So basically they have the personality of a cat in a 55-80 lbs dog body? Sounds like the right breed for me.

Greyhounds are amazing dogs, majestic and intelligent - they're so loving. NOTE TO EVERYBODY: They're very easy going and easy to take care of. My Cecil was very easy to train to be off his leash, you just have to make it fun and if they wont come to you - turn and walk the other way. They get used to being close. My boy even stops at the roads to wait. My Cecil is my fourth in the last 18 years... I Greyhounds are very deserving of a loving and caring family to belong to.

I love greyhounds because of how healthy and relaxed their breed is. They are actually great for small spaces and don’t require much excercise!

My mom does greyhound rescue. She has fostered over 300 greyhounds. I've seen a lot of personalities and not one has been aggressive towards people. Love the video.

I have 2 greyhounds. One is deaf. And she is so stubborn. She knows hand signals. But she will ignore them at times. I know that she knows what I am trying to convey to her, but she chooses when she wants to react.

You can smugly think ''Mine listens to me now''...I spent time improving recall on walks..it was working brilliantly, then on a field, I saw her eating something...I called, and no response... Called again, zero. walked towards her, and her eating sped up to warp speed.... then /I saw what she was eating...someone had dumped a load of chicken breasts from a Cricket match on the field...and these breasts were greenish in the summer heat. I thought ''oh no....I'll be seeing these again later''...but they didn't make her ill, just very farty. Luckily they didn't have bones...but hound deafness does occur..and I thought I had done such a good job!...not so :)

Oh My Gosh!!! This is one of the most informative and thorough dog breed descriptions I have ever heard!!! Thank you so much for your honesty and pointing out all of the nuances of this beautiful breed!!!

Linda Forward do you guys have an adoption fee and if so, how much? Lubbock is quite a ways away from Heavener, Oklahoma but I’ll drive for a good dog. Do y’all do home checks? I’m actually planning on living on the road full time and a couch greyhound sounds amazing!

I adopted my first greyhound a few months ago. He is an ex track dog from China. The first 2 weeks did require a bit of training and reinforcing of rules but after that he has been a fantastic member of the household. Considering that until he was adopted he has known nothing except the dog track an the concrete kennel he was kept in he has acclimated to his new life extremely quickly. The day we picked him up we realized he had never experienced grass before. Within 2 days he was walking around the yard like he owned the place. I cannot say enough about a greyhounds ability to just calmly accept any new situation. They are truly gentle giants.

Thanks for the video! I just adopted my black greyhound in March and she is my world. We have taken her to obedience classes and she has done very well because she is SO food motivated! So obedience is not a lost cause, you just need to find out what they are motivated by!

We had a rescue lurcher (greyhound collie mix) and even though she had a terrible start in life and was neglected pretty badly her calm and forgiving nature shone through. She died aged 16 of old age, I still think about her often.

Great, hugely informative, and honest. Definitely one of the most detailed and candid videos I've watched on any dog breed. Thanks for taking the time to inform.

Thank you for taking the time to watch! I'm glad it helped in some way!! Greys are AWESOME and really everything that's said is true! But I wouldn't want someone adopting one thinking they are getting a guard dog...they are gonna be greatly disappointed!! lol They really are the perfect companion as long as you can afford the food (I'm around 60ish USD a month) and are not really looking for a dog that is going have the personality and obedience of a working breed. If you just want loving, loyal, unique, lazy, funny, eye-catching, and random spurts of hyperness, then adopt away!! :)

Ernest Arrellano ppfftt.... $60 a month?! I wish it was that cheap for me! I spend around $300 a month, and that was when I just had one. I had a second grey adopt me two weeks ago. I’ll cringe to see the food bill this month. I guess it’s peanut butter sandwiches for me! Lol

I’ve got a girl named Badger waiting for me when she finishes racing in Florida. I first met her when she was 3 months old... fell in love in an instant. Grandma was down there and visited her, and she said that Badger is a very friendly girl. Apparently I really know how to pick them.

