Adrian Grenier On How Turning To Philosophy Saved His Life

Ryan speaks with Adrian Grenier in the first of a two-part episode about their parallel career and life trajectories, what it’s really like to be famous, the rock-bottom moment that led to Adrian taking control of his life, why he is striving to be a better father than his own, why farming is the only profession for a philosopher, and more.

Thanks the book recommendation Range. I love Federer and tennis but don't want to turn my 2-year-old daughter or 5-month-old son into a tiger. My mom introduced me to tennis when I was 7 and i never played competitive until 25 years old! I burned out on team sports early on in life and now am SUPER passionate about tennis at 35! I want y kids to be well trained but passioante and not begrudging of tehri talent because it was forced upon them. Ill have to keep reminding myself of this because I really want them to play.

I have a question for you. There once was a slave who was forced to work for no reward. The slave worked in a palace and spent his days tending to the beautiful gardens and pools and wonderful coloured birds and delightful creatures that resided there. This work that he was doing was exactly the kind of work that he would like to do if he was free. The slave was aware that if he gained his freedom, he would then begin his own life’s work to build up the situation that he is in already. In the future as a free man, there is no guarantee that his palace would be profitable and he might find himself still with no reward and in a worse garden. But still every morning he would wake up with the single thought of “ I am a slave, and I did not want to be put to work for no reward whatsoever other than my accommodation and food. How am I going to get out of this situation and become free?” Because he was angry at his situation he spent all his days in a depressed state, feeling suicidal. Is there a philosophy which will allow a slave to enjoy his life of enslavement and enjoy his daily work, because that is what he would like to do anyway?

For me, when I was a kid I performed as an actor in plays, and performed in piano and dance so I got used to the attention and for a while I wanted to act to do it and to be seen but I outgrew the feelings of needing outside attention at least not to the point that I once felt I needed it.

Stoicism can be very useful. And it is notable that Ryan has brought some of the principles to light to such a large audience. It's just that I'm not certain he's the most ideal messenger. To that end, there's just something off about the values revealed and the tone presented...subtly and not so subtly...in this conversation.

So far I’m 58 minutes in. I am thrilled that Ryan murders snakes. My husband and I have dreamt of delving into ranch life and homesteading so I am feeling a refreshed sense of direction. Like yes this is something we can do! I’ll have to finish watching in between diaper changes. This conversation is a real treat.

It’s funny but I feel like Adrien and were on a similar path. For years I wanted to be Adrien/Vince, the playboy who got with as many beautiful women as possible. But last year I finally got a taste of that life, and I realized it’s not what I really wanted. I want something more substantial and meaningful, and it seems like Adrien discovered that too.
