control over his dreams people whom have control over their dreams usually live happy lives because there living their dreams hes doing what he enjoys doing asleep and awake.

On the topic of Jake's dad in the dream, I think it can be safely assumed that the reason he begins to take on numerous features that the alien has is a sign of Jake's muddled relationship with his dad. As we've been told, Jake's dad keeps secrets from his children, and it was Jermaine who was chosen to continue the legacy of Joshua's work. This could be a sign that Jake feels alienated (pun intended) from his dad, but he continues to perceive him as this amazing person as seen when Finn and Jake reminisce in memories of their dad when they search for the demon blood sword, putting Joshua on top of this pedestal of awesomeness. This could also be one of those inside problems Jake explains that he's been ignoring. He wants to think of his dad as his own dad, but with the knowledge of his dad simply being a host for the alien, he feels separated from his dog-self. He loses his own self image since he always saw himself as Jake the Dog, not Jake the Alien. This can be explained as in his dream he first pictures himself in his yellow form until he is reminded of who he truly is by the alien's touch. I think your explanation of the quote, "I can almost walk the dog," was pretty dead on. Joshua couldn't quite connect to his kids, since you'd imagine walking the dogs in a family of dogs would seem almost ubiquitous. The yo-yo's might represent something different though. Notice how the toy is very much like a boomerang in where it always comes back. This means the toy can carry the connotation of a moment in the past that is coming back to effect the present, a regression to an older state of mind, or an unchanging pattern. When he first sees his dad in the dream he recognizes that his dad never changed his odd ways since his dad was consistently hiding things from him, represented by the yo-yo trick that Joshua performs. The lack of change Jake saw in his father is weird to him, which is why he's mesmerized by the trick until Jermaine gets his attention. Jake nearly worships his father, so he only sees him as this one dimensional person that raised him, a symbol of perfection almost. When Joshua looks like an alien, however, the yo-yo's don't move. They are stationary, or Jake's view of his dad has changed. Because when Jake sees his alien dad, he's looking at a different man, no longer the loving dad he idolized, but rather a mysterious being with a connection to himself. Jake can't handle the idea of a change in his view towards the person he looked up to so much, so he screams again before waking up, unwilling to come to terms with the change. Great review by the way, can't wait for the next four!

I always took that scene to mean that subconsciously, Jakes knows Joshua isn't his father. That his genetic memory knows that blue thing is his father. Hence why Joshua (the father who raised him, but actually is his mother) took the characteristics of his real father.

When you said Jake was more concerned about internal change I immediately thought of when we first met Magic Man and he transformed Finn into a foot. Jake really wanted to be one and edged Finn on to keep being a foot and expresses his disappointment in not being one himself. Also in Jake the Brick being a brick in a wall that's gonna fall was some kind of mental change to him that he felt he had to experience but instead watched nature and probably became more connected to the world.

This episode means a lot to me. I was coming to terms with my genderfluidity, I was in my 22 and I knew I wasn’t happy as a girl, I secretly lived as a boy for 2 years because I thought I could be trans but I realised I wouldn’t be happier as a boy, so thought “guess I’ll just be unhappy then”. The phrase “as long as I know the shape of my soul, I’ll be alright” got me through a lot of dark times and gave me the strength to leave my homophobic family unit at age 24. I’ve got a found family now and it’s wonderful, I’m different but the same.

Two thoughts: 1.) What you say around 0:20 how Adventure Time has these big story arcs quickly resolve where "things sort of but not really return to the status quo" struck me as so relevant to this episode, which literally ends by saying "different yet the same". This episode was definitely a microcosm of all these types of stories and the entire way AT tells it's stories. 2.) At 5:08 you say Jake is strapped to an operating table reminiscent of an alien abduction, but considering the "operating table" is a stone slab that jake is tied to with regular rope, the goblet of wine/blood, bird skull, foot, and feathers at the bottom of the table ... it really reminded me more of some sort of ancient sacrificial table (ala the aztecs: genelempp.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/sacrificial-stone2.gif). This would make even more sense considering the scene before was some sort of ancient culture worshiping the statue with skulls under it. Kind of like the setup of a ritual to make a sacrifice to their god.

Some comments on this, first of all, reference to 9 muses from greek mythology, as you probably already noticed, secondly, i believe the vampire fear comes from the fact that his father was bitten by something that resembles a vampire in some aspects, this is even foreshadowed by both dreams, depending on paternal role in orb, and by jake perceptions in abstract

at first one I saw the end of the episode I was one of them that didn't appreciate Jake going back to his old form, especially after the revelation that no matter the form he's still him. But after some thinking I realized why wouldn't he be able to revert back to his old self. That form is apart of him just as the blue one. I wish they did it in a way to show that he transformed; a off screen sound to indicate morphing or something would've really seal the deal that Jake can or will have more control over his new form and powers.

Where can I find the instrumentals for this episode? The music feels so calm, yet haunting. It reminds me of the theme of Abstract, the calmness making you feel as though everything will remain still and stay the same, but is accompanied by the looming presence meaning that there will be change or that change has recently happened.