My greyhounds are terrified of my cat. They are so gentle and such relaxed and lazy dogs.

I have had 4 ex-racing Greyhounds in my life. They are my first ever dog. I have severe arthritis. They are the perfect dog. I adopted them from organizations that brought retired Greyhounds to Canada. Just plain loves. ❤️🇨🇦

Love the video. Just got our 2nd grey about a year ago after putting down our 15yr old. We have since lost our 16yr old pointer and are looking daily for another grey to adopt. Unfortunately we are in michigan and cannot find anybody who will adopt out of state and michigan litterally has no rescues that we have found. If you know of any organizations that might be able to help it would be greatly appreciated. We lucked out and found our most recent one at a shelter but it came from a kennel in ohio and the dog was 3 years old and had never been out of a kennel. Didnt know what grass was. Scared of everything, not house trained, and huge prey drive. Had be returned numerous times due to difficulties with training. Is a great dog now, although hes one that can NEVER be off lead. Hes never been seperate from other dogs and he would greatly like a sister to share his adventures with. Thanx alot for the video raising awareness of these unbelievable dogs.

This is what I tell people when they seem surprised when I tell them that mine are allowed on the furniture and sleep in my bed. “ it’s their house. I just live here to serve them” if they wanna sleep in my bed, and there’s no room for me, I happily sleep in one of their beds. Lol they are comfy. If they want the couch, and there’s no room, guess where I sit? The most amazing thing about having a greyhound is watching their personalities come out and blossom over time. I’m always so amazed. It’s very entertaining. They’re just big lovable goofballs. All they want is love, and to please you. I live in Wisconsin, and there’s a haul coming up from the closing tracks in Florida next month. I think about 50-100 dogs to the rescue that I’ve adopted from. But I think I’m just going to call them and just have them bring all the dogs here. What’s 100 more when you already have two? Lol

Hahaha I've fallen asleep on my retired racer's bed and then woke up to her on my bed. In my opinion if you wouldn't sleep on it then you shouldn't give it to your dog.

This is one of the best greyhound adoption tips videos I’ve watched. Hoping to get my very own rescue dog soon (here in the U.K.) and I can’t wait.

Nicely done! I'm glad you found the Greyhound to be a good match for you! Couple things I wanted to mention.... The training aspect- actually, they are VERY trainable as many are being used for our Veterans as support dogs. The fact that the Greyhounds can be very independent does create a bit of a challenge, but rest assured, they know exactly what you are asking (provided you have trained them to know what you expect)!! I currently have a hound that is EXTREMELY smart but is also EXTREMELY independent! He is trained and knows his commands very well.... but.... I can see the bubble over his head saying "Eh, nah... I'll do this instead". As you show in your video, your hound can be off lead which requires some training. Please make sure you let potential adopters know this is not something that is considered acceptable by adoption groups- some of us just get pretty lucky with some dogs. I did have a hound who was amazingly obedient and in certain circumstances could be off lead. He did not have much of a prey drive, like your girl, which was good in this regard. I just hate to see people take liberty with the idea of "off lead" because it's the dog who will ultimately pay the price for this (run away, hit by car... ). They all do very well in a basic obedience class to learn household manners and to build a bond with their new families. Grooming..... lol, I bathe my guys about once a YEAR!! Usually in the summer on a hot day when they like the feel of the cold water! Otherwise, since they have very little fat to speak of and a single coat (if they're lucky as most of them have plenty of bald spots) they don't have that "doggie smell" that people associate with having a dog. A mild dog shampoo, a good rinse and that's that! Separation Anxiety.... Thank you for bringing that up!!!! I would agree that the Greyhound is probably one of the very few breeds that getting a 2nd dog may help with it. Many Hounds do go on to live very successfully as a singleton as your girl Nima does. It's very good to share what Separation Anxiety is and what will help for it (outside of a 2nd dog which for some is not a possibility). I like that you shared the adoption process! Good for folks to know that it's not an interrogation but a process by which the adoption group uses to make sure that the commitment to dog ownership is taken seriously and that the match for dog and family is perfect! Most groups operate very similarly and their desire and goal is to make adoption of these amazing dogs very positive and successful- life long homes! I believe all the groups do really well at this because a vast majority of Greyhound families have more than one!! Thank you for promoting the breed so nicely! I used to be part of the adoption process for a group and it's good to see positive feedback about it! Love your dog's name and how you picked it!! I have done the same with my dogs over the years : )

