    @@zachwilliams88 The dessert only dates to the 1960s and Italians have many versions of it. Each ingredient is not sacred. Usually ladyfingers are used but sometimes sponge cake is used. The original involved no whipped cream at all, but most peope use it now. It's allowed.

    Technically, he wasn’t completely crazy. History.com explains The Great Depression lasted until roughly 1939, so he wasn’t terribly off.

    Girl Scout73 technically, we didn’t move completely out of the depression era until just before we entered the war, but the depression that we typically speak of and think as depression lasts from the year of 1929 until about 1938. In 1938 we started moving out of it.

    As a baker by profession, I can guarantee that out of the cakes I make at work the carrot cake has the most sugar and oil. Plus, cream cheese frosting is just cream cheese, butter, and sugar so also not helping

    That wasn't bread pudding. You literally just drizzled some caramel sauce over a piece of bread. Real bread pudding is roughly a half and half mixture of cubed bread chunks and a custard, usually with some variety of dried fruits and spices mixed in as well. It's baked and served warm and is soft and moist and usually incredibly sweet. It is NOT hard and dry and all bread with just a little sauce poured on top.

    Yes... bread pudding is often called "oven french toast" in USA. I wonder what they were served as well, because they should have made the association and not wondered why people would serve bread as dessert.

    Grandfather was born in the 30’s, his favorite dessert is bread pudding(at least his mom’s). Dad was born in the 60’s, his favorite dessert is carrot cake.

    Lol, now a baked apple _is_ depression food. That one was easy, lol. When Germany was ravaged by the war, they made a "sweet" fruit drink from leftover apple waste (and cheese, I think). That eventually became Fanta.

    Tiramisu did NOT exist in the 1600s. The earliest reference to tiramisu didn't happen till the 1960s, in Treviso.
