Thank you for the remember when video. Thing is, during the Vietnam war, the Golden Gate bridge was closed at least once when the fleet returned to port. Why? There were fears anti-war protestors would attempt dropping bombs on the ships below the bridge. Anyone notice Halsey pulling out a cigarette to smoke? Bet no high ranking officer today smokes because it would look bad in this pc world. As to the Navy "marching" down the street, they looked more like they were not quite running to get to the nearest bar!

Yup, go ashore in your civvies so you don't get attacked. Remember it well, being denied service for being in the military...

No human, aware that cigarettes cause cancer, should smoke - in case you might be interested...noting to do with PCness, unless you choose to ignore proven medical facts.

Halsey's fleets ran into two typhoons. His superiors wanted to relieve him but didn't citing damage to the Navy image. I think history will record that it was a good thing that Spruance replaced Halsey - who was I'll - for the battle of Midway.

Halsey called out his own replacement for Midway. Halsey was an ordinary Naval Officer, not the best in his class. However, he was the best man for the job as he was willing to take the risks that others were not willing to do because duty to his country was more important than his career. He was a true patriot and stood out from those like Adm Stark and all the Washington cronies.

Herd of squids diddyboppin' crack me up - the street wasn't rolling enuff for 'em after months at sea. Halsey's face shows concern for his record at Leyte & the two typhoons; he wasn't a genius, he couldn't cure the ills of a messed-up command structure, & weather forecasting & comm were embryonic: He was a tough SOB, fixing a Japanese problem the moment he arrived in Sopac to wrap the Solomons & onward, whenever he was on shift; he was America's great fighting admiral, good for copy at home as well as battle, & our only real peer vs Cunningham & the British panoply (Spruance was too closeted while Nimitz was a fixer; King was the Real SOB, but didn't make good company w/ our allies, while Fletcher sorta got the shaft) 💔.