Great job! Well done video. I’ve had two retired racers in my life and hope to have more in the near future! Your video was very accurate. I would stress that letting a greyhound off leash in an non-enclosed area is not advisable in almost all cases because of their prey drive. In an abundance of caution, I would say the risk of letting a greyhound off leash without running the risk of that ONE time they do get that drive to chase is a risk too great to take. Most adoption groups will require that an adopter agree never to let the greyhound off leash unless in an enclosed area. Make a fast friend! Adopt a retired racer!!!

Great video! I’ve owned a few different breeds throughout my life but from the time I adopted my first Grey, I’ll never go back to any other breed. The group I first adopted from here in MI required all applicants to read “Greyhounds for Dummies” and Adopting the Racing Greyhound” by Cynthia Branigan. Even if you’ve had a ton of experience with dogs your first time owning a Greyhound experience can be very different and these 2 books can give you a lot of helpful information. Like everything in this video says they’re amazing, wonderful temperament, absolutely loving, low maintenance (we go on one 2 mile walk a day and he’s beat by the end) they’re sprinters so they are low energy and spend a lot of time sleeping hence the nickname 40mph couch potato. They like to keep themselves very clean and constantly groom themselves they’re also low on the oils that many other breeds have along with minimal shedding so are great for people with allergies and you don’t want to give them too many baths because of the lack of body oils, some tend to have dry skin also and a certain shampoo is recommended. As far as vet care you want to take them to sitehound experienced vet because there are somethings that they need special attention in as there are certain anesthesia’s you want to give them if a medical procedure is needed as they are much more sensitive to them. Most adoption groups don’t care if they’re your first time dog just that you are well equipped for a dog and that a Greyhound is the right fit for you because rehomming can be extremely stressful on a dog and a one time/first adoption is ideal. They have all the love to give and are great companions for elderly and young alike, though like all dog breeds each dog is an individual and personalities differ. Just some tips from another greyhound owner for viewers. Again Great video!! Warning Once you fall in love with a Greyhound you won’t be able to go back and they often multiply in your house before you realize it!

FlyersNfillies we adopted our 1st Grey 15 years ago and we still have both those books. We are now on our 3rd greyhound. Thinking of getting another one soon, especially now that Florida voted to ban racing here in Florida.

I so pray you have your GH, if not, thank you for providing a beautiful life for your GH. I have had 3 rescue GH's, I never considered doing a vid about it. :)

Excellent video. Lots of good information, and you're right - I'm here for "the reason".

My elementary school principal (who I didn’t like) had two greyhounds that he would occasionally bring with him to school and one time he read to our class and brought one of his dogs with him. The most of the other times I have seen greyhounds were because I was at a fair or something and a greyhound rescue and adoption place was trying to bring awareness and get dogs adopted. I also met a lady at a store once who had a greyhound with her that she had rescued (it was a retired racer) and it sparked my interest in the dogs.

Really good points made, some that I think many dog adopters probably wouldn't think of . Nice job, nice dog (and cat)!

I have a husky and greyhound mix named Zeus. He is about 10 months old now and I have had him ever since he was a pup! He has the most dorky personality, is so sweet and is really good with kids. He most definitely shows a lot of greyhound traits. Love him so much:)

I got a greyhound labrador retriever mix. He only barks when my husband pretends to howl. We've had him since he was a puppy. We knew that he was a labrador retriever mix but there wasn't any signs of lab in him. As soon as he got fed more and was growing a bit, he just had the long legs and muscular body.

