Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Mixer

Музыка

Are you a DJ wondering if you need a mixer in addition to your DJ board? In this video, David Lee answers this question and provides valuable insights. He explains that for most DJs who control their system levels and set up their equipment properly, an additional mixer is unnecessary and can even cause more harm than good. However, if you need to integrate multiple microphones, instruments, or other sources, a mixer might be required.
David shares important tips to consider when incorporating a mixer into your setup. He advises caution when connecting your DJ mixer or controller to a band mixer, as the output levels may not be compatible with microphone inputs, leading to distortion and compromised sound quality. He suggests using line-level inputs, such as quarter-inch inputs, and mentions the option of using additional hardware to lower the output level if needed.

I dealt with this just last Sunday at a night club. They had the DJM900 mixer going straight to the sound system and naturally this was already tuned because it was an install of a high end sound system. So I just plugged in my FOH mixer to one of the RCA inputs of the DJM mixer that was open. Worked great because the gig had in addition to the DJ an MC, Guitar, Sax, Trumpet, percussion, and Bachata dance instructors with wireless headsets roaming around.

I agree if you don't know how to use a mixer, you're probably better off without one. I use a mixer for the multiple mic inputs as well as gentle mic compression and hi pass filter. I also like to use subs on sends.

Can you name a couple examples of secondary line level control, possibly with some basic eq control as a bonus.

I really wish someone would release a comprehensive guide about how to hook up a DJ controller to a mixer properly.. most of the guys out there are just basic don't cover anything like compression, software overhead or anything else.

@@djgainsbond unfortunately I'm not popular enough to get the point across to many DJs, or knowledgeable enough to get the perfect balance that's one thing I've been trying to do for a few years now is trying to get the perfect overhead balance to my mixer I usually just end up cutting it completely out and having to run everything through the channels I have because it literally sounds just better. Even with perfectly gained, and EQ 'd channels...

Well, to be fair... a lot of so called "DJ's" nowadays should first take some classes starting with what a frequency is?/how many are they?; what it means dB, gain, even how sound travels, etc etc etc... those you know, it's a lot of just basic knowledge needed... not just picking one song and mix it... I have both passive and active sound systems. Never an issue using a mixer on my active system, always properly gain balanced of course, and I love to use a mixer every time, my sound signal don't get too stressed plus you never know when you could use some extra channels, BTW I use a 1U mixer, 6 CH, in my rack that also contains some other components, like a power conditioner, EQ, compressor and an aural exciter. So you wanna know how to get the most out of your equipment, what to buy, etc, First start learning from the bottom, it's worth. The result? A nice sound not causing ear fatigue at all and actually getting your equipment to last longer...
