@@clairesschoolofphotography1767 Nikon’s NX is free editing software and it’s great for raw pic editing. Try raw shoot with D3 that will be amazing.

In answer to you question, I'm old school and like to get my images perfect (or as near as possible) before I press the shutter button. I then use Luminar to darken edges, increase contrast etc as I would have done in the darkroom back pre-digital. The results are always good and sometimes stunning. However, I also enjoy being creative and make good use of Luminar's sky packs, sun beam effects and cloning etc to produce dramatic art works. Be aware however, that when playing around with identifiable locations many viewers will overlook the artistic merit of your work and instead criticise it for being unreal or an impossible image. My reply to them is 'get a life' . I recently had to scrap an image of Stonehenge with the milky way overhead as someone pointed out that I had used the celestial view as seen from the southern hemisphere! Luckily I had one of the northern view also and easily switched them over😂

Your comment made me smile 😄 I have been pondering on how much editing is too much lately and I think for a photographer / creative it is just fun to do! Other people being offended is their choice....not usually the photographers intention!!

If you want to avoid blue images, (daylight /LED balance), orange (tungsten balance) or green (fluorescent balance) get into the habit of carrying a small 100x80mm piece of mounting board in your kit bag and place it near the main subject when setting up the lighting. Zoom in and focus on it then set the camera's white balance. Don't forget to remove the card before shooting! And don't forget to reset auto white balance after you've finished.

Have you done a D3 comparison against the d800e? Try it with RAW enhance in PS, seriously if you resize to 24MP… DR is the only valuable difference..