She was an injured racer dumped on a charity, we are fighting the industry in Western Australia & slowly making progress. Hi, great video. I'm from the UK, where greyhound racing is not only legal, but sadly, widely accepted and frequented. I've known a lot of friends who have been taken racing by their work place as part of a works party. I'm very glad to hear that it's outlawed in 40 states in the US! I have a Lurcher (Greyhound/Whippet/Beddlington/Suluki) and grew up with Greyhounds and Lurchers. They're amazing pets and shouldn't be used for racing. They don't love to race, they love to run (and then laze!)

It’s very sad but at this point I will take any progress we can get :)

Bristol Greyhound track {UK} was closed..a run down depressing place, the first bend is where so many injuries occurred, now an IKEA built on that track site, where humans chase around looking for bargains. The Macau Canidrome being closed for good was a huge success [March 26th 2019]..but Ireland is an epicentre of greyhound production...and shows no sign of slowing down this overproduction of hounds, many will be exported.

Oh goodness... love her!..Those playbows...and the snorts...and the ''spidering'' with the legs...what a good girl with cats too.. Fawns with the dark eyeliner is the most beautiful coat colour. She is very good re 'separation anxiety' too.... you have done a lovely job with her.

@@TheThirdErnest Black greyhounds are meant to be the hardest ones to home, which is so sad. Black greyhounds are very handsome, but red fawns with the Egyptian eyes..I just love that colour combo more than anything , probably because I have known and loved a dog with that colouration.. What is good about the dark rimmed eyes, even when she is a noble older lady, her black eye rims will still be there, even when her pretty red face fades to a beautiful frosty white.. Your cat is a brave cat...There is a video on ''cat testing'' greyhounds, a Scotsman tests them with the help of a very handsome tabby cat, and the cat susses them out within a few seconds. I think the cat is called Rupert :)

@@GreyhoundHomecare No! Instead I find myself Dad to a very mixed/ mixed breed puppy, around 14 weeks. had been put in a bag with its siblings and tossed over a bank, so I got a very different sort of rescue. he's beautiful!

I loved your video! I was just about to adopt a dog from the shelter but now realize what I’ve wanted all along is a greyhound. I volunteered at Greyhound rescue in Massachusetts and did adopt a dog from there, Smoky she was elderly and sick and only lived about six months. She was marvelous I was worried about having a greyhound in an apartment but after seeing yours I’m not worried mine is only slightly bigger than yours I’m going to start looking right away. I know two greyhound adoption places in my state, North Carolina I’m gonna check them out. !thank you

Thanks for the info! I'm in Scotland and have 2 dogs, a 7 year old Staffordshire Terrier and a 19 month old Staff x Greyhound. Greyhounds are common in Scotland but since I have no experience with them I was looking for breed info for that part of my girlie. Your video was great, informative and I got a giggle out of it 😁

TheThirdErnest I’m not so sure about that. One time when the paramedics were here working on me and trying to give me oxygen, my greyhound Jazzmin, didn’t like that the EMT was so close to me, I guess she thought he was hurting me, as I was thrashing around in pain. She stood up, started growling at him and blocked him with her body. He got nervous and was shaking and asked my mom to put her in the bedroom. And I just adopted another greyhound about a month ago. Her name is Olive. Anyway, whenever her and I are playing, and she gets too rambunctious, Jazzmin will get up and block me with her body and won’t let Olive near me. Now, Jazzmin is not aggressive by any means, and she’s not mean. She wouldn’t hurt a flea. But she’s just very protective of me. She’s probably the most loyal dog I’ve ever had. When we are outside, and I’m sitting down on the ground, she’ll come over and stand in front of me and just keep watch, scanning her head back and forth, like she’s guarding me. She does this every time. And she does not leave my side until I get up. ( I had another greyhound that I had to put down in March, and Jazzmin and My former greyhound, Castle, would do that. They would form like a ‘V’ around me. )So from the front, it looked like the bottom of the ‘V’. No one was getting near me. Lol

I live in San Diego, ten minutes away from the Tijuana border. The largest race track in Mexico is called El Caliente. Almost half of my friends that own a dog have a greyhound from there, and I’m getting one in two weeks!!

