Advancing with Watercolor: Problems and Solutions - Using Patterns to Solve Complexity

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video was done to support my class which met on Location in Bellagio, Bergamo, and Venice Italy over 2 weeks in September . I this small series “Problems and Solutions” I present paintings done based on sketches or paintings done in the field. I will address common problems the watercolorist faces while working in Plein Air . Some of these are - what makes a good subject, how to work with shadows and changing light, architecture, simplifying complexity, and more...
In each video I will address some of the challenges with working on site as well a specific challenges in design and watercolor technique. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working under an open sky that we did.
In this video I demonstrate how to simplify a complex scene using patterns.

When I first saw this scene years ago, my very first thought was "I could never do that", and though it's certainly tricky, it seems easier than one may think!

It’s so good to see you again. Throughout time you have become my favorite watercolor artist. Your loose brushwork and technique, the use of color and loose compositions and your relaxed way of teaching, makes your channel great! Thank you so much for sharing your talents!

At 36:49 you added a tiny stripe of white that changed everything for me. All of a sudden I could see the shadows. Then I could see how the white leads the eyes to the tower. Great lesson. Thank you.

Awesome Gary! Fyi Chitrapat paper is a beautiful handmade paper from India that has more of a random grain (as opposed to machine pressed) similar to leather, which provides a subtle texture to dry brush strokes (less uniformity) and also more of a granular quality.

Thanks for sharing, but I don't think the video is very useful the way you did it. Most peopel are going to want to paint along with you. But we can't. There is no reference photo. There is no picture-in-picture of the reference photo. We cannot see what you're painting. It is impossible to follow what you're doing unless there is a reference photo.
