    I wish we used the terms "noradrenaline" and "adrenaline" here in the US instead of "norepinephrine" and "epinephrine". I think it makes it so much easier to remember and it helps to relate the "adrenal-ine" the adrenal gland.

    Epinephrine has a similar clue, too. It is epi (above) the nephrine (nephron: the functional unit of kidneys, nephrology: the study of kidneys) I actually just realized the connection of both adrenaline and epinephrine to the adrenals and the nephrons while watching this video!

    Error? The neurotransmitter in the sympathetic ganglia is acetylcholine, not NE/NA. There is no reason to have adrenergic receptors there. The alpha-2 receptors lie in the post-ganglionic neurons of the SNS at the synapse with the target organ. Yes or no?

    I would say in an extreme situation of overstimulation, it can help prevent an exaggerated response that can be even more dangerous than the threat itself. An example may be extreme tachycardia leading to cardiac arrest.

  • @donnyduggan1713

    Simple question, but for some reason, I'm having trouble finding the answer online. Does norepinepherine have a higher binding affinity for its excitatory receptors than the alpha-2 inhibitory receptors? I'd assume so, as that is the only way it would be able to produce a response while still running the negative feedback loop. Am I asking the right question? I'm just unsure as to how the negative feedback loop is managed (ie what level of stimulus the sympathetic nervous system will reach before that inhibition kicks in, and how this is controlled). Thanks for the great video!

    These types of physiological function are usually not all-or-none, which is to say there is no complete inhibition or activation of something. There is a constant homeostasis that is regulated constantly by several factors and mechanisms.

    Alpha2 agonist? Like what? Or did you mean alpha-adrenergic agonists in general?

  • @AT17637

    @AT17637

    Yes, I.e. we commonly see constipation with guanfacine and clonidine. Guanfacine is meant to target alpha 2 receptors. If constipation occurs, would it due to an unintended cross action on the alpha 1 receptor?