It's nice to hear someone else say what I've been saying for years, I've got two (sisters) they are soo different. The biggest is my Velcro dog she follows me everywhere but when we are out for a walk she's the naughty one. The smaller of the two is soo independent, she loves a quite corner and suffers badly with anxiety, she is such a scared dog, I've tried every medication and relaxation Technics known to man but she is much better at following instruction... The worst thing for me is the pray drive and not being able to let them off the lead :( We actually lost our first lurcher due to her running half way across a field over a barb wire fence and half way across a road trying to chase a neighbors dog, straight in front of a car :'( There are not enough closed off dog parks in my area so I have to get up very early on a weekend to let them off in a local football field for a good run and hope that no one else comes in after me because two big Lurchers running at you at 30 miles and hour is a very scary sight... I love them to bits and wouldn't be without them but they have very special, breed specific requirements...

I'm REALLY late to the party but I just want to say I appreciate you making this video. I'm planning on getting two dogs when I move out once I'm stable enough. I've been trying to decide what breed, or where to get them from. The greyhound is sounding more and more like the dog for me, and I'm planning on adopting the dogs in the (hopefully) near future!

My wife's cousin had three of them. Beautiful dogs, great temperament and great in the house. Don't tell my wife, but we're getting one. Oh, and great video - thanks for posting!

I live in London Uk and have 2 ex-racing Greyhounds. The 1st one we got was named Kitty's Secret and we got her from Battersea Dog's home and her photo is used to advertise homing a Greyhound. She is 3 years old and is a blue. Odin we got around 4 months ago and he was winning races but suddenly refused to run. His racing name was Robert's Vision. He is also 3 and is black. Both are amazing dogs but have different personalities, obviously. I love them to pieces. Your other video really made me laugh. Keep posting your videos.

I have an Italian greyhound , personality just like the greyhound but in a smaller version! I can't own a big dog in the apartment. The only difference is that he barks if someone walk next my door which is a plus being a sort of guard dog. Greyhound, whippet and Italian greyhound are wonderful and elegant.

Good enlightening video. I have an Irish Grehound called Fergus who came from a race track but is a "Failed Racer" meaning that he had very a ow prey drive and wouldn't chase the lure. If a Greyhound doesn't make the grade by two years old, for whatever reason, some just aren't fast enough, so they are not going to become a racing Greyhound. I got Fergus at two years old and had him for four years. Because he doesn't chase anything, no more than any other breed of Dog he is never on a leash and prefers to just walk beside me. He will have a sprint if the mood takes him, but as you so rightly said, they are very lazy Dog's and need little exercise. If you do have a Greyhound with a high prey drive and needs to be kept on a leash, you should allow them to have a run, at lest twice a week, in a secure, enclosed area. They were bred to run at high speed and they do enjoy those few minutes of really going full speed. I still get a thrill watching Fergus hit top gear. They truly are athletes! They are lazy Dog's and do sleep about 20hrs a day. He has no problem with food and I mix dry and wet food together and he is particularly fond of Sardines in tomato sauce or oil and crazy about cheese. I don't give him "treats" as I don't think Dog's need them . Greyhounds are naturally thin and muscular and look their best in that condition. They are an independent breed and can be quite aloof and you are right about ignoring you at times and carry on doing what they were doing. Greyhounds, unlike other breeds, don't do thing to please you. They are much to noble to take orders from a mere commoner!!! All things considered, I thing they are amazing Dog's and as an owner Of one, I would not have any other breed of Dog now. They are unique in every way. For those who are thinking about rescuing a Dog, DON'T look passed the loyal and affectionate GREYHOUND.