I really did like this episode. I recently realized that I really appreciate impressionist art and so to see it in a cartoon was really fun. I like the reminder that people can be different and the same, because that is indeed the most accurate representation of what a sentient person is: A being that changes and develops as they learn new information and react to new problems, but holds onto its past and predispositions.

A different version of me watching probably would have disliked this episode(it's so weird!), but ever since I found this channel and actually looked more deeply into Adventure Times I can say that I really enjoyed it! I liked the pacing and the character development for Jake. Usually I am so lost while watching episodes like this. There has been something building up for him for awhile now and with the Elements mini series I wanted to see what it all came to. For me this episode did that nicely.

I took Jake turning back as an abstract way of saying he changed because he wasn't sure if he was the same and had a mini crisis about it as people kept acting differently around him. when he changed back to normal it showed that he was still the same person and focusing on who he was only distracting himself from who he really was. Just be you.

I thought, this is Jake now. He's not going to return to normal and I'm going to have to accept that fact. Maybe he'll look normal again sometime later, but right now I have to accept and adapt. Then the episode ended... well, this simultaneously puts me at ease and disappoints me. I was expecting a change. I wanted this show to push people out of their comfort zones and have to open up to something akin to this. I guess that's just not what they were going for. P.S. I love your videos

what I liked about this episode, coming from a fan of the series who recently just finished the show( this was my childhood cartoon back then but took me a while to come back and finish every ep) this was my favorite. Being in my 20s and experiencing life changes, It's such a comfor for me to have seen this episode, the show literally grew up with you. I didn't expect a show to be so comforting as random and goofy as this show started. will be forever obsessed with adventure time

You do such great work! :D & I've always wondered about Jermaine and Finn's Relationship? Also, I heard back in 2015 an IGN article said they were in the works for a Movie? And Pen confirmed? I was sorta pondering on a question, basicly when the shapeshifter bit joshua he birthed jake, but he did not sientificly give birth. Does this make jake a clone of his dad infused with the shapeshifter blood?

I noticed a parallel and a juxtaposition in this episode. Between how in both Hall of Egress and this episode the involvement of the the other brother (Finn or Jake) only served as a hindrance and only when one of the brothers chose to tough it out on their own did they make any real progress towards solving their problems. The juxtaposition here is this at the end of this episode Jake going to his other brother actually did solve the problem. It seems that only when Jake went to Finn (and vice versa) did they fail. It could be interesting to see what would happen if another episode is made where Finn is facing a new problem and how Finn handles it. Whether Finn goes straight to Germaine or if Jake experiences makes him more able to help or if Jake still seems to hinder Finn. And analyze what that means for each character as a symbol to one another.

In addition to what you said about drastic change I would also add that we should keep in mind that this is a children's tv show. While it doesn't feel like that most of the time at its core it is, and because of that there's going to be more of an easy to digest over and done feel to it. (Yes there are the miniseries, but they're basically movie length if you add them all together.)

I just watched this ep for thr first time and I knew jake would return quickly. It was cool seeing how afew people reacted to it. But in the end it was about how jake felt about it and his fear but how he knew in the end he will be OK. As its OK to look different but still be the same inside.

I do definitely appreciate the subject matter as well as the introspection and character development for Jake, however, I feel like this would have been an interesting story opportunity to say the least. I personally feel like this would have led to a much greater storyline in which we'd see Jake learning of and grappling with his origin as well as why his parents would keep this and potentially many other secrets from him. I dunno, it just seems like a missed opportunity that I feel the AT crew would have done an excellent in tackling had they decided to go that route. That being said though, I did come to like this episode a bit more than I did initially, because I found myself to be really harsh on it at first. Also, side nitpick: I feel like the episode kind of rushed through everyone's perspectives on his new form. I get it, the episode is primarily about his development, but I wish there was a bit more to the scenes with everyone outside of "oh you're different, Jake".

Can you make a video only about Jake's dream and the huge amount of taco? Sure it may seem just some Illuminati-kind of joke (giving an apparent deeper meaning to something pointless and not meaningful at all), but how AT crew hide some hints here and there, I feel like it might have something else. One thing I can relate, is the moment Jake use a telescope to view far away and suddenly disappear from his hand. In dream, I often feel holding on something, just to later on the dream it changed into something else or vanish and my dreamself doesn't even question it

What if Brice wasn't talking about Joshua. What if he was talking about his demon/alien dad? Brice could have known about Jake's origin and if he actually knew the monster (being within the same circles) he might be afraid of him. So the line is actually coming from a place of fear and not newfound respect. At least that's what I thought when I first saw it.

TrivialRant Not really... I recall him referencing "Joshua" multiple times. Also that wouldn't fit in with being *Jermain's* father and furthermore, they literally explained that whole dilemma as a result of Joshua's demon hunting. I hate when people pull random fan theories out of their ass
