The North American "Virginia" Opossum is a crepuscular animal. Meaning their "peak" activity time is twilight, just befor dark and just befor morning. But that is their "peak" activity time, they still go at night and in the daytime. Trail cams have verified this. Grapes are a big big favorite of the ones in my back yard. But, please know that to prevent Metabolic Bone Disease, softening of bones and deformity, they have a 2 to 1 ratio requirement of Calcium to Phosphorus. That means feed them bones with very little meat, eggs with shells, and Plain Low Fat Yogurt. No meat unless it's got bone with it. I hard boil eggs and add the crushed up shells back into the egg, mix and feed. Also, I buy Chicken and cook it for myself and keep all the bones for the Opossums. They eat the neck, back, ribs and the ends of the leg, thigh and wing bones. Please realize that if you feed them sweets that just like a little kid, they won't eat their dinner of worms, snails, slugs, snakes, mice, bugs and dead stuff. which gives them MBD, You feel good watching them eat stuff that's not good for them and they suffer later for it. So, no Tacos, no Pizza, no Burgers, no Hot dogs. That's not good for them. Please?

@empireO A good update is the spicy attitude and less handling from me helped her learn the way of the opossum on her own schedule. I would see her foraging in her habitat. After Halloween weekend, I accidentally left a clasp loose on the door of her habitat. The next day I noticed the latch finished getting loose. She decided it was time for her to be on her own. I didn't force it and it was natural for her to go on her journey.

I wake her up to give her a snack then she goes back to sleep. It is an opportunity to check on her habitat while she is mostly sleepy. Change her water, etc.

@@Somethingandtheotherthing I completely understand.....more than you think in fact. I have one as a pet too!!!! Mine is a rescue that had a terrible injury, but he is almost healed (blind in one eye though). But he is doing great. The longer I've had him, the less he would show me teeth, and the only time he does it now is just like yours- ie when I wake him up! hahaha. But how can we blame them- no one likes being woke up! haha

@@tiffanyclark-grove1989 You are 100% right!!! In the month since I made that post, my little guy has completely stopped showing his teeth except in very rare cases where I grab him too quickly or something. But even in those cases, it isn't like he really wants to bite or is even really upset. It seems like more of a reflex. I can literally put my finger in his open mouth and he will not bite down even a little. It's mind blowing how gentle these creatures are. Many people's only exposure to an opossum is finding one in their trash can or otherwise cornered, and so the opossum will growl a little and show teeth, so people get the idea that they may be mean. In reality, that growl and teeth showing is the worst they will do and in a very short time they will stop even that. But most people just see that initial reaction and get the wrong idea. Now, a wild racoon is a different story. THey look cuter, but when cornered they will absolutely bite and they stay mean for a pretty long time. Long live the gentle opossum! (who actually has a sadly short life span)

@@jon420 I don't recommend opossums eating horse poop. It's full of hay & grain. That is not usually one of their most common foods to eat. If a horse eats hay that an opossum defecated in, that horse may get ill. Opossum often poo near a water source like a pond or stream. An opossum will also find worms and grubs near water. The non- releasable opossums will poo in water source, sometimes their own water dish.