I’ve watched this video before. I came back because I think your fur baby is so cute. (And because maybe I have a little crush on you) I currently have two greyhounds. One which I’ve had for seven years, and another one that adopted me this past January. She’s two years old, she wasn’t a track dog because she would always get too distracted to chase the lure. So I have two girls, and I want to get a male. I already have a name picked out for him. ‘Rameses’. Inspired by you naming your baby after an Egyptian queen. I hope you and your greyhound are still doing well.

We adopted our greyhound almost 5 years ago. She's our first greyhound, and we're absolutely head-over-heals in love with her. We get all the same questions whenever we go out. Usually, though, people ask us: "Is that a whippit?" Ours never barks either--unless another dog tries to step on her while she's lying down. Oh, one other bonus: ours lets us brush her teeth. She loves it.

I am in AZ and adopted my greyhound from the pound. She was a half grown puppy when we got her. We will have her a year next month.

I’ve been adopting Greyhounds for 18 years and always like to have a male and female for companionship! I love this breed, they are truly soulful dogs! They get bursts of energy and the zoomies, but the majority of the time they are couch potatoes ♥️🐾

One of my former co-workers had two retired racing greyhounds, and I met them twice. Both times I just wanted to take them home with me! I won't be able to get a dog for quite some time, but I will be looking to get a greyhound when I can.

I have been wanting to adopt a greyhound for awhile now. Although, there is only one greyhound rescue in my area. Their adoption process is very difficult, compared to what I went through with my other dogs. I totally understand they want to make sure the dogs are going to the right home though.

She's beautiful! I have 2 whippets. Sighthounds are amazing dogs, I would never have any other dog.

I work at target and now are guidelines with animals are everyone is welcome I’ve even seen a lady in with a snake and we weren’t allowed to say anything! Great video I’m an apartment renter and really considering getting a greyhound so thank you for sharing!!!

Good review. Greyhound needs a zoomy ( free to run super fast ) that’s what its behaviour is asking, in the bedroom. Let it go in a fenced area only, it’ll get out of his or her system, it will be very happy afterwards. I think our GH looks like an alien creature. Yes, stubborn. Yes, Quiet, fantastic quality.

The one thing that wasn’t covered and deserves mentioning is that they have sleep startle. Greys are deep sleepers. So if you’re standing on top of them and wake them up the are disoriented and growl and what appears to attack. They aren’t attacking but humans see it that way. So before you get to them call out their name a few times and make some noise like heavy foot falls to make sure their eyes are open before you get to them.

That's so true! Even with their eyes open, they're really still asleep sometimes, and will snarl at you

My sister has an Italian Greyhound and a Whippet. I told her she neeeds to get a greyhound to have the whole breed! They are awesome dogs, so loving and sweet! Great with kids and they are also very patient annd can get along with just about any person or pet you may have, even cats. Greyhounds are pretty big so if you want the greyhound temperament but not the size if you are in a small apartment, Italian Greyhounds and Whippets are just as wonderful.

I’m near Tampa, Florida. They still have dog racing in St. Petersburg, Florida. I had no idea that it was a bad thing. I’ve gone and bet on them before. The trainers who handle the dogs and walk them to the starting point seem like they enjoy the dogs. The dogs look healthy and they look happy to run, but I guess I was just naive, that was 15 years ago. So this year will apparently will be the last for dog racing in Florida. The dogs will ALL be up for adoption. I feel like I must adopt one to make up for the past. SO... great video! Thankyou! My husband and I are retired but very active so this dog sounds awesome!!!

To be honest in the US a lot of trainers are amazing and a lot of dogs are treated well. In other countries they are abused heavily and It’s just the fact that they are racing for our enjoyment and not for theirs. In my head if not all dogs are treated humanely then it should be banned
