That was honestly the tipping point for Rick and Morty. In one fell swoop it garnered resentment from the cartoon community and respect from the "’member Samurai Jack?" 90's kid crowd. It's like the perfect storm with the Mulan nugget sauce bit at the end. Pickle Rick premiering two episodes later is just the cherry on top.

I may know why Adult Swim held back until 2004. In the early days of Cartoon Network they did one single prank for the channel, and it resulted in replaying the same Screwy Squirrel cartoon non-stop for twelve hours. It led to Cartoon Network's site and business hotlines to be taken over by Screwy, with the phone number to CN's office in Atlanta leading to an answering machine message saying they were attempting to get Screwy under control. This led to so much god damn backlash that they stopped touching April Fool's until Adult Swim happened. EDIT: since I left this comment, I found out that the person in charge of the Screwy Squirrel bit was..... well, Mike Lazzo. The soon-to-be head of Adult Swim came up with it as a way to do a stunt, but as such an elaborate one that it felt like a Tex Avery gag on its own. But it being unannounced, ala some of Adult Swim's pranks mixed with it being in a time slot before Adult Swim happened kinda pissed people off.

The internet archive has preserved the anime episodes with fart noises in there entirety. If that site goes down we might loose a piece of Adult Swim history

@@regulate.artificer_g23.mdctlsk not quite what happened was that the IA has a system that makes it work like a IRL Library (so for example if they have 3 physical copies of The Room they can let 3 people watch it online at the same time with a queue for any subsequent people) to get around copyrighted material hosted there but during the pandemic they released these blocks letting anyone watch/listen and in this case read, anything as much as they wanted and here's where the problem comes from, among the stuff they have in their archive is a bunch of copyrighted books from still living authors so those authors plus their publishers got pissed and sued IA for this breach and they won (in addition IA cannot hire lawyers to save their lives, their lawyers made more harm than good for them) IA made an appeal so it ain't over just yet but most likely they will have to pay a fine and remove the copyrighted material they have

The issue with stuff like Pibby is that like many things, it was most likely created solely as an insolated short yet internet "lore" enthusiasts get obsessed over the most trvial material and demand more. If it does become a show/movie then it will most likely won't be very good due to their not being enough material to justify an entire show. Same thing happened with Bee and Puppy Cat

I think Pibby works because she's not just a "Haha, Dora gets hurt" character. She's treated as an innocent getting caught up in an apocalypse far beyond her understanding. Suddenly, she has to fight people who just tried to help her, face the friends she accidently left behind and grow as a person while possibly sacrificing her innocence. The show seems to enjoy making fun of Edutainment, but it's nice to see a shred of respect for the genre in an otherwise bleak concept.

The 2012 April fools bringing back Toonami was such a great surprise. Also, never forget how the Rick and Morty April Fools led to the McDonalds incident

I think Pibby has potential, but I also hate how much its core idea has been run into the ground

Disclaimer: Adult Swim Canada actually stopped with the Lifetime movies not long after the launch. Now the only movies they air are from DC on weekends. I will give it credit for introducing me to Delta State but they also aired Pelswick at one point so just keep us in mind whenever the idea of a 24 hour Adult Swim in the US is brought up

I saw Dumb and Dumber on there once.

Adult Swim Jr. actually originated all the way back in 2017. There was a bump saying, "Adult Swim Jr.: Coming Soon". The joke of course being that a junior version of Adult Swim doesn't make any sense. However, lots of people were confused on whether it was real or not and would constantly ask Adult Swim about it. It would become a running-gag on the channel, being referenced in several more bumps throughout the years before the prank in 2021.

Adult Swim Jr was so unexpected it made me crack up

I’m Canadian and I didn’t know I had CN on my tv until I started on my “too old for cartoons” phase, meaning I had no idea about adult swim. Then when I was about 14 it spun off into its own channel and they started advertising it in a lot of places. For a few months the ads for the channel were just pics of old people in pools with no descriptors of what adult swim actually was. I thought it was maybe a horror movie or a cult lmao. Some time later I realized it is just a tv channel. One day when I was sick I tuned in, still unaware of what the branding was meant to convey. I thought I was having a genuine fever dream watching the commercial breaks and bumpers. Little did I know that’s kind of how it’s supposed to feel when you’re watching adult swim

I'm surprised it wasn;t that, due to their tounge bathing of Ginndy. Seriously,. HOW many times has the second season of Primal been shown?! Is Ginndy paying them under the table or something?! Enough Primal already! The 2nd season was NOT as good as the first.

At 12:37 I appreciated the Wayne White painting they parodied for an ad. Wayne White was the set and puppet designer for Pee Wee’s Playhouse, and since then he’s become a successful painter. He takes old lithographs and crappy art recreations from antique shops, then paints funny 3D words over the landscapes, like “LSD”, “Drop the Coy Boy Act”, and “Smokin Weed In The Porta-Potty At The Civil War Reenactment.” Was nice to see the deep reference to an old April Fool’s gag.

I find the character lineup for Pibby more interesting than the crossover novelty

I would indeed be interested to see a Children's show lead, a sidekick and a villainess step out of their comfort zones if they want to survive more than whatever cameo potential that can happen.

I find it odd that people were hyped over Pibby because it was a crossover show, as I was always more interested in how the writers were going to present Pibby's journey through a collapsing multiverse. The potential of he and the rest of the Original Characters for the show are what I was waiting for, such a shame people overblown it.

