Adrenaline-Fueled Spearfishing with Shark for Snapper!

Спорт

Spearfishing around Big Sharks to take home a feed of fresh Snapper! I head out on a solo dive to beautiful Tiritiri Matangi Island in New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf and encounter some BIG Bronze Whaler sharks while I free dive and hunt for Snapper on the Speargun. Followed by a 'catch and cook' filleting and cook up session!

Excellent. I'm over in New England and dive all year round, so I love seeing Spearos from different parts of the world doing what we love. I was out 03/18/23 all day hunting lobster and enjoying the dive. 5°c water and air, sunny, low swell, and no chop. Was empty handed almost all day so I decided to get a bit deeper since low tide was peaking in the late afternoon and I knew I could hit the sandy bottom at 20m instead of 25. Omw back to shallower water around 13m diving super well in the cold really hitting my stride in terms of breath holds/breathe ups I was down for over a minute when I peaked over a ledge and saw two decent sized claws poking out the ledge. As soon as I was over the claws he caught my shadow and spun on a dime, claws at the ready. Did a quick fake-out with my right hand and grabbed him behind the claws with my left. He fought the whole way into the bag, but eventually I got him home and into the pot. I've been spearfishing/diving now for many years and I am constantly learning new things and improving my technique. It's in no small part thanks to diver/content creators like Ollie that I was able to realize what was possible and I'm grateful to all of them for sharing their adventures and showing us what's possible if you just get out there and grab life by the horns. Thank you, Ollie!

Oh man you’re missing out! Smoke those fish heads, so much flavour in the eyes, cheeks and brain. Fry the frames! My absolute favourite way to eat them. Lightly dust/cover in flour then cook them whole. Till nice and crispy, you won’t regret it!

I have always kept the heads on bigger snappers just been a bit slack with smaller ones but the smaller heads are great for soup! I usually do smoke the big ones then make into fish pies!