The Coin Hunt gag was also sort of related with the weird live show Fishcenter. Remember that? Also, I actually stayed almost all night for the 2020 prank. I had a feeling 12 Oz. Mouse was gonna premiere that night. It did. Cue me squeeing like crazy.

Man, the 2012 Toonami return was a real trip...one of those things that you can never forget. also seeing fuggin Mind Game during the 2018 one was a different kind of trip altogether hoo boi.

I watched part of their 2022 april fools prank because they streamed it on KZread and I live outside the U.S., it was a really fun experience, especially when I joined and had no idea what was going on

I'll always remember the 2012 one. I was just chilling one night when one of my online friends said "DUDE TOONAMI IS BACK" and I was like "WHAT" and he was like "TURN ON THE TV" and there it was. I couldn't believe my eyes. It had only been 4 years since the block ended, and yet it felt like 20.

Pibby's one of those ideas where you're like "God that would be so damn cool" when you first see it but if it ever actually turned into a real show it'd probably never live up to the expectation. It's better that it exist as a short (or as a one-night event) thought experiment where you can imagine your own story/ending.

2012 April Fools got me back into anime. Seeing TOM again was like a class reunion.

Bushworld Adventures is one of the best things Adult Swim ever aired.

You had to be there in 2012 when they did the Toonami April Fools one. Going on for usual Adult Swim only to see the Gohan vs. Cell Kamehameha clash instead, that shit felt like a fever dream.

The Mr T/ Chuck Norris April Fools prank is the only 2000s era prank I remember. Mainly as they kinda kept it going later on in the year. By adding other random older cartoons and anime.

I was interested in Pibby at first, but the more time went by, the more I realized it would probably just be another chance for WB to flash their properties. Just like The Lego Batman movie (the only one to do it right), Space Jam 2, Multiversus, etc.

I remember hearing about the Toonami April Fools prank the next day. There was a lot of hype and excitement for it since people really missed Toonami after it was initially cancelled. That prank leading to the block actually being revived for Adult Swim really makes it quite memorable among their other April Fools pranks.

I remember when the 2017 Rick and Morty Premiere took the time slot allocated for a very anticipated episode of Samurai Jack. Rick and Morty's presence was already wearing thin at the time, and people were not happy.

Pibby aged like wine considering Discovery annihilated most of CN and HBO Max's catalogue. It was just Warner Bros Kingdom Hearts, so I still anticipate on Pibby despite the series not releasing yet as of this comment. My idea for an Adult Swim April Fools is that the entire Toonami block would play Bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo-bo from midnight to 6am; the watermark would have nosehairs during the run before signing off.

I heard theres a rumor where on the 2016 prank they aired all the lowest rated episodes of their usual lineup as part of the prank , ive seen this said maybe like 5 or 6 times and i cannot find any proof of it

I was the one responsible for uploading the entire Fullmetal Alchemist fart episode. Not the camcorder one, but the low quality VHS capture that I see you using here. I remember tuning into adult swim, not realizing it was April Fools day. I tuned in to watch Ghost in the Shell and noticed the girl in the wheelchair farting. For a moment, I seriously thought it was meant to be taken seriously, as in I thought they made some technology to help the poor girl move by using her wind instrument. But after looking at my calendar and realizing exactly what was going on, I immediately grabbed a VHS tape and started recording everything I could. I was only able to get the last part of GitS but thankfully I managed to record the complete episode of FMA. I used to have it on my youtube channel for a while before Aniplex decided to put all 3 strikes on me. So I decided to upload to it megaupload, and eventually some kind folks put it up on the Internet Archives. Now, something I NEED to mention because this is NEVER mentioned anywhere, but on top of the fact that GitS and FMA had fart noises, adult swim went through the trouble of also adding descriptions of the fart noises in the closed captioning. Unfortunately this isn't something that can be picked up through recording devices, but honest to god, the descriptions are amazing. It ranged from "quiet fart" to "explosive diarrhea fart" to "wet, gooey, poop wind" to "fart interrupting monologue". I AM NOT JOKING. I still have the video tape and one day, I'll try and re-record it with a better VHS player that can also capture the closed captioning, because it is a magnificent experience.

I felt really old seeing people freaking out over the "innovative" concept of Pibby, and even making up news of it being anything more than just a well-made 4 minute gag.

I'm not going to lie, the one year I avoided watching Adult Swim was when they put toonami back! On top of that, the CN execs would later share they felt like no one would be interested in the block anymore; which just shows how out of touch they are with their audience!😅( Glad a few people posted the April Fools Block on KZread so I could catch it!❤)

PLLLLLEASE let that mysterious time slot be Venture Bros and/or Metalocalypse related 🤞! Although pssst Fire Ant is airing tonight and it’s supposedly the extended cut *Update*: and this year’s prank was…okay. Kind of amusing with the fast forward gimmick (and opening sketch dissing AI art) but honestly a slight letdown compared to the previous two and even the Stewart’s previews were kind of limited. Normally, your supposed to be quiet and take orders from the sergeants there, but the TV was playing that cyber shark movie. When the girl said" Oh my God, Robo Shark followed me on Twitter", we all lost it. It was so stupid and we were all pretty tense so that helped relieve tension.
